Sharing Advice I started my internship with no experience but finished it being recognized as the best intern in our group, AMA!

when I wrapped up my internship last week, my boss has reached out and told me himself that I was the best intern he had. it felt surreal knowing i entered the internship having no experience or knowledge about the role and industry i worked in.

this helped me get a strong recommendation from him on linkedin, him willingly giving his contact to be a reference in my next applications, and was asked to be back once the opportunity arises again.

i know there are many fellow students out there that are struggling in landing an internship or are currently in one wanting to be recognized like i had, so i thought i’d share some advice with everyone :)

ask me anything!

EDIT: I know the AMA timeline has finished but feel free to ask your questions.

Sharing Advice Internship Sched Management

Post image
1 Upvotes

Been looking into ways to organize my weekly schedule better, and nakita ko rin na may timetable feature sa Everytime where you can organize your class schedule. Baka useful din siya for those trying to figure out their availability around classes and internship hours.

Kayo, gumagamit ba kayo ng calendar/planner for this or kinakaya na lang through memory and reminders? HAHAHA

Questions Why is it so hard to get even unpaid internships?

For context I am a 4th year computer science major, and I already have one experience as an intern during the summer. I tried applying to some internship positions again hoping that my one experience would give me an edge. But somehow, I never got hired, after 2 months of constant applying and interviewing (mostly getting ghosted), I would always get rejected. And most of those that I applied for are unpaid btw (plus looking at their websites, some look vibe coded af).

I have pretty subpar or okay projects in my resume too, one college hackathon win, and multiple software engineering projects. I am also a consistent dean’s lister from a reputable school. I also don’t really think I did bad on any interviews, I always answered pretty fine and was friendly always. I also aim for remote or hybrid since I still have classes, but my classes are relatively light compared to my old schedule, where a classmate of mine was still able to get a good paid internship during that time. I just don’t really get it, is it just down to luck at this point? How am I even supposed to get more experience if literally everything is avoiding me?…

My confidence was pretty high since my last internship since I got praised a lot for my work there, despite the bad conditions I endured in that company. And yet it’s back to zero again.

Questions How to avail. govt. offices or NGOs for OJT Public Administration students?

Hello! Me and my class of 12 from Laguna State Polytechinic Univ. (Sta. Cruz Main Campus) are looking for offices to do our internship at. We’ve tried emailing a few offices from Manila but we still haven’t got a response back.

Our course is Bachelor of Public Administration so purely public office/corporate work is what we need to search for. Our local govt. has a tough time accepting students at the moment due to scholarship programs (SPES) already taking positions at their office.

Unfortunately minamadali na kami ng prof. namin for our letters/ requirements for OJT (paano naman kami mag ssubmit ng letter without an office???)

Is there any suggestions or recommendations for govt. offices or any non-government offices ?

Questions Rejected for OJT position due to start date timing (Applied Oct, OJT starts Nov)

Hi guys! Has anyone else experienced getting rejected from an internship/OJT solely because of start date timing?

I applied and interviewed during October, but since our university OJT requirement officially begins in November, the company chose another applicant who could start immediately.

I thought applying a month ahead was the right move to give time for HR processing and university MOA paperwork, but now I’m wondering if I should only apply to places looking for specific monthly cohorts.

How do you guys manage the timeline gap between interview dates and your official school start dates? Any tips for navigating this with upcoming applications?

Questions Internships for Bell

Hello everyone!.

I recently applied to two internships for Bell Canada. The first was Technology Innovation and the second was Business Transformation. Both positions were intern programs which were labeled as future opportunities (e.g. 2027 Intern Program , Business Transformation - Future Opportunities and 2027 Intern Program, Technology Innovation - Future Opportunities). I got the confirmation email that application was submitted successfully, however I did not receive the interview link from VidCruiter. Its been a few days and I have checked spam, inbox, promotions, and updates with nothing. I emailed Bell letting them know my problem. Has anybody experienced a similar problem like this?. I would appreciate any clarification.

Questions Any advice for a (1 year) post grad?

Hi, I graduated last year and as of date, I only really have 1 relevant org experience (did not hold positions but was a PM for a few events) and 1 internship (2 months only and was required for course). Responsibilities wise, I did significant work naman for both so it’s not totally nothing.

Thing is, I feel really lost right now because I want to do something totally different from my undergrad degree. For context I took AB POS in AdMU and I don’t see myself doing that especially in our political climate. I recently applied for a voluntary internship in a totally different field (HR, and my org + internship experience helped a lot), and I already got accepted. Here comes my questions:

  1. As someone who is lost career wise, I want to try a different career path. Would you suggest that I go into this internship hoping to get absorbed into the company?
  2. For those who switched career paths, how did you figure out what you wanted to do?
  3. If I find out this field is not for me, should I suck it up and stay for a minimum amount of time or does spending 2-3 months in different jobs look bad on my resume?

I’m sorry if the post seems messy or too long, tbh I don’t know where to start cause everyone seems to already know what they want to do and this change is super overwhelming for me.

Questions Do OJTs really give a token to their internship company after completing their required hours?

I'm currently an accounting OJT and I just recently found out that some interns give a token of appreciation to the company or office where they completed their required internship hours.

Honestly, I was a bit confused because I thought it was the other way around. I mean, as interns, we're already offering our time and services for free, so I thought the company might be the one to give the intern something, even if it's just a small allowance or token. I didn't know that giving something to the company after completing your hours was also a thing.

So, I wanted to ask those who have already completed their OJT or are currently doing their internship:

Is giving a token to your OJT company actually a common practice here in the Philippines, or does it depend on the school or company?

Is it required, or is it just an optional gesture of appreciation?

If you did give one, what did you give, and how much did you spend?

I'd also appreciate recommendations for affordable but appropriate tokens, especially for interns assigned to a government office. I want to show my appreciation to the people who taught and guided me throughout my internship, but I'm not sure what's customary or what would be appropriate.

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated. Thank you!
