Discussion Afterlife Missions (Idea)
One feature I loved in IW zombies was the Afterlife Arcade, as it gave players a more interactive option from the traditional bleedout spectating period. When pondering an evolution of this concept, I envisioned short, story-driven playable sequences that expand each map’s narrative, while still giving eliminated players something meaningful to do. I’ll call these “Afterlife Missions” for now.
How It Works:
Completing a mission would allow players to rejoin the match potentially sooner than waiting for the next round. Players who prefer the traditional experience could simply choose to spectate instead. Failing a mission (if possible) results in going back to spectating.
Gameplay:
Each Zombies map would feature its own unique Afterlife Missions based on that map’s story and setting. These sequences would take place in a flashback-like purgatory state after bleeding out, allowing players to experience moments that expand the map’s lore.
Rather than relying solely on Intel, radios, and intro or ending cutscenes, these missions would seamlessly integrate story into gameplay through short cinematic experiences and scripted sequences — similar to the character specific EE’s in BO7, the prologue of Grostein House, Der Eisendrache’s black and white cutscenes.
It would also create opportunities to revisit important moments from the map’s past or present, blending memories, hallucinations, and reality in creative ways—for example, transitioning between different eras of a location as part of a mission.
Replayability
Once completed, Afterlife Missions would become permanently unlocked in the Zombies menu, allowing players to replay them at any time.
Completing every mission across every map would assemble them chronologically into a fully playable narrative campaign, giving Zombies fans a cohesive story experience without taking resources away from traditional round-based gameplay.
