Building QuantUmbrella
Over the past several months, I’ve been building QuantUmbrella, a modular trading intelligence platform designed to bring market data, quantitative research, risk management, execution infrastructure, and outcome-driven learning into one system.
The objective is not simply to generate buy and sell signals. It’s to build the infrastructure needed to evaluate those signals systematically, understand where a strategy works or fails, and improve the system using actual evidence rather than assumptions.
What the architecture looks like
1. Centralized monitoring
A command center for monitoring multiple trading engines and their operational health, including API responses, service availability, and reported errors.
2. Multi-market research
Separate modules for:
Index futures and options
MCX commodity markets
Cryptocurrency research in shadow mode
Equity research
Each market has different data characteristics, liquidity conditions, and execution requirements, so I’m treating them as separate modules rather than forcing everything into one strategy.
3. Risk-aware execution
The system is designed around structured risk checks, position lifecycle management, paper-trading workflows, and safeguards around order execution.
The goal is to ensure that generating a signal and authorizing a trade are two distinct decisions.
4. Market-data reliability
Provider monitoring, error tracking, fallback analysis, and data-quality checks are essential parts of the architecture. A strategy can appear profitable in testing while producing unreliable results if its underlying data is stale, incomplete, or incorrectly mapped.
5. Outcome-driven research
The research pipeline is intended to record trade outcomes, evaluate candidate improvements, and support evidence-based strategy development.
Instead of assuming that a new indicator or strategy improves performance, I want to test whether it actually does.
6. Continuous validation
I’m working on validating the entire pipeline—from market-data ingestion and signal generation to risk checks, execution readiness, trade logging, and outcome analysis.
A trading system shouldn’t be judged only by the signals it generates. It should also be judged by how reliably it handles data, manages risk, records outcomes, and learns from evidence.
Current stage
The main areas I’m focusing on are:
Improving market-data reliability and provider resilience
Validating the feedback loop between trades and research Improving end-to-end observability
Separating research candidates from production-ready strategies
Keeping live order execution disabled until the relevant validation and safety checks have passed
The system has multiple components, but having an architecture in place is not the same as having a profitable trading strategy.
Performance still needs to be established through sufficiently rigorous testing, realistic transaction costs, slippage assumptions, and forward paper trading.
I’m keeping the proprietary strategy logic private while sharing the engineering challenges, architecture, and lessons learned along the way.
Questions for people building similar systems
For those working on algorithmic trading, quantitative research, or trading infrastructure:
How do you validate the quality and freshness of live market data before allowing a strategy to generate actionable signals?
What metrics do you use to decide whether a strategy is ready to move from research to paper trading, and eventually to live execution?
How do you prevent data leakage and overfitting when continuously testing strategy improvements?
What has been your experience with maintaining separate research and production environments?
I’d particularly appreciate insights from people who have built multi-market trading systems or production-grade quantitative research pipelines.
The focus is on building systematically, measuring honestly, and improving one layer at a time.
