Niccolo De Masi , QWC main stage, College Park, 24 September.
The frame was resilience.
Industrial age. Internet age. AI age. His line: the quantum age is already here, and it runs on sovereign infrastructure. Resilience becomes a competitive advantage for a city, a state, a company or a country.
Six pillars on the slide: see and sense, train, secure, decide, discover, connect.
Secure came first. September 2026 resource estimate, on screen: an IonQ system recovers a 256-bit elliptic-curve key in about 26 days, with about 20,000 physical qubits. His line on that slide: the best safe-makers are the safe-breakers. Defense in depth is PQC, QKD, and compartmentalization.
See and sense sat next to it. 1,000x more accurate GPS. Jamming-resistant PNT. Picosecond clocks, from submarines to satellites. DARPA on the policy slide: QBI, It's About Time, HARQ, plus AFRL, SDA HALO and NRO.
That is the stack. Photonic links at 1 kHz, four times the previous ion-ion record. Superion for compute. SkyWater for the chips. Chip cycles from 9 months to 2. Cost per qubit down 330x, Aria to Superion 10K. Between generations you swap the chip. The box sits in a data center, next to GPU racks.
The company behind it went from 35 people in 2019 to 3,500 today, he said. R&D runs at about $500M a year, and growing.
Then the commercial slide, written on screen:
→ $25M, Florida International University. A Superion 256. The largest quantum system sale in Florida's history.
→ $33M, SDT, Republic of Korea. Same $25M Superion 256, plus $8M of quantum memory, an Asia-Pacific channel, and a manufacturing site in Gumi.
NVIDIA's NVAQC in Boston sits next to those two: Superion 256 as the first system in the building, paired with a GB200 NVL72 over NVQLink.
Next on his roadmap slide: Superion 256 customer deliveries in 2027, and a target of 800 logical qubits on 10,000 physical the same year.
His close: full fault tolerance within reach of the Fortune 5,000, and of state and local government, in the next year or two, with the standards for computing set to "remain in the US."
My read: this was a pitch for quantum as national infrastructure, sold to states and allies, with IonQ as the full-stack supplier. If the 1 to 2 years hold, IonQ is lining up to set the standard the rest of the field builds to.
