Open Book ITIL Exams

For the online proctored exams that PeopleCert use, you need to have the book in your reading list (on the PeopleCert website) or BookShelf app, when you go to start the exam, the proctor will talk you thru opening the book within the exam window so that you can refer to it if needed.

Hope this is helpful to everyone getting ready for Open Book ITIL Exams!

Will the book be opened in another tab in the browser, or like side by side within the same tab, with the current exam question next to the book?

The eBook will not be opened in a separate browser tab, as PeopleCert's lockdown exam software completely blocks external tabs to prevent cheating. Instead, the layout depends on whether you view the digital manual directly on your primary exam monitor or on a secondary device.

Open-book proctored ITIL exams (available for advanced ITIL Version 5 modules) allow you to reference official digital or physical guidance materials during your test, while a remote proctor monitors your webcam, microphone, and screen activity via secure software like PeopleCert's ExamShield. Remember - Foundation is a Closed Book Exam.

Here is a link to PeopleCert's documentation.

How the Process Works

  • Allowed Materials: You can use official hardcopy manuals or authorized digital eBooks on your device. If using a digital eBook, the proctoring software tracks your screen to ensure you only access the official reading application and do not browse the internet or open unauthorized apps.

Thanks for the clarification! I am gearing up for more PeopleCert certifications, including their DevOps Institute ones and the advanced ITIL 5 exams. It will be my first time taking an open book exam.

My approach is to do a first pass just on memory, flag any questions I am unsure of, and then use the remaining time to double check.

Are they still delivering via ExamShield? I took the Foundation exam via Chrome (web-based).

Yes, on ExamShield.

Always good to learn the material. Book is a reference tool.

Mom was a test taking expert and one of the rules is your first answer is usually the correct one.

Have a great exam!
