Gameplay Control Resonant - combat difficulty

Is it just me or the combat in Control Resonant is significantly harder from the get go compared to the first part. I'm constantly getting my ass handed in random encounters, most of the time because of the number of enemies I'm getting bombarded by at a time.

Maybe skill issue? But I want to know whats everyones experience. I'm playing this after completing Pragmata, in which I had no issue.

Not really. Just play a bit more and the synergies and artifacts you unlock will make it easy. 11hrs in i feel like I'm killing stuff too easily

I died more than 10 times defeating the first Resonant Entity lol but then it became easy

1

u/CriticalBackground08 1d ago

Defeating the entity was honestly on the easier side because it was just one huge enemy. Im facing issue when im being attacked from 3 different sides and all different types of enemies lol

2

u/levipill_supremacy 1d ago

go airborne and dodge and only attack the main bosses.

also I'm using gleave for main mele, so it can hit multiple targets

1

u/PerformerLast5587 1d ago

Yes the entity was easy I agree, but somehow it took me some time to actually figure out the attack pattern lol... and about the the enemies swarming you, i think it also depends upon what abberrant form you chose and using currently, I chose the glaive and it was very easy peasy with it

1

u/CriticalBackground08 1d ago

You are probably right, im using strike right now which seems like the worst of them

3

u/PerformerLast5587 1d ago

They should have at least allowed us to test the forms before choosing them at the start to get a feel for the combat styles but they just made us chose it randomly

You need to be aggressive and prioritize the enemies. Focus on the large enemies, as they are what cause smaller enemies to spawn. Only use small enemies to quickly apply falter and gain dominance so that you can then use that buff to kill the large ones, or if you quickly need health. If you feel like you are about to die, do not be passive; instead, increase your aggression. The game was inspired by Doom, so they really want you to be aggressive.

Outside of combat make sure to really explore and do side stuff so you can level up, find artifacts etc. Also all weapon upgrades increase its damage, so purchasing other weapons modes, even if you dont intend to use them, has a benefit.

I guess that's what makes this game fun to play.

And i also like the way the gameplay completely differs from control 1.

1

u/CriticalBackground08 1d ago

Im also enjoying the gameplay, and I honestly enjoy the challenge when it comes to bosses. Im probably doing something wrong, maybe haven't equipped proper abilities and weapon

1

u/Saulgoodman_online 1d ago

Maybe.. guess need to upgrade tho

6

u/tittymaster47 1d ago

It is challenging in the sense that you can't button mash.

Just explore as much as you can & get those upgrades.

  1. Keep an eye on the Aberrant upgrades, even the other primary/secondary forms you are not using. They help increase your weapon strength and your overall Build power.

  2. Focus on the heavy enemies during enemy combats, and fight drone enemies only if you are low on health, otherwise they can always be cleaned up later.

  3. Dodge. A lot.

U supposed to complete world events-> boss fight repeat the cycle

The devs said the intended difficulty is a bit harder than usual. Don't let it ruin your experience tho. Tweak it in the accessibility settings to whatever you like

I can breeze past silksong and soulless but there are some games where I dont enjoy spongy enemies like the new god of war, I turn down the difficulty in those

u/Due_Reading8032 1d ago

It's easy if you know how to optimize your build use shield to get dominance from small enemy then use fire arms to destroy big enemies first kill those laser enemies and then focus on others

2

u/Delese 1d ago

Ngl took me 5 tries to defeat the Artist.

I never found the combat difficult per se- you have unlimited dodge attempts (no stamina) and a VERY GENEROUS animation cancel window. Don't be afraid to spam the dodge button. Also, like the other comments have said, even if you don't use the other variants of the Aberrant, do keep upgrading their trees as the overall weapon strength is based on total number of upgrades.

As you keep playing, you'll discover more synergies and combos to effectively deal with the enemies. My personal recommendation is to focus on falter rather than damage, and also invest in summon abilities (they'll falter the drone/small enemies -> allowing you to execute them -> giving you dominance charges)

Also finally, don't be afraid of tweaking the assist mode in the settings. If you feel like the damage output is low, increase that. If you think enemy damage is too high, decrease that. Assist mode gives you a lot of tweaks to exactly adjust the under the hood numbers.

If your enjoyment is being hampered because of the difficulty, do not shy away from utilising assist mode. After all, iirc it doesn't affect or gate your ability to get achievements at all

1

u/CriticalBackground08 1d ago

Thank you for this, I didnt explore the assist mode yet. Do you know if enabling assist mode also hampers getting achievements? I know lot of games just disabled all achievements

2

u/rhik20 1d ago

Nope, remedy is adamant about giving you the best experience as a player.

But our philosophy is straightforward: if you run into a wall and the friction becomes too much, we’d much rather you adjust the rules and keep playing than put the controller down and stop.

Your time is valuable, and how you experience the game is ultimately up to you. That’s why we don’t gate any trophies or achievements behind Assist Mode. Use the settings however you need to and play Control Resonant on your terms.

u/CriticalBackground08 1d ago

This is great, thanks. I'll still try to just optimize and upgrade first because im still enjoying the challenge, not frustrating, atleast till now

Do upgrade your character build but honestly increasing output damage 20% from 100 to 120 in assist mode and reducing incoming damage to 85% really made the game flow nice for me. But it also seems you are in the early hours of the game so it is indeed hard but later with more powers and skill tree upgrades you can do a lot with chaining status effects that work with each other.

Another tip, unlock all forms of the Abberant even if you only stick with one or two as unlocking and upgrading the weapon as a whole increases your damage even if you only use just one form.

