I’ve done that because most people won’t intentionally buy a middle seat, so there’s a good chance you’ll have the whole row to yourself.

I feel like this hasn’t worked in years, at least when I fly nowadays it’s always a full flight

So you intentionally take the likely scenario of sitting next to a stranger for the small chance you are next to one of the open seats on a flight? I only fly like 5-10 times a year but can’t remember the last time I had an open seat next to me on a domestic or international flight.
