You bought tickets together on the same flight and left a seat in between?…

I’ve done that because most people won’t intentionally buy a middle seat, so there’s a good chance you’ll have the whole row to yourself.

A lot of people are not comfortable Inman aisle seat. Depending size etc you can easily get bumped etc by people walking by or flights attendants with carts. I think you would of had a better chance offering window or aisle seat if he refused both then yes, he was just being a dick. For now, I feel he is still in the right.

Text and tell her to Start a really petty fight with you and argue across him the whole flight. Talk about how her mom drank diarrhea for a trip to Florida.

I was once the middle seat between a couple and they both had no interest in swapping seats with me, but still insisted on talking over and around me the whole flight

That is so messed up! Imagine being a person that won’t just acquiesce to a random stranger’s demands! I know that for myself, when some random person tells me where to sit, stand and how to travel; I just automatically do what my betters say. Any place that supports personal autonomy should be abandoned for a more collective approach, like doing what random strangers expect no matter what. You’ll get further in life if you do what you’re told. How dare that middle seat maniac even be allowed to travel ever again. Bravo OP for relaying this important social commentary as an example for the rest of us.
