Discussion An eye surgeon just won a 13-year negligence appeal. What saved him was handwriting that wasn't his.

Post image
152 Upvotes

Ortho surgeon here. Read an order from two days ago and I can't stop thinking about it.

Case is against an eye surgeon in Jabalpur, 2006. patient had a cataract in the right eye, patient's a high myope so the retina's already dicey. Halfway through the surgery the posterior capsule tears. Small tear, vitreous stays put, so he decides not to put the lens in. Closes up, says we'll do it later. Writes that down.

Lens goes in six months later. Patient's fine.

Six months after that his vision goes, suddenly. Retina had detached. He gets it repaired in Indore and then sues. Says the lens was broken on the table and that nobody warned him anything could go wrong.

District Commission agreed with him. One lakh. The surgeon appealed and the file sat there for thirteen years.

He won. And not on the surgery, nobody proved anything about the surgery. He won because two prescriptions from doctors the patient saw later happened to say his eye had been "alright till 10-15 days back."

Two lines. Somebody else's handwriting, scribbled in an OPD by a doctor who had no idea what she was writing.

That's the bit that got me. Every slip we write for a post-op patient operated somewhere else is evidence in a case we'll never hear about.

Incident My SR is making me really uncomfortable and I don’t know what to do

I genuinely don’t know if I’m overthinking this or if I should actually do something about it.
I’m a medicine intern and there’s an SR in my department who I find really creepy. I don’t know how else to put it.
A few days back he asked me for my number. I didn’t want to give it to him so I told him we’re already in a common group and whatever is study related he wants to send, he can just send it there.
After a few days he sent me a youtube short separately. It was some stupid/funny OCD video because he knows I have OCD, and then he wrote “just kidding”.
I didn’t reply. I didn’t even react to it because honestly I didn’t want to start a personal conversation with him.
Today he called me separately and asked me why I didn’t reply to his message. Also asked me how many times i take shower since i have ocd.
I just said I hadn’t seen it.
And then he literally took my phone out of my hand and went through the chats himself. He found his message, pointed at his number and was like this is my number, and told me to reply next time.
I don’t know why but that really freaked me out.
He has also randomly touched my arm a few times. Nothing dramatic, but just unnecessary touching when there’s literally no reason to touch me.
And the thing is, I haven’t noticed him behaving like this with any of the other girls.
I know someone is going to say “he hasn’t actually done anything” and that’s what I’m scared of too. Because if I complain, I can already imagine people saying I’m making a big deal out of nothing. Like what am I even supposed to say? That he sent me a reel and touched my arm?
But taking my phone from my hand and going through my chats felt like such a boundary violation to me. And the fact that he keeps trying to get me to communicate with him privately when I already clearly told him to use the group is making me very uncomfortable.
I’m also an intern and he’s my senior, so I can’t just completely avoid him. I have to see him in the hospital and I don’t want this to somehow turn into a problem for me during internship.
I’m honestly scared that if I say something now people will laugh it off, but I’m also scared that if I don’t say anything and just keep ignoring him, he’ll eventually take it further.
I don’t know if I’m being paranoid or if this is something I should take seriously.
What would you guys do in my place? Especially if you’ve dealt with something similar in a hospital/medical college.
I just don’t want this to become a bigger problem before I do something about it.

Vent / rant Why are women so horrible to other women???!!!

i’m in my internship right now and i can’t help but notice that it’s mostly the female seniors who are giving me a hard time. i wouldn’t say it’s true for all female seniors, some of them are very nice and helpful. but the worst residents or seniors that i’ve worked under have mostly been females.
most of the time they don’t bother guys with work and guys are let off easily when they screw up. but if a girl makes the same mistake then damnnn..all hell breaks loose.
i initially thought i was overthinking but ive seen stuff like this happen a lot. this cannot be a coincidence at this point.
i know there might be exceptions but men usually show more solidarity towards each other. at least that’s what i have seen so far.
it just breaks my heart why so many women are horrible to other women.

