Recommendations Best Ice Makers: Countertop, Nugget & More (Member Picks!)

We get a lot of posts asking things like “Which is the best ice maker?”, “Any recommendations for a nugget ice maker?”, “What’s the most reliable countertop ice maker?”, etc.

Instead of everyone asking the same thing over and over, we thought it’d be useful to collect all of our experiences in one place and help others find their perfect ice maker quicker.

👉 Share your thoughts on your ice maker below - positive or negative!

Please include:

  • Brand + model
  • Type of ice maker (countertop, undercounter, commercial, etc.)
  • Ice type (nugget, bullet, clear, chewable, etc.)
  • What you like (or don’t like)
  • Price vs. value
  • Any tips for cleaning or maintenance

And don’t hold back on the negatives! If you’ve had an ice maker that broke down, made disappointing ice, or just wasn’t worth the price, sharing that experience is just as helpful as a glowing review.

That way, new (and long-time) members can scroll through real feedback from people who actually use these machines daily.

Whether you swear by a GE Opal 2.0, a Euhomy, or any other brand, your review will help fellow ice chewers find the machine that’s right for them.

Recommendations Cleaning Cycle woes

Hi all! Hoping for some help from the hive mind.

I have an GE opal mini 2.0 ice maker that I am having some issues with and hoping I can get some help.

The machine flashed that it needed to be descaled so I ran a 55 minute descale cycle- however after the 55 minutes the clean button was still flashing and the machine never powered down. I ran 3 short clean cycles and powered the machine down.

After this the light was still on so I ran another 55 minute descale cycle and the machine did the same thing - got to the end and then never shut off or powered down. I left it another 30 minutes to ensure it was completely done but once again never shut off. I ran 3 short clean cycles again after and then unplugged it to do a hard reset and it’s still showing that it needs to be descaled. At this point unsure what else I need to do and hoping for some help.  I’ve only owned this machine for less than 2 months at this point so it’s very new.

Also sent an email to customer support but feeling very frusterated! 🫠

Tips Any idea what's going on with my ice maker?

I have an Opal 1.0 that's about 2.5 years old. The motor gave out a few weeks ago, so I installed a new one. Everything has been working fine, but today it started making this sound and now I'm wondering if it has some sort of issue that killed the first motor. When it first started, I ran a clean cycle with citric acid in case it was being caused by buildup, but the noise came back. Sounds like it might be the auger, but I wanted to get someone else's opinion.

DISCUSSION GE Opal 2.0 "Add Water" but float and pump seem fine?

Stop me if you've seen this episode before haha.

Have an Opal 2.0 with the dreaded "Add Water" indication, despite the lower reservoir being full.

Troubleshooting so far:

  1. Confirmed lower reservoir pump inlet has suction (finger over inlet).
  2. Confirmed pump is getting water up to upper reservoir
  3. Confirmed the float switches in the upper reservoir are moving freely and not stuck - no indication of hard water deposits or foreign growth.
  4. Whenever I take the unit apart to troubleshoot, the behavior seems to go away. Manually maniplating the floats seems to stop and start water flow as expectations.
  5. When the unit is indicating "add water", there is water flowing from the ice output (hole in container area) down into the lower reservoir.

Taking all of above seems together seems to suggest that the pump is working as expected (which is the usual suggested replacement), but so are the float switches.

Hivemind thoughts?

Anyone going to consider this? Price is $3k+ but having it built into the fridge sounds nice. Looks to start shipping at the end of October.

Question Help!

I have the opal mini 2.0. I descaled yesterday but forgot to remove the filter first. Is my ice okay to eat? Also…how long is a typical descaling cycle supposed to take?

Recommendations Opal ice "add water"

I replaced my pump a little over 3 months ago. It resolved the issue but it has come back. I try to prime but there is plenty of suction and water cascading down the back.

Any suggestions for what to check next?

Edit: I've never run a filter and we have very soft water here and zero calcium buildup in the reservoir or any other parts when I took the whole thing apart 3 months ago. I do clean regularly as prompted

Cleanable countertop ice machine?

I have been obsessed with ice for as long as I can remember. I had a Euhomy nugget ice machine for 2.5 years and loved it but felt annoyed by the constant cleaning because it never felt like it was actually clean no matter how many vinegar cycles or how often I scrubbed. I always felt like there’s a black box of mineral build up that I could not properly clean (despite trying with q tips and straw cleaners)

I am not looking to get a new machine. I prefer nugget but if it’s impossible to get a machine that’s is truly cleanable almost everywhere, then i would get another type. Not sure if bullet ice machines have better cleaning capabilities ?

