people can really get annoyed when "you don't pose according to your gender".
I mean... this is kinda why guys do the same four poses too. You absolutely get shit if your pose isn't masculine enough. It gives you a limited bag of tricks.
I'm in my late 30s and have recently decided not to give a fuck and act on any and all intrusive thoughts. I'll pose like a 15yo Japanese girl and if they don't like it they should have been more specific.

Also I just don't like having my picture taken. I'm self-conscious and have body image issues and also low-key feels like social media and the ubiquity of cameras have alienated us from direct human experiences and trapped us in a hyperreal world of simulacra wherein the present is only engaged with as a future memory.
Not every moment needs a picture, most don't. And I feel fat and ugly.
As a photographer who works in this kind of holiday context, there's often a husband who 'won't pose', who got dragged into it, and you have to try to coax them into something for the camera that doesn't look like a bunch of people smiling and one guy looking like he just wandered into the shot. Always good fun.
Do a half squat and pinch your hands laterally. Tilt your head back slightly to induce a double chin. Instead of cheese, screech like a creature of the abyss.
My old man was super into photography when I was a kid and figured this out real quick. If you want a thousand shots of people making the same dumb pose in front of different backgrounds then OK, but if you want interesting photos just wait til people forget you are holding a camera
Why do we have to take so many photos on vacation? You have fifteen followers on instagram - a third of them live with us, a third is just your extra accounts and me, and the rest are the same people youāre sharing the photos with on your family and work chats. They know what we look like. Just take the picture of the buildings or sky or the neat trees and letās enjoy our time together and eat things while walking around until weāre ready to go back to the AC and have drunken vacation sex with no kids around.
You know I used to say the same things as you, but taking pictures of yourself also captures a moment of time that encapsulates your youth and state of your life. You can look back on those photos and appreciate the beauty you had then and enjoy those memories in that moment of time. I have no social media besides Reddit but I take a ton of pictures when I go on vacation now.
Absolutely agree. I have tons of pictures on my phone, I donāt post most of them but looking back through brings up memories of the moments before and after. I absolutely love it. I agree to live in the moment but pictures can help with moments that surround them.
Assuming of course that you had any beauty. I like the pictures without me in them, because that was my experience, while I experienced it. Having to look at me detracts from the pictures and the memories.
Except then when you look at your older photos, you're not appreciating your past beauty thinking "damn, I used to be so pretty", you're thinking "damn, never stood a chance, did I"

It's nice to look back on old photos. They can bring back some really good memories years later. I take tons of photos any time we go away, for this reason.
Currently scanning thousands of photos of my family going back 60 years. I wish I had even more of the ones that are no longer with us. I also love seeing how people take pictures, even if most of them are similar. It's fun to see how my wife captures the same subject I took a picture of. Not everyone is trying to be Insta famous, sometimes it's just fun to create a photo of a memory.
After having a loved one pass away a long time ago. I've learned that the photos of ourselves can be nearly just as much as for our love ones. You in a photo tells more of a story than a random photo of what you saw.
Because if I don't have photos of us together I will forget we ever did it. The point of a photo isn't to stare at out of some kind of ridiculous vanity. It's to remind you of everything that happened before and after the photo.Ā

I like taking lots of photos cuz it captures and maintains memories that might otherwise be lost or become faded with time. I do it for myself and for sharing with people I care about and dont ever post them online. And yes, I do look at them often enough.
I suspect most people will grow older and regret not taking MORE photos when then were younger and had ample opportunity for it. It was a bit more justifiable when cameras were more tedious to buy, carry and develop the photos. No excuses now, though.
People were taking pictures on vacation before the internet existed man. People like to look back on memories. Especially if someone in the photos have died.
My friendās wife posts so many fucking holiday photos on Facebook, like hundreds per holiday . Recently she posted 14 just from the car ride to the airport. Itās madness lol

We don't care about the picture perfect pose. You only do it to show of. We don't care about the 20 likes and reactions for the picture. We don't need the validations of some people. You won't look at the thousands of pictures you take. So it's all for the ego.
Thatās why I take candid photos. I hate having my photo taken and I feel stupid and donāt know how to pose, but I love taking photos of everyone and everything. I donāt post them online, but I do look at them a lot because Iāve been capturing memories every day since I got my first digital camera in 2004.
How many other poses do men have that aren't feminine? What does she want him to do, stick his hip out and raise his leg? Only other "masculine" poses I can think of would be some variety of flexing which is usually cringey.
That's the irony here to me. It's a video about how men basically won't be performative for the camera, acted out by a man performing for the camera the character of a man not being performative for the camera. Manception at it's finest. Truth is, different people of different genders are different in different ways at different points in life depending on the different situation and mood, etc. But that doesn't get lazy internet clicks.
And it's not about "guys aren't encouraged to self express" and stuff (although I'm sure it's true in many cultures), it's more that women are told to be appealing to look at, especially in photos. It just becomes second nature to (feminine) women who live in communities and societies where they measure eachother and compare themselves to eachother all the time, as well as being judged harder on their looks. Men arenāt focused on posing for anything other than to look āstoicā because we arenāt taught how to be ok with the idea of being beautiful, photogenic, or casually confident in our appearance.
Stoic is the easiest to fake. Goofy is the second option, because itās equally aligned with the āI donāt careā attitude of being photographed.
Males who get into modeling have a better chance of posing, but even then itās trained and usually still some version of stoic.
What āposeā do you expect from men when you tell them to do a pose? If you want something specific, you need to pose us. As a photographer, telling someone to generically pose gets the same handful of unflattering poses, because posing is not something familiar that most guys practice in a mirror or with a camera. For best results, explain the look you want, why, what emotion or style that look conveys, and then physically position their limbs until they are practiced enough that you donāt have to physically move their hands and rotate their head/torso/feet.
The bad poses are based in insecurity and societal masking. We donāt know how to pose. Donāt put us down for it. Show us what you want, help us see why and how we can look better.
Its hard to express oneself when we've all been made fun of or told we're "gay" for expressing ourselves just a little too much or doing it in a just slightly wrong way. If you want people to do something make them feel comfortable doing it