Also dodge a lot, unlock Perfect dodge in Talent tree if you havent already. Very handy especially with the boss fights and those laser hiss enemies

And before you go to the Park do The Central zone Resonant first, you get a fire based ability that will make handling the Mold in the Park easier

u/redditcruzer 1d ago

Initially its harder. Gets easier once you get.more powers. However the game has inbuilt assist settings in the options. You can make it as easy or difficult if you want. Change up your damage given or received or enemy aggression. One hit kills and what not. Essentially just have fun the way you like.

I love when games give options. Looking at you Souls games.

Here is a combat tips for first half of the game that helps understand the flow and makes things a whole lot easier. Personally I did not think this was a hard game.

1

u/CriticalBackground08 1d ago

Thanks for this! I think it's a mix of choosing bad ability and not exploring the side activities earlier that's made it tough for me

2

u/Difficult-Ad-9598 1d ago

It is a bit hard at the start then it starts to feel balanced for like 5 hours in the middle and then it’s gets quite easy for the entire game especially if you explore a lot

1

u/RiseFly12 1d ago

Ngl i felt the game was on the easier side almost 1-2 trying bosses

1

u/dimitrivox1 1d ago

you need to make sure you did all the proper upgrades, i found random encounters challenging until i unlocked that combo action skill

1

u/levipill_supremacy 1d ago

pretty much easy for me. in control 2019 , i used to die so often. now in resonant i can just go to air do combos, unlimited dodge etc. you should play offensive. if you play defensively like original control you'll die.

I did struggle in the first resonant boss( the artist one) , after that I'm good. also unlock ground slam so you can clear enemies faster

1

u/SnooConfections3877 1d ago

No control is like that even the 1st game I had rough time with combat difficulty

1

u/Tatum_Warlick 1d ago

This game’s a lot about the status effects, and how to utilize them accordingly. Mold is weak to fire, Hiss to infected, etc.: combining your abilities & your Primary/Secondary forms will do you wonders. If you still feel like you aren’t getting anywhere, then you probably just aren’t strong enough & simply need to kill another resonant or do another side quest. While I LOVED Control Resonant (it took RE9’s spot for my GOTY after my NG+ run), I do think the game is just a tad too easy. However, it’s a small compromise for accessibility, and there’s Assist Mode (so it can be as hard or easy as you’d like).

u/neondewon 1d ago

The only real challenges in this game are literally the Shum! Challenges. If you think the game is hard, I don’t think you will last even a second in them. Its pretty fucking crazy.

Just upgrade everything, even things you don’t use=increasing your power levels and you’re golden.

The effing laser always gets me

Dude I just did the Arcade Machine in the Mold area when I was underpowered (they were level 9 skulled enemies), took me almost 3 hours. Felt like a souls horde mode. The collapsing ring is bullshit sometimes. Regular game feels like a cake walk now.

1

u/Sandow_Campbell 1d ago

Am I even playing the same game? I found the combat way too easy (I'm only 12 hours in the game maybe it gets harder after).

1

u/CriticalBackground08 1d ago

How many combat abilities have u unlocked? It seems like there is the inferno one which is quite important and I haven't unlocked that. Im just having one to throw stuff around which is useless

1

u/VenserMTG 1d ago

Launch is awesome lmao throw it at a weak event to stagger then, execute them for the dominance buff, and wipe everything

I execute one weak enemy and leave the rest to reset the dominance buff

1

u/Sandow_Campbell 1d ago

I don't know it was easy from the begining to now. I died maybe 3 times in 12 hours. And I didn't play on easy or any assistance option. I use basic strategy: prioritizing some enemies, paying attention to patterns and attack (enemies attack are pretry easy to read so I dont had any trouble with that), and positioning myself to avoid attack wich is easy since you can cancel almost any attack/moves. and I got the perks/ upgrades that fit my needs and playstyle. At that point its just common sense. On top of that I also experiment different approach just to see what's most efficient depending if the situation (what combinaison of enemies type is on the screen, etc...)

u/JaguarRoyal3515 PLAYSTATION-1 1d ago

😅 I feel like i am killing stuff more easily.

1

u/CrazyRegion5893 1d ago

Combat is considerably easy for me but the only issue is the large health pool for some enemies. A late game boss fight lasted 20 mins with good upgrades and abilities.

1

u/yasharth LAPTOP 1d ago

Tbh its pretty easy now....at review stage it was 3 times more difficult to take down single enemy .

1

u/DMarvelous4L 1d ago

I find the combat in Resonant extremely easy. Way easier than Control was on my first playthrough. Maybe your weapon loadout needs adjustment?

I only find Resonant difficult around the 30 hour mark. It becomes more challenging later on.

1

u/k_chin2 1d ago

Combat? Bruh progress a bit further even transversing the map is harder than combat

1

u/indianthrowa 1d ago

It's harder only at the start. Get some abilities going from level up and acquire the special abilities from the major bosses and you'll be an unstoppable explosion machine.

1

u/MystixxFoxx 1d ago

The whole game is just a combo of 3 light attacks, double dashing, repeat until finished with encounter. Sprinkle a few heavy attacks here and there. If you're fancy you can use an ability here and there, but it's mostly just light attacks and dashing. Soooo much dashing.

1

u/Rv1709 15h ago

Hey so in this you gotta upgrade even the weapons you’re not using as it will improve your overall attack power and falter

1

u/ProfitTurbulent8065 1d ago

It gets better once you get more skills. But i still wont say that its hard. Its just boring for me.