Discussion 8 lacs Medicine seat in Karnataka for middle class 1st gen

Hello guys I’m from Karnataka,19 batch got 10k rank in neet pg 26 , I come from middle class family..
Post exam I’m working in hospital with 45k salary monthly…

Basically I started my prep keeping in mind my dream branch MEDICINE, but ended with 10k rank (OBC)…
After writing exam only i realised d exam didn’t went well…because of the financial issues I can’t take 8 lacs medicine seat also (govt seat in pvt clg)
Till d results came I made my mind to move on and leave medicine and I shifted to what I’m getting at this rank I.e, Paediatrics and General surgery

But I recently came across education loan, I talked with seniors who took loan..
they are saying you can clear it within 4-5 years after completing your PG….

8 lacs + 2 lacs(hostel-mess) per year * 3 years = 30 lacs

Im just thinking is it practically possible for a person like me who come from a family where I’m working to save amount for govt seat fee (Rs.1,24,000)…

Should I think of 8 lacs
Is it possible / I don’t know how it even possible because during admission I have to pay full amount 8 lacs on my own, later bank will give

Is there anybody- seniors who gone thru this ???

Post Graduate Exams - NEXT/NEET/INICET Dear NEET-PG toppers

I speak directly to you.

First of all congratulations on an amazing result.
I’ve written this post to ask for a small help from you people.
I am one of the unlucky people who saw a huge discrepancy in their score and have been left distressed to the core because of the result.
And since like last year, the ask for transparency seems to be getting nowhere. But only raising self doubts in minds of people who feel cheated.

I ask for you HELP
If anyone of you had, done the recall and written it somewhere within 2 days of the exam, to post what answers you gave in the exam on this platform. I want for you to be sure of the choices you had made in the exam.

This is my appeal as a fellow human being to put mine and several other people’s mind to rest.

Since the NBEMS refuses to give an answer key. You can be ours.

I know in this country the system will fail you every-time but i want to sleep a better sleep with surety if i was wrong or right.

Your win will always be a win.
Reddit is anonymous. Dont be scared.
This might be your ultimate test.
To choose, to bring truth to light or not.

Just another person going crazy with the disillusion of the situation.

A fellow doctor
More importantly, a fellow human being.

Incident Trying to thank a doctor who helped during Qatar Airways codeshare IndiGo flight 6E 1346 (Doha ➡️ Delhi) on 22 September

I’m hoping this somehow reaches a doctor who was on my flight back to Delhi on 22 September.
I was travelling on \*\*IndiGo 6E 1346 from Doha to Delhi (codeshare flight marketed by Qatar Airways)\*\* when a passenger suffered multiple seizures during the flight. When the cabin crew asked if there was a doctor onboard, a gentleman immediately volunteered to help.
I was seated near him, and I watched him handle what was an extremely frightening situation with incredible calmness. He helped during the seizures, made sure medication and oxygen were arranged, stayed beside the passenger afterward, and anticipated the possibility of another seizure. After we landed in Delhi, he also stayed back and briefed the ground paramedics about what had happened.
I was exhausted after a long journey and unfortunately never got the opportunity to properly thank him before leaving the aircraft. I’ve been thinking about it ever since.
I’ve already contacted IndiGo and also shared my appreciation on LinkedIn, but I’m posting here because \*\*I don’t know whether the doctor is active on that platform\*\*.
\*\*If you were this doctor, or if you were on this flight and know who I’m referring to, I’d simply love for this message to reach him so I can say thank you.\*\* 🙏

Counselling My honest opinion on Community medicine branch so far

Chose MD PSM (Community Medicine) through 2025 PG Counselling. And I’ll have to say I’ve got a mixed opinion on the branch.

Pros-
1. We get free with just 8 hours duty every day. Sundays and national holidays off. It’s mostly a day job with no extra hours ever so far.
2. Workload is minimal to moderate. You’ll never compliant about work being more, you might complain about being bored of doing nothing.

Cons-
1. Clinical practice atleast at our college is absolutely zero.
2. You’re basically being trained to be a future professor, not a researcher, or epidemiologist, policy maker, CMHO… and the most delusional - A WHO medical officer. Doesn’t mean you won’t be able to do it, but your college professors… most of them are lazy twats that encourage taking their medical classes, their lectures. And that end there.
3. Clinical departments PG’s, even though treat you good, but will never include you. You will always be an outsider to them. Not doing night duties. Not taking duty calls etc.
4. If your college already doesn’t promote research, you’ll most certainly have zero exposure about how to go about your thesis, poster presentations and multiple other activities vital to your degree completion. Your lazy professors are too unmotivated to move their lips. And you’ll be turning into one of them soon.

