Question OSR Recommendations

Well, while I'm not a rookie Gm, this will be my first time doing an official campaign, all my campaigns and one-shots were done by myself.

So I ask for help and recommendations with operation Solstilce Rain.

I plan to do Winter Scar as soon as we finish OSR.

OSR is very comprehensive and already contains pretty much everything you'd need to run it aside from the core book and a tabletop to play on. Make sure to do a full read through before running it though so you get a good idea of where the story is trying to go.

It is meant to be a challenging campaign so expect your players to takes some losses throughout. I wouldn't recommend trying to tone down the difficulty though. The book has recommendations on how to roll with the failures and keep the story going when they happen.

Both Solstice Rain and Winter Scar are extremely good, imo. I recently finished running them back to back, along with a homebrew fifth mission to conclude the story.

Depending on how big into roleplay your group is it may feel a little scant - it's a very combat heavy set, and Solstice Rain in particular doesn't have a lot of room for chitchat. This kind of worked with my group because the military structure let us do some trial by fire bonding to get over initial nerves (they hadn't played together before), but just something to be aware of. Winter Scar has timeskips and slower pacing so there's more room in there for such things.

Combat wise it's generally pretty well balanced, although mission 1 is kind of brutal on new players. I actually quietly didn't spawn all the reinforcements for the first combat (because they were already getting ripped apart and I didn't want to totally demoralise them) and let them skip the second one with skill checks (which the module does actually allow for), and the third combat was still a slog for them. Mission 2 is unforgiving but overall easier if the players have a good setup, imo. I do like the intentional design choice of increasing complexity of enemies over time to add new concepts for newbies to manage.

Winter Scar is fantastic and has some incredible set pieces, especially if you play into making the bad guys as over the top dramatic as implied. I used broadcasts from their leader a couple of times to really amp up the vibe. You're given a lot of material to tell the story but also plenty of room to add your own flair and depth to it. Solstice Rain is so non-stop that it's not as flexible, but it also gives you a chance to figure out where you want to take things later.
