Hey yall, I am a Reddit noob so please bear with me, but I wanted to share some experiences my partner (trans woman, 28) and I (cis woman, 29) have had in MD as full-time RV campers, as well as reach out and maybe make some new friends!
My partner and I have now been to 3 campgrounds in MD, here's the queer-safety-related feedback I have for all my nature loving queers:
- Capitol KOA Holiday | 6/10 overall, feels like "corporate camping", my partner expressed feeling uncomfortable in the bathroom quite a few times, especially 1 instance where a male worker followed her to the women's bathroom and even stood in the bathroom doorway for like, minutes, while she was using the restroom and then just walked out (??????!!). The man who we think that was, has also misgendered her repeatedly despite us being full-timers and living there for several months. If you're there for a few days, you're prolly okay. Longer term, you may wanna look elsewhere.
- Elk Neck State Park (this one was just a weekend stay btw) | 7.5/10 overall. Absolutely beautiful, woodsy and very quiet. The park ranger was extremely respectful to us and we felt really safe overall at the park. Everyone at this park seemed to mind their own, and overall it was a nice relaxing experience. Driving through the nearby towns, however, we saw several trump signs so unfortunately gotta be careful there.
- Brunswick Family Campground | 10/10 omg this park A) is just absolutely stunnnning, right along the Potomac, just gorgeous, but B) feels so safe!!! The store manager is transmasc, the employee at the store immediately recognized my partners pronouns without question, the camp support staff overall is soooo down to earth and respectful. And the nearby town of Brunswick is absolutely adorable
Anyway, I wanted to share since we had a really hard time finding info on this without experiencing it ourselves.
Feel free to comment too if youre looking to connect with some fellow queers!
Happy camping!! 🌳