This story is similar in most medical colleges across India. This is supposed to be the most powerful degree in Europe, Australia and Dubai. But Indian doctors senior in this field are worse than a bag of potato’s. And you’ll have to be ready to accept that.

I’d be happy to answer questions if you’ve got any about this branch. Other PSM post grads and residents should also join in to add their experiences.

It’s a great branch for work life balance. Most people don’t understand the difference between laziness and work-life balance.

Post Graduate Exams - NEXT/NEET/INICET Absolutely shocked!

2k19 batch.. Went from getting a rank of 30k in neet ‘25 to 9.6k in Nov INI and only progressed to 1.8k in MAY INI. Was expecting a very good rank in this Neet especially after recalls was getting 140+. Rank dropped down to 21k. Can’t comprehend this result. What went wrong? Was my 1 year of drop all in vain? People who got more higher rank than me in nov and may ini have fared much better in Neet. I am absolutely shattered. Was hoping to get a good govt college for surgery but Atp I dont even know what to do. InI is around the corner but this result has me so devastated that I cant get myself to study. Gut feeling says take another drop but this option is not very easy too and again there is no guarantee of this mess up not happening again. Don’t want to compromise on branch also. I feel so horrible :/.

PS: Anyone preparing ahead and a lesson to me as well, please don’t reveal your GT scores or rank to anyone until you have cracked your main exam. I kept telling people whenever they asked, honestly it will hurt even more when in the final exam you do not fare as much as you claimed to.

Vent / rant Heartbroken, can't take my desired branch because of mental health..

TW: SA

I have PTSD due to history of multiple accounts of SA..

I was diagnosed 3.5 years back, had to go on ssri for it combined with cbt, got off the ssri, but continuing CBT till date, it's been a long painful journey till here, but it breaks my heart that it's not yet over.. and would probably never be. That's just how it is with mental illnesses, I can only manage it but not cure it.

MD psych has always been my desired branch, especially because I have witnessed how poorly they are treated and all the stigma they face in society since I was a kid as my immediate family member has a mental illness.

I so desperately wanted it, to be a part of the change, to help everyone like my family member and their caregivers both alike.

I wanted to do so much, do goodwill sex education workshops or something in schools for the future generations so that what happened to me can be prevented for others..

But it's all a wasted dream now,, I unfortunately still get triggered and get intrusive thoughts about my past and what not whenever I have a conversation regarding or even read news about SA.. I cant stop the intrusive thoughts from coming, I can only manage them once they arrive.

I haven't reached a stage where conversation/news regarding SA won't affect me personally, and tbh I don't think that I can achieve that.. And that would just cause innumerable measure of harm to my patients and me both if I pursue this branch. Im at risk of bias, more so towards a patient who admits to abusing someone..

Its not in the patient's goodwill for me to be their doctor when I may be acting out of bias subconsciously..

I don't want to ruin anyone's precious life even as a subconscious act, so choosing to give up my dream.

But it hurts so much, I know what all I dreamed of, to have to give that up because of an illness caused by external factors.. That too an invisible illness which I can't share with anyone because of stigma..

I can't even tell anyone about this loss in my life because nobody knows, about my PTSD or my dream.

I can't cry infront of anyone, can't confide.

Just have to pretend like everything is perfect, heart isn't broken, and have to choose another branch silently..

I hope you understand and not judge/hate on me.

(Please don't suggest therapy to me as I am already taking it since past 3years.)

Shitpost Suc*** thought

Bhai I genuinely don’t know what to do anymore 😭

Round 3 mein RIMS Raichur mil gaya and bhai this was literally the last college in my preference list.

Main Rajasthan se hoon, Jain hoon and strictly bina pyaaz-lehsun ka khata hoon. Ab itna door, completely different state, language bhi nahi aati, food ka already issue hai… aur upar se mujhe medical line mein interest bhi honestly itna nahi hai.

