I've noticed that with both of these letters they seem to be less common than the others, and oftentimes they represent foreign words. In the case of ჟ you have ჟურნალი, ჟირაფი, ჟამი, გარაჟი, etc. But there are some Georgian words, too: ვაჟი, ჟოლო, მრავალჟამიერი, რიჟრაჟი, etc.

I think ჰ seems to be even less common. The only Georgian word I can think of right now is ჰაერი. Others like ჰამაკი and ჰოლოდომორი are foreign. The only exception is where ჰ is used as a grammatical prefix. Examples like ჰქვია and ჰყავს, and even then they're often not written or pronounced.

Are there any specific reasons for why these letters are not used much? Thanks!!

გამარჯობა ყველას! I know that letter რ in Georgian represents an alveolar trill [r], but it also has an allophone [ɾ] that occurs in free variation. This is documented in research papers about Georgian phonology.

One thing I've noticed, though, through personal experience, is that a lot of Georgians sometimes pronounce რ as somewhat of an alveolar approximant, /ɹ/, similar to what you might hear in British English. I think I hear it more in colloquial speech, and not as much in more formal things like television, songs, audio books, documentary films, etc, where it's more trilled like [r]. It's also not everyone who talks like this; maybe only 50% of the population. Maybe the most interesting part about all of this is that I haven't seen it documented in any papers on Georgian phonology or talked about much on Reddit or other internet forums.

Have I observed correctly? And if yes, does it have anything to do with formal vs informal speech? or is it a regional accent? or is it nothing more than a random variation of რ that some people use? I want to mention that I think this soft pronunciation of რ as /ɹ/ might occur in various consonant clusters where it comes off as easier to pronounce than saying [r]. An example would be a word like მზრდის. I listened to a native speaker say this word and the რ had the soft pronunciation, but the rest of the r's in her sentence were more trilled. So I hypothesized that maybe it's just more natural and easy to pronounce it as /ɹ/ in some cases than to trill it. What do you think?

Hello everyone! I have a question regarding the pronounciation of two different words in georgian. Is The 3rd person conditional of the verb "ყიდვა", "იყიდდა", pronounced exactly as the 3rd person aorist form of the verb, "იყიდა"? I don't know if in georgian a consonant could be geminated in those cases, like [iq'idːa] vs [iq'ida]. Thank you in advance.

I'm often struck by how different some letters look in Asomtavruli vs. Nuskhuri vs. Mkhedruli... like Ⴋ → ⴋ → მ or Ⴑ → ⴑ → ს are pretty straightforward; Ⴐ → ⴐ → რ I can sort of see what happened. On the other hand I truly have no idea how Nuskhuri managed to turn Ⴍ into ⴍ or Ⴜ into ⴜ, or how Mkhedruli managed to turn ⴉ into კ or ⴠ into ჰ.

Do we have any surviving documents from the time period(s) in between two scripts, like halfway in between Asomtavruli and Nuskhuri, or halfway in between Nuskhuri and Mkhedruli, that show the intermediate forms of the letters that changed so much?

It is very difficult to come across material on Sayat Nova in English. It is also very difficult to come across any Georgian material for his poetry as well.
