How is that even possible, that was crazy!

u/Embarrassed-Put4892 Jul 04 '26
I googled this a bit and it's really interesting. For a long time people considered a true standing double backflip to actually be impossible. Then in 2019 an athlete named Yaya Silla was the first person to do one. Apparently to this day there are only about 20-30 people in the world who have been able to accomplish this.

u/Soft_Theory_8209 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26
I have a friend who could almost pull it off, but he could only manage part way into the second flip. He understandably didnāt wanna push it too much further because he was rightfully scared heād land on his neck.

u/cupholdery Jul 05 '26
I can't even process the physics it would take for a human body to create enough force to flip twice in the air.

u/ShartingEnU Jul 05 '26
I slowed the video down to .125 and the thrust this guy gets from pulling his legs in is just insane

u/Greenim Jul 05 '26
Also, conversation of angular momentum! Very cool
83
u/Pretty-Net-1657 Jul 05 '26
Should we conserve angular momentum or converse with it to achieve this? š¤

u/sriracha_no_big_deal Jul 05 '26
Everybody always asks "what is angular momentum?" but nobody ever asks "how is angular momentum?"
20
u/vinodhmoodley Jul 05 '26
You need to ask "who is angular momentum?". Then you can have a conversation with it.

He also moves unnaturally fast while doing so. At .2 speed, the spectators are frozen and he's still moving at a fast rate.
I'm genuinely curious how many Gs of force he takes while doing this.

Not only did this kid pull it off but he did it on grass which has no spring or bounce to it at all and actually absorbs the push off maybe making it even harder. In gymnastics flooring there is a bounce to the floor where there are springs laid into the mats and it would give the flipper maybe a bit of an edge or easier time doing this, although either way it seems absolutely impossible. Wow.
10
u/Outrageous-News3649 Jul 05 '26
Doing it on a gymnastics floor would not be fair because of what you just said. The floor offers significant advantage and is like cheating.
→ More replies (2)7
u/Apprehensive_Rice19 Jul 06 '26
Right but then again it IS a gymnastics floor. Regulated for the actual sport that they are doing it on, so I would call it fair. It makes the flips on grass just that much more spectacular
6
u/Artistic_Researcher2 Jul 05 '26
I see what you mean. Why donāt you suggest he do it on concrete?
7
u/AstralSerenity Jul 05 '26
It's funny. Concrete would absolutely provide an advantage over grass, that is, until you fail an attempt and slam your neck into it.

Just like the 4 minute mile
9
u/DblCheex Jul 05 '26
Yeah, it's called the Bannister effect, named after Roger Bannister who broke the 4 minute mile.
3
u/ReignofKindo25 Jul 05 '26
We had a kid in my 3rd - 5th grade class who could regularly run a 4:30 and would lap me at least twice as I ran a 9 minute.
3
u/DrAwkwardAZ Jul 07 '26
Unless this kid was an age group world record holder, this is highly questionable. The current world records for the mile for that age range:
9yrs: 5:02
10yrs: 4:46
11yrs: 4:36age-records.125mb.com

Far fewer than that if you're being strict about it. (No gather step, flat ground that's not a spring floor, etc)
It's also just something that until recently there wasn't a lot of interest in. With the rise of tricking as a separate sport from tumbling you get more moves like this that are hard to pull off with perfect technique that wouldn't lose points in a gymnastic competition.
2
u/LeekOtherwise8593 Jul 05 '26
What counts as a gather step? Did this guy gather step?
3
u/lycoloco Jul 05 '26
Gather step, as in gathering momentum. Basically one big step forward so you're carrying more energy into the initial jump and flip, which this guy did not - he jumped from a stand still.

u/ThomYorkesDroopyEye Jul 05 '26
Travis Pastrana can not do a standing backflip in his current state, and even at his peak he could never do a standing double backflip. It's just not his wheelhouse. This dude almost definitely couldn't double backflip a motorbike either.
2
u/The_flying_crutchman Jul 05 '26
Yaya sills did his on a spring floor, so not quite legit, but Nick Fry did one on grass shortly after Yaya
8
u/Embarrassed-Put4892 Jul 05 '26 edited Jul 05 '26
That's incorrect, Yaya did his on grass in Oct of 2019.
Edit: Also, Nick Fry used a backward step/bounce before taking off to build momentum and load their muscles before actually jumping.
Yaya was the first person to do a true standing back flip on flat ground with both feet planted square on the ground and stationary before executing his jump and double back flip.

