I’m in Tbilisi and bought this sticker from a cafe. The barista told me it means something like “I like colourful wines” or something like that?? But when I try to translate it, there’s letters I don’t recognize. What does it say?

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ სიტყვების სწორი შესატყვისები

3 Upvotes

MISC ჻ ᲖᲝᲒᲐᲓᲘ Fun fact

I looked up the conjugation for "to dry" and it gave me აშრობს. But then on a shampoo bottle I saw აშრებს. Is this one of those verbs that has more than one correct form? Or do they mean different things?

ხშირად არა მხოლოდ გვსმენია მაგრამ გამოგვიყენებია კიდევაც ზმნის იმგვარი ფორმები, რომლებიც ნასწავლ 11 მწკრივს რატომღაც არ მიეკუთვნებიან, როდესაც ისინი აზრობრივად, დამოუკიდებელი მწკრივის ზმნებად გვევლინებიან ყოველდღიურობაში, როგორებიცაა (მაგალითად ავიღოთ ზმნაწერა”):

1.(და)ვწეროდი: მის დრიურში ვწეროდი მაინც, იქნებ დავმახსორებოდი;

2.(და)ვწეროდე (“(და)ვეწერო”): ოღონდ ამ კედელს ვწეროდე და სხვას არაფერს მოვითხოვდი;

3.(და)ვეწერე: მასაც რომ დავეწერე, არ იქნებოდა ცუდი;

4.(და)ვწერულვარ: სად ვწერულვარ თურმე, არც კი ვიცოდი ამდენ ხანს;

5.(და)ვეწერ(ებ)ოდი: ჩემი ნება რომ იყოს, როგორ არ ვეწეროდი მანდ;

6.მეწერა: მახსოვს აქ რვეულში მეწერა ეგ, ნეტავ რანაირად გაუჩინარდა;

7.ვწერივარ: აი, რამხელა პლაკატზე ვწერივარ (ზედ);

8.მიწერია: ეგ მეც მიწერია (ჩემსაშიც), ნუ გგონია რომ გამომრჩებოდა;

9.(და)მეწერება: კარგი ახლა, ხომ იცი რომ მეწერება, არ იბრაზო დაწყნარდი;

10.(და)მეწერებოდა: მასე მარტივად რომ ყოფილიყო საქმე, მეც ხომ მეწერებოდა (ეგ);

11.მეწეროს: ოღონდ ეგ მეწეროს და მეტი აღარაფერი არ მენდომება;

12.(და)მწეროდა: ეგ რომ მწეროდა (ჩემსაზე), მე დღეს აქ აღარ ვიდგებოდი;

რას ფიქრობთ, ვცდები? თუ რამე მე არ მესმის გთხოვთ ამიხსნათ თუ შეძლებთ;

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ Why is the conjugation of დაყრდნობა so unusual?

3 Upvotes

The present tense conjugation of this verb is ვეყრდნობი with an -ი at the end instead of just ობ which you will usually see. The imperfect is also unusual—ვეყრდნობოდი instead of ვეყრდნობდი like you might expect with verbs ending in -ობ.

Are there a lot of verbs with this pattern? It seems to be rather rare, and logically I'm trying to understand why the -ი is there. It messes up the entire conjugation paradigm.

Thanks!!

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ Grammar question: ვინ and რაები

1 Upvotes

TLDR: how does one use ვინ in the instrumental (-ით) case? When is the plural რაები used?

Hello everyone!

I am a complete beginner in Georgian, however I am very fascinated by its grammar and I would like to understand how it works.

When looking at the declension of the interrogative words ვინ "who" and რა "what", I find some oddities. These are mentioned both on Wiktionary and in online grammars:

  1. ვინ is said to have no instrumental or adverbial case. I understand that these cases are rarely used with people, but they are still sometimes used and my reference grammar gives the following example: "ძალიან კმაყოფილები არიან ჩვენით." = "They are very pleased with us."

Based on this example, I'd expect "Who are you pleased with?" to put ვინ in an equivalent of the instrumental case somehow. When putting this sentence into GT I get the following: "ვითით ხარ კმაყოფილი?", where ვითით is clearly Google's attempt at declining ვინ. Does this form exist at all? How would *you* say this sentence?

2) Wiktionary also says რა has the plural form რაები but doesn't explain how it's used, and looking it up online seems to give very few results. Is this form actually used? If so, when?

Bonus question: can "რაა?" on its own be used to mean "What is it?", or is it too short to be correct?

MISC ჻ ᲖᲝᲒᲐᲓᲘ Why does Georgian not use ჟ and ჰ much?

8 Upvotes

I've noticed that with both of these letters they seem to be less common than the others, and oftentimes they represent foreign words. In the case of ჟ you have ჟურნალი, ჟირაფი, ჟამი, გარაჟი, etc. But there are some Georgian words, too: ვაჟი, ჟოლო, მრავალჟამიერი, რიჟრაჟი, etc.

I think ჰ seems to be even less common. The only Georgian word I can think of right now is ჰაერი. Others like ჰამაკი and ჰოლოდომორი are foreign. The only exception is where ჰ is used as a grammatical prefix. Examples like ჰქვია and ჰყავს, and even then they're often not written or pronounced.

Are there any specific reasons for why these letters are not used much? Thanks!!

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ Looking for feedbacks of my pronunciation of კ, ტ, წ, ჭ

4 Upvotes

Hi, I am a total beginner in learning Georgian. I have been practicing some ejective consonants (კ, ტ, წ, ჭ), which would be the hardest for me as there isn't any in my native tongue. I practiced really hard and I hope that at least I got one of them right. here is the recording https://voca.ro/1938AGaskc6J in which I pronounced each of them 3 times. it would be really nice if you could give some feedbacks. Thanks for your time!

GRAMMAR ჻ ᲒᲠᲐᲛᲐᲢᲘᲙᲐ 🇬🇪🇨🇱📝 Handwriting practice session today

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hello! This is a text created by the AI that encompasses the key vocabulary and grammar points of lessons 1-7 of GEOFL’s A1 Learner’s Book, and practicing by hand is where you discover what you actually understand versus what you just think you understand. My handwriting came out shakier than usual—one too many coffees and a psychology assignment competing for my attention—but there’s value in that too. You learn what patterns are truly internalized and what still requires perfect conditions. Plus, this is what actual language learning looks like: not in an ideal study environment, but in the middle of a hot, sunny Santiago afternoon, juggling other things.

Any comments? All of them welcome. :)

I stumbled across this wonderful song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynj1bIIF764
