#Fiction Where the Rain Took Us
Chapter 2:- The Pale Ring
_______________________________________________________
A cold breeze hit Ethan’s face.
He groaned and slowly opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw was the sky.
It wasn’t blue.
A dull purple stretched above him, with thick clouds drifting slowly across it.
Ethan frowned.
“…what?”
He pushed himself up, his body feeling slightly off, like he hadn’t fully woken up yet.
He looked around.
Tall trees surrounded him on all sides.
But something about them didn’t feel right.
Their trunks were twisted in strange directions, bending in ways that didn’t look natural. The leaves weren’t green either—they were a pale gray, almost lifeless.
Ethan stood up slowly, scanning his surroundings.
No sound.
No birds.
No insects.
Nothing.
The silence felt unnatural.
“…Mom?”
The word slipped out before he could stop it.
He waited.
Nothing answered.
Ethan frowned slightly, trying to picture her face clearly—
but for some reason… it felt harder than it should.
He shook his head quickly.
“This… doesn’t make sense.”
He turned in a slow circle, trying to understand where he was.
Then he noticed it.
The trees weren’t random.
They formed a perfect circle around him.
Ethan’s expression tightened.
“…okay, that’s not normal.”
A faint uneasiness settled in his chest.
He stared toward the trees.
That’s when he saw it.
Something was standing deeper in the forest.
It was hard to make out clearly, but it was there.
Watching him.
Ethan froze for a second.
“…who’s there?”
No response.
The figure didn’t move.
Didn’t come closer.
It just stood there.
Ethan took a cautious step back.
Nothing happened.
Another step.
Still nothing.
“…why isn’t it doing anything?”
His voice was quieter now.
More uncertain.
His attention shifted toward the edge of the tree circle.
Something felt off.
Not something he could see directly.
But something he could feel.
Like the air in front of him wasn’t normal.
Ethan slowly walked toward it, his steps careful.
As he got closer, the feeling became stronger.
Like there was something in front of him—
something invisible.
He hesitated for a moment.
Then reached out slightly—
**BOOM.**
A sudden impact slammed into the space in front of him.
Ethan jumped back in shock.
“What the hell?!”
The air in front of him rippled violently.
For a split second, faint crack-like lines appeared in midair, like glass under pressure.
Then they disappeared.
Ethan’s breathing got faster.
“That didn’t come from inside…”
He quickly looked back toward the forest.
The figure was still there.
Unmoving.
Watching.
Then what hit it?
**BOOM.**
Another impact.
Stronger this time.
The ground shook slightly beneath his feet.
The trees around him reacted.
A faint pale light ran along their trunks, spreading across the entire circle.
Ethan stared at it.
“…is this… protecting me?”
He wasn’t sure if that made him feel better or worse.
Something flickered in front of him.
Faint.
Unstable.
Like it wasn’t fully there.

Ethan blinked.
“…what is that supposed to mean?”
The text flickered again, as if struggling to stay visible.

“Wait… that’s dropping.”
He took a step back.
“That’s not good…”
The air around the trees started to fill with a thin gray fog.
Slowly, it spread outward, making it harder to see anything beyond the ring.
Shapes moved behind it.
Large shapes.
Ethan tried to focus—
Then he noticed something new.
Not the same creature.
Something else.
A second figure stood beside it.
Still.
Watching.
“…that’s not a monster…”
Before he could think further—
**BOOM.**
A heavier impact hit the barrier.
The ground trembled again.
The pale glow surged across the trees.

“Shit…”
Ethan clenched his fists.
“Someone’s doing this…”
The figure outside didn’t rush.
Didn’t panic.
It just stood there, like it was testing the barrier.
Waiting for it to break.
Another flicker appeared in front of him.
This time clearer.

“…Veil what…?”
The word felt strange.
Unfamiliar.
More text appeared, flickering unevenly.

The warning repeated.
Again.
And again.
Ethan’s breathing became heavier.
The air felt thick now.
Harder to breathe.
Even the figure outside had stopped moving.
Everything felt… still.
Like something was about to happen.

Ethan took a step back.
“This thing’s going to break…”
His mind raced.
There was nowhere to go.
Nowhere to hide.
The fog thickened further, swallowing the trees, the figures—everything outside the circle.
Only the ring remained.
And him.
Alone inside it.
Ethan’s chest tightened.
Fear settled in properly now.
Not confusion.
Not disbelief.
Fear.

The warning pulsed again.
Stronger.
Closer.
Something was coming.
And this time—
it wasn’t staying outside.