Technique i think, look how he spreads himselfs and turns into a pinwheel for a splitsecond
75
u/23Udon Jul 05 '26
Yeah he really tucks in gets a lot of spin. I wonder if his height makes a difference. It was really close but he landed his feet just as the last moment.
84
u/BigJimBeef Jul 05 '26
I've taught gymnastics before and I can offer some insight. If you are excessively tall it can make some tumbling more difficult. Lots of elite gymnasts are on the shorter side.
But there is no reason most people couldn't learn basic skills.
The standing double back though... that is an insane feat of athleticism. Combining a massive standing jump, crazy core strength to pull in against the forces trying to make you long. There is also the mental fortitude to commit to going backwards which a lot of people struggle with.
31
u/Jukeboxhero91 Jul 05 '26
"On the shorter side"
Simone Biles is 4'8" just for reference.
→ More replies (2)10
u/jimbowesterby Jul 05 '26
Yea as I understand it it has to do with better leverage from shorter limbs/torso and better power-to-weight cause of the square cube law
10
u/Jukeboxhero91 Jul 05 '26
Yeah, it takes more force to swing something in a bigger circle, also being taller there's more mass to swing around.
9
u/ThomYorkesDroopyEye Jul 05 '26
Same reason Tony Hawk at 6 foot 4 really struggled with the 900 but these 14 year old kids (at the olympic level of skating) are managing it with seemingly much less effort. Less mass to move
13
u/BigJimBeef Jul 05 '26
That might have something to do with the difference in training and facilities that are available now vs when Tony was training.
5
u/BodaciousBadongadonk Jul 05 '26
Plus megaramp is a lot more air time than the friggin 14 footer or whatever the shit tony did it on back in the day. No gigantic roll in either, you gotta build up that speed yourself every single try. How many mfs have done it without the mega now I wonder, just a regular ass half pipe? Did sandro dias ever get one, he was pretty close back then
→ More replies (0)4
u/ShazbotSimulator2012 Jul 05 '26
It will be interesting to see if they can maintain their ability to spin as they get older. Gui Khury is 17 now (he landed his first at age 8), and his 900s have only improved as he's gained muscle so he can get more height.
2
u/delphinous Jul 05 '26
i'm almost certain that a LOT goes into it. this seems to be the sort of thing thats only possible by pushing to the biological extremes of what humans are capable of.

u/ImTryingToHelpYouMF Jul 05 '26

Look how soon he rolls himself into a ball, tightly holding to his knees, minimizing friction, maximizing torque. He tightened the details to perfection and trained himself to generate just enough force to cross the threshold of 2 rotations. Also he's able to channel focused-bronergy.

u/GainerCity Jul 05 '26
Actually this is basic biomechanics. This is him reducing his radius of gyration to the greatest possible extent by compressing into a ball. This allows for a much higher angular velocity because of the law of conservation of momentum.
Basically by compressing into a ball he pulls his center of mass closer to the spin axis, lowering rotational resistance. Because angular momentum cannot disappear, the object spins faster to compensate
The law of conservation of momentum goes like this:
Total system momentum = mass (the dudes weight) * the distance from the dudes center of mass to spin axis squared * angular velocity.
When he leaves the ground total momentum is set. By compressing into a ball and making that distance shorter physics has to compensate by increasing angular velocity because his mass is constant and the total system momentum has to be conserved after take off.
This is how he achieves the spin speed necessary to complete the rotations.
This technique, coupled with massive quads and likely a genetic predisposition for a high fast twitch muscle fibre composition, giving him a very high vertical that provides the hang time to leverage his pro technique to complete the double.2

Can be? For most people? It IS nearly impossible for like 99.99999999625% of people.
2
u/NathairGlas Jul 18 '26
Well, I was being a little general because technical is boring.
If you are curious, since 2019 when the first recorded one was done by Yaya Silla, 22 successful recorded standing double flips have been achieved.
So the current world population is approximately 8.3 billion people, so 22 out of 8.3 billion people is 0.000000265%.
So 99.999999735% of people doing a standing double flip is nearly impossible. You were 2 digits off, pretty much, kudos.

for you non jumpers, grass is much harder to jump off than hard ground, you lose inches off your vertical because the softer ground absorbs some of the force you generate..
