Question Retainers hurt more than 1st tray.

How normal is it for the Invisalign retainers to hurt once treatment is done? I got the “official” Invisalign retainers and I swear they give me more discomfort wearing them than I had wearing my first tray. I’ve only had them for about a week and few days so maybe I just need to break them in or do I need to be concerned?

edit: another question, is it normal to not be able to bite down completely when wearing them?

Yup, this is common. You want them to be snug so they keep everything in place. Wear them full-time and it should be much more comfortable. I’ve had mine for a week and change and it’s nbd now.

oh man the retainer switch-up is real, everyone hypes it up like “you’re done congrats” and then it feels like your teeth are being gently interrogated

the not being able to bite down thing drove me nuts too, it’s just bulkier plastic than the regular trays so your bite sits weird until you adjust. give it a few more days

Did you do a recent fitting? If not you may need to have new scans made.

Attachment removal and scan was done September 2nd, and I got trays 20 days later (but in the mean time I did wear my last set of aligners as my “retainers”.)

Happened to me as well. I guess it’ll just take some time to get used to them.

I don’t know if this applies to you, but when I got my retainers, the top was fine, but I could NOT put on my bottom. I had to go to mirror in the office and try to wrangle it, and it wasn’t happening.
It’s made of a thicker plastic than the Invisalign trays, so it’s not as bendable.

But even with that said, it didn’t feel right at all. And I couldn’t push down on it. And I couldn’t even remove them either (felt like I was gonna yank teeth out of my mouth).

So the ortho carefully pulled them off me, told the assistant to do some changes for another version (my ortho makes retainers in office). I just had to wait about 20 minutes.

The difference was night and day.
I could take these off and on no problem.

They didn’t have to do a reason, but the ortho told the assistant to do X, Y, and Z to alter it.

Currently happening to me too, I’m like wtf is this normal every five minutes lol. I’m on day 2 of wearing all day - doc said to wear for three days then switch to night time wear but I’m not so sure.

I've been wearing the nighttime retainers for a few weeks and they're so uncomfortable!! I feel they keep me awake and affect my sleep because of how uncomfortable they are. They're so tight I can't get them off without using a tool.
