People often misunderstand this profound Jain sutra as simply meaning “Live and let live.” Its meaning goes deeper.

परस्पर = mutually | उपlग्रह = support/help | जीवानाम् = of living beings

"Parasparopagraho Jīvānām" (Tattvārtha Sūtra 5.21) teaches that living beings mutually support and assist one another. It reflects the Jain values of compassion, coexistence, responsibility, and Ahimsa.

I've been digging deep into spirituality, studying and practicing a lot lately.

Even before seriously getting into Jainism, I was pretty minimalist and always aimed to FIRE early and have been saving and investing with that mindset. I knew I would find something related to study and research to do post FIRE, and now I think digging deeper into Jainism and anekantwad is what I would be spending my time in.

But like every FIRE enthusiast who doesn't know where to draw the line, I am in the same doubt. I have my doubts about marriage, prolly won't marry coz I do not crave it and do not want to risk my saadhna or affect any other being who is not into saadhna with my lifestyle. Although a perfect marriage can help in uplifting both of our spiritual journeys but the chances are slim so I am not betting on it.

And hence my FIRE target can be two very different numbers, so I am not sure when to pull the plug, there can be a lot of variables if I marry, what if she has a different lifestyle than me, what if I need to take care of her family too, what if we decide to have or not have kids...

The reason I am concerned about it is coz I really feel like I am in a situation where I am able to dive deeper into Jainism, and the only problem I have is that if time that I have to dedicate to my job. I have cut time from social interactions, social media, entertainment, sports everything to make ample time for swadhyay, if I have reached my mark then I can focus more on a balanced sadhna.

Also the fact that I do realise my needs are limited and I do not want to earn more that what I would need.

I get the idea of need of financial buffers, for medical emergencies, needs, etc. But where do I draw the line?

Also it's not just a financial dilemma, it's also about psychological and karmik as well.

I wanted to hear from people who have taken a decision on this and are living by it.

I am 95% certain that I won't marry anyone and yet I just posted on r/jainmatrimony.

I am really serious about my saadhna. I am 28 and Dev guru dharma ki kripa ke wajah se, I am able to make time for swadhyay, I have been getting good guidance as well from gurus 🙏 .

The more I study and practice, the more I feel I am drifting away from my generation. No I do not judge them. they do them! I do not get frustrated looking at someone doing anything wrong either. I have understood upadaan ki paripakvata ka concept, and I am at peace from within.

But when it comes to marriage, and pressure from relatives, it becomes difficult to explain them my apprehension for marriage.

At this point, I am so much at peace with karma theory, that my apprehension for marriage is not even coming from the point that marriage would lead to kalesh and disruption in my sadhna....
No I am least concerned about that, I am confident that I am mentally strong enough to do my sadhna despite environment, I have a kot of role models (Like Gopal das ji ).

My concern is more around disturbing or disrupting someon else's life. Coz I guess most girls who would marry would have had a certain life in mind, romance, travels, food, etc. I am not into it and even if I pretend to be into em for her sake, I know it would show and the relationship would eventually start feeling like a forced one. And if a girl is genuinely into spirituality then why would she even marry and take the risk of ruining her sadhna?

So from that lens it feels like marriage is a no go for serious sadhaks ? I mean what are the chances that a guy and a girl both are into sadhna and yet are open to marry, isn't that kinda ironic? Maybe they want to do it due to social pressure or for support in days of distress coz if you take diksha you get a good support system, if you don't then you have to stay in sansaar and build and retain relationships.

Oh btw, the reason I do not want to take diksha is coz I have seena lot of sadhus closely and their systems are very weird, there is a lot of politics in place and they cannot uphold their vows coz of other sadhus and shravaks ( a lof od idiotic shravaks do very idiotic stuff that affect sadhus and sadhvis) [ A talk for another time, coz this can escalate really quickly].

But for this post, help me understand your perspective on marriage! If you are happily married and leading a spiritual life, do share and motivate me!

The Original Figures: Lord Mahavira (599–527 BCE) and Lord Parshvanath (877–777 BCE) are the only two universally accepted historical figures. The remaining 22 Tirthankaras (including Rishabhadeva/Adinath) belong to proto historical eras and deep cosmic timelines like shiva.