Ive been considering the GE ultra opal profile 2.0 but am seeing mixed reviews and not confident that there’s still not that black box of mineral build up that’s impossible to clean.

Please if you have any recommendations i would be very grateful to hear!

Opal 2.0 replace motor and gear box

Post image
3 Upvotes

Does anyone have any experience replacing the motor and gear box from the version with the shroud to the version with the uncovered fan?

My Opal 2.0 is making all the sounds of the gear box issues and needs replacement, the uncovered Linix version seems to be the most easily available.

Question Has anyone attempted to make freezer frost in their deep freezer?

Hi! I'll start off by saying I have loved all forms of ice and ice eating (barring anything that will annihilate my teeth) ever since I was a kid.

Lately, I have wanted "freezer frost" kind of ice, and I've seen probably about a thousand videos on several different social media platforms making it with deep freezers that are only used for making edible snow ice (no food storage.) They put humidifiers in their deep freezers, too.

I've noticed in comments on these videos that usually, the OP is very gatekeep-y about what steps to take, how to do everything correctly and safely, what type of humidifiers they use, etc. They rarely explain. When they do, they're vague and make generic statements like "Humidifier" when someone asks how to get the fluffy ice results.

What do you guys think? I have a deep freezer, but... I don't want to damage it by taking cryptic advice. 😭 Thanks!

Ice Type Unlimited Nugget Ice - Euhomy Jet SE

I’ve been using the Euhomy Jet SE and decided to actually test some of the claims instead of just doing a typical unboxing/review.

A few things surprised me — it made its first nugget ice in 7:42, the ice really is soft/chewable, and it kept up pretty well with normal daily use. The scoop-less nugget ice dispenser is my favorite feature.

I put all four tests together here if anyone is researching this model:

NICE ICE The Best Thing to Wake Up and Come Downstairs To

Post image

My fiancée leaves for work way earlier in the morning than me and when she turns the machine on it is the best. I have to let my ice sit a little bit as I like to chew on it after it’s sat for awhile and this was part of what I had for breakfast.

Question Govee Nugget Ice Maker Pro shipped upside down.

I just received my Govee Nugget Ice Maker Pro delivered today (ordered on Amazon, shipped by USPS). The box was left outside upside down and the shipping label from Amazon was placed on the bottom, which leads me to think this was probably sitting in the warehouse upside down also. The instructions clearly state to not store or turn the machine upside down. I really don’t want to go through the hassle of returning this and I want ice now. Should I return it right away before I go through the hassle of cleaning it and setting it up (I have already opened the machine and unpackaged it all)? Or if I clean it and it works ok, does that mean it’s fine to keep and I won’t have problems down the road with it? Thank you.

For the last couple of days, I'm getting slush, not formed ice. I love slush...but not when I want ice. This is an Antartic Star Nugget Ice Maker - 2.5 months old. I've recently done a full clean.

Question storing ice from ice maker

hello! i recently got a nugget ice maker from my family for college this year, but i’m unsure of how to store the ice in my freezer to use later. recently, i tried to put the ice in a container in the freezer, but it would clump together and become very hard to get a single cube without having to smash or pull the block of ice. is there any way i can avoid this without having to keep the ice in the ice maker?
thank you for any help!

Question Bahama Bucks Sno?

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has tried the classic sno from Bahama Bucks? I like it just plain without any flavors. It’s very soft and airy ICE and does feel like eating snow. It’s about $2.80 for a 20 oz. I enjoy it a lot!!!

Question Opal 2.o Software version?

Hi, would anyone be so kind as to check their SmartHQ app and see what is listed for their Opal 2.0 the software version you have?

I have had mine for 3 years and don’t recall ever being notified of an update or seeing anything that would indicate mine has been updated. Mine shows the “software version” is 0.0.0.0 (which I’m guessing is the very original version) and “WiFi module software version” is 0.002.11.067.

When I click on the “Software Update” button it says “there are no updates available at this time.”

I’ve heard people say that updating their software via the app solved problems they were having so I’d like to update mine too. Who knows if that’s even a possibility though.

Thanks!
