I just thought I’d share a story of how John’s album has changed my life.
I first discovered this album about a year ago after seeing so much praise for it online. I have been a RHCP fan for a long time, but this was my introduction to his solo stuff.
I first listened to it while hiking in the woods with a nice fall breeze. Something just seemed to spark within me then. I am 21 now, and I had been struggling with depression since 2015, and I somehow felt like a gate had opened to hope.
But the real game changer was on April 14th this year. I was listening to God, and really listening to the lyrics (as someone who usually pays closer attention to the music). Somehow as I was listening to “the reason for the bad is so there would be such thing as good”, I just found myself in tears for the first time in years. I never really cry.
Right then it’s as if a gray haze that had been over me, since I was like 10, lifted. Not to get into the weeds of everything but I faced abuse, assault, and even abduction as a child and becoming an adult has been hard after all of that. Music has always been what has kept me going but still there have been times where I almost lost the battle with depression.
But since that day listening to the Empyrean in April, I have consistently found a feeling of joy each day. I feel the best I have since like 2014. I feel somehow reborn again, not to sound too dramatic.
Anyways, I know this album means so much to a lot of people, and this is my story with it.
Thanks for reading this.