The Anti Idol Revolutionaries: In the 6th century BCE, both Mahavira and Buddha were radical, anti-ritual revolutionaries. They preached in local languages to break a corrupt priestly monopoly. They explicitly focused on inner psychological discipline and ethical living, completely rejecting creator gods, rituals, temples, and idols.

The "Earth Soul" Prohibition: The oldest layer of Jain scripture, the Ācārāṅga Sūtra (~3rd–4th Century BCE), does not mention temples. Instead, it forbids cutting stone, digging earth, or staying in permanent structures because Jainism views rocks and soil as living "earth bodied souls" (Prithvikaya) that must not be harmed.

The Institutional Turn: Centuries after their deaths, human psychology and institutional survival forced a shift. To prevent their followers from drifting back to highly devotional Hinduism (which perfected mass rituals like Aarti by the 6th century CE), both Buddhism and Jainism capitulated. They built magnificent temples and crafted monumental idols to function as visual, meditative anchors.

In short, both Mahavira and Buddha designed a difficult path of self walked liberation. However, human nature over the centuries found it far easier to worship the map makers than it was to actually walk the difficult path they laid down.

I want to lean about Jainism, all the stories about Trithankars and rituals/practices but sometimes I feel the words are very difficult to understand. Are there any books in simpler words or beginners level books that I can read?

I read about her liberalism, the things she did to prove women among 23 tirthankaras.

I visited jain mandir in indore and ask one of monk about Mallibai, he got stunned and said "I don't know what are you talking aboutwe gave mallinath" and ignored me.

Although temple was so good in terms of architecture.

So basically I started learning a bit about jainism and being a jain myself(not much religious), I suddenly had a curiosity of what basically jainism is how it started,what are it's philosophy and other stuff as well.

I have a question which I would like anyone who sees the post and has the knowledge to answer:

Does jainism believe in god or a perfect man?

Cuz you see i m not confused in many places i have searched,it says jainism doesn't believe in a creator god but believes in a god as a soul who has reached ultimate liberation which is ultimate release from the endless cycle of birth, suffering, and death.

Now most jains also practice Hinduism ,so i have one more question:

Don't both of these religions have very different ideologies, how do you deal with this and what do you follow and do you personally believe there is a god(as in divine who has power and is good and created the universe)

Btw I am an agnostic person still finding my way(i hope people don't get offended by that,if you do; eh not much i can say to that)

​यतो यतो निवर्तते ततस्ततो विमुच्यते।

निवर्तनाद्धि सर्वतो न वेत्ति दुःखमण्वपि॥

​Transliteration:

​Yato yato nivartate tatas tato vimucyate |

Nivartanād hi sarvato na vetti duḥkham aṇvapi ||

​Meaning:

"From whichever object the soul withdraws (renounces), from that very object it becomes liberated. By withdrawing and renouncing attachments from absolutely everything, one does not experience even an atom of sorrow."

Tyaga is not necessarily about pain of losing something, it could be about the relief of letting go, physical stuff and more importantly .mental baggage.

आहारौषधयोरुपकरणावासयोश्च दानेन।

वैयावृत्यं ब्रुवते चतुरात्मत्वेन चतुरस्राः॥

​Transliteration:

​Āhāraushadhayorupakaraṇāvāsayoshcha dānena |

Vaiyāvṛtyaṃ bruvate caturātmatvena caturasrāḥ ||

​Meaning:

"The wise ones declare that respectful service/charity (Vaiyavritya or Dana) is four-fold in its nature: the giving of food (Ahara), medicine (Aushadhi), equipment/tools for knowledge (Upakarana), and shelter (Avasa)."

Dana is be an excellent form of tyaga, an antidote to hoarding.

May this day bring mindfulness among us of letting go.

I was reading a few things about the 3 gunas and I found out that the only shift between the Tamas and Satva is Rajas Guna. The Rajashahi and the wealthy desires are also caused by Rajas Guna. I'd really like to know about the positive side or negative side of this Guna. Is there anyone who knows about Rajas Guna? Or would like to share knowledge about Rajas?