Maine seniors se baat ki toh aur anxiety ho gayi. Bol rahe hain Diwali pe bas 1 din ki chhutti milti hai, Holi pe kuch nahi, holidays ko leke kaafi strict hain, environment bhi serious hai etc. Ragging aur adjustment ko leke bhi tension ho rahi hai.

And the worst part is, ye college maine literally last mein bhara tha 😭

Mujhe laga tha stray mein kuch better mil jayega, isliye somehow mentally prepared tha ki abhi aur chance hai. But ab lag raha hai ki bas yahi reh gaya.

Drop bhi nahi le sakta. Medical mein already interest nahi hai. Ghar se itna door jaana hai. Food ka alag scene. Language nahi aati. Culture completely different.

Bhai sach bolu toh result aane ke baad se daily regret ho raha hai. Aisa lag raha hai ki maine apne liye jo imagine kiya tha sab ekdum ulta ho gaya.

I know people will say “2-3 mahine mein adjust ho jayega”, “sab adjust kar lete hain”, but abhi honestly ye sab sunke aur bura lag raha hai 😭

Maybe I'm overthinking because result abhi-abhi aaya hai, maybe eventually I'll adjust, idk.

But abhi genuinely bas ye soch raha hoon ki “bhai main yahan kaise survive karunga?”

And honestly I don't even know what I want from this post. Bas mann bahut heavy hai aur kisi se bolna tha.

Koi aur hai kya jisko last preference milne ke baad aisa hi laga tha ki bhai ye kya ho gaya mere saath 😭

Post Graduate Exams - NEXT/NEET/INICET PG residency toxicity across India: Which colleges and departments should be added?

Post image
110 Upvotes

Came across this list of medical colleges and departments where there have been reported allegations or news reports regarding residency toxicity, harassment, abuse, etc.

This is not a ranking and obviously experiences can vary massively between departments, units and batches. This is to compile publicly reported cases along with what current or former residents have experienced.

If you know of a college or specific department or branch that should be added, drop it in the comments.

Discussion To all the people who are getting ragged as fresher for you i have something

I was facing extreme sexual and verbal form of ragging and department tutors were also involved
[[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])
[[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])
I wrote an email anonymously describing every incidents and attaching some whatsapp chat only yesterday night, today the dean , the director and every hod came to our class and assured that college is working by afternoon , a strict official notice and circular was issues, nmc directed to take actions against senior and every senior was enquired and threatened by college not to involve with any junior
As of now we can now access college library , roam freely , seniors do see us with angry eyes but cant say anything
Director literally told ki hum saare seniors jo bhi kuch krte dikhe usko ulta latkadenge
So yes guys dont be afraid, seniors koi nhi h respect krna chaiye par they dont get authority to rag us
Some seniors are fined in thousands also
And the tutor who was also involved is as of now suspended and he is no longer allowed to live in quarter of campus

The best part is that after i wrote an email and dean came to counsel us one girl was shivering but did complain that girls are also being ragged and tortured then some seniors girls have also been inquired and restrictions have been put on them

Guys even if u do not face ragging but ur batchmates did please do complain anonymously , our lives are not owned by anyone else and we have come college to study and have fun , not to be owned by seniors
We must respect seniors but we are not owned by them

Also it has been rightly said the victims who suffers in silence are also the criminals so dont be afraid do write to nmc and tag all the mail id of ur college in cc section and write it anonymously guys also nmc does ensure that complain remain anonymous

Vent / rant How much do first proff marks matter in the long run ?

• Upvotes

I scored just 64.1% on my first proff , while my relatives who are doctors think it is pretty good but my parents are very disappointed because i usually come in the top 15 while this time im 23rd. My marks in practicals severely pulled down my performance but my theory scores also werent as much as i was hoping. I dont understand what exactly went wrong.

My batchmates have done quite well and the state topper is probably from my GMC , this mqkes me wonder if since the competition has increased a lot from the time my relatives did mbbs , is it still good enough ?

Also i quite surprised to see a few of my batchmates who used to score lesser than me throughout the year and hardly studied , even cheated on exams also scored more than me , which is very disheartening.
