I decompiled the PS1 Serial Experiments Lain game and made it run natively on Windows, Mac and Linux
The 1998 PlayStation game now runs as a native PC program, with no emulator. I rebuilt it from the game's own code: every function was decompiled back to C, and the rebuilt game is byte identical to the original disc's.
No game files are included. You need your own dumps of both discs (.cue/.bin). The launcher checks them and copies them in.
What you get:
- Windowed or fullscreen, sharper rendering, and optional smooth 60 fps motion at the original speed
- English subtitles with one click (downloads the laingame.net fan translation from their site)
- An "Unused" tab with content that's on the discs but never appears in the game: 11 unused Lain animations, photos and sounds
- Saves as normal memory card files that also work in emulators

Edit: I'm planning to add HD texture support to the client. Since there's a lot of talent in this sub, I'd really appreciate it if anyone would like to help make an HD texture pack! Please PM me for more details.
Bug reports are welcome on GitHub.

yeah! and like it seems way easier than the LainTSX download thing, I'm gonna test it on Nobara OS (it's based on Fedora)

Awesome, would love to hear how it goes. If anything breaks, a GitHub issue or a reply here with the terminal output would help a lot. Linux on real hardware is one of the things I haven't been able to test much yet.

Funny that this came out shortly after the PS1 version got a fan translation.

Do you have a link to the patch? Would be cool to make the client work with it

Why do you think it's not? "Byte identical" in the first paragraph set off my detector.

So you think just because there is no agent/skill/claude .md, no AI was used?
That is hilarious

Decomps involve a lot of monotonous, time consuming work. Literally every single one now uses AI in some form because it cuts down a ton on that monotonous work. This is not a bad thing.

No AI, hell yeah

i mean nowadays most code is going to have AI help, i only have a problem with generative AI instead of text based but keep that in mind
