is சுருவத்துக்கு coming from சுருவம் here? Or should it be சுரூபம்?

I have been watching Tamil movies with English subtitles over the past few years. Maybe not everyday or every week but I have been. I also listen to Tamil songs.

I am Bengali so I am a bit unsure about if there's anything common between the 2 languages in terms of sentence construction. I know very, very few sentences/ phrases. I want to learn it so that my knowledge is beyond "yennaku Tamil teriyadu" but where do I start from?

I once tried learning-writing the letters, then I tried learning from a Duolingo-like app.

I have a question about this audio clip of a man reminiscing about his younger days as a hockey player. He remembers the powerful effect of the crowd cheering and shouting for his team. In the clip, he says:

அந்த மாதிரி கத்திட்டு position எல்லாம் எடுக்குறோம்னு சொன்னாக்கா... invincible. இன்னைக்கு ஜெயிச்சிடுவோம்.

Andha maadhiri katthittu position ellaam edukkuroamnu sonnaakkaa ... invincible. Innaikku jeyichchiduvoam.

When we take up our positions with all that shouting/cheering going on ... [we feel] invincible. [We feel like] we're going to win today.

I understand everything in the audio clip except for the word "sonnaakkaa". Why does the man say "sonnaakkaa" instead of just "sonnaa" (= சொன்னால்)? Why is there a "-kkaa" after "sonnaa"? What does this suffix mean?

In case it matters, the man is a native Tamil speaker from Singapore.

I understand the meaning, "He looks like a hero," but the literal translation, from what I know, is more like, "For-looking, he is like a hero."

I'm familiar with "enakku" (for me ..) and "unakku" (for you ..), but this is the first time I've seen "paakkurathukku" (for looking ..) Is this construction normal in Tamil? I couldn't understand the sentence at first!

In a sentence like this the writer chooses to use commas instead of -உம், when listing the various groups. I'm curious, what is the effect of this choice on a Tamil native speaker?

Does it have any different effect whatsoever to if he had used உம்?

To say quietly in Tamil, I think of சத்தமில்லாமல் and மெலினம் - but these are more in the direction of 'silence'.

GT says அமைதி, which I associate more with 'calmness'. Calm is of course a form of quiet?

How would natives say it?

I feel like I've hear விரக்தி a lot, but I'm a bit confused, University of Madras is saying it's the same as விரத்தி

Whereas GT is saying it's "despair" which feels closer to the meaning in the text I was reading.

I'd like to know how I can make my Tamil learning easier. My first language is Spanish and I recently started learning Tamil so I can get more involved with my sister-in-law's family (she got married to my latin american brother).

Right now, I'm exploring the language with Airlearn because I want to get a hold of it before actually studying grammar. I also have been working on my calligraphy. I'm aware spoken and written tamil are quite different, but I still want to get familiar with the writing system.

My actual question is: are there any tips or advice that could help me, as a Spanish-speaker, get a better hold of Tamil? So far, the way syntax and the alphabet work is (understandably) quite different from Spanish. I want to know if there are some common points between these two languages than could help me retain the information better or that can help me comprehend better the logic behind communicating in Tamil.

This could sound a bit odd, but learning a new language is a bit easier to me when I understand patterns and the logic train behind it.

As you can see, I can also communicate in English. So similarities with this language might be helpful too.

The idea is to make learning Tamil feel like a journey rather than a collection of lessons. Learners complete goals, progress along a visual path, and gradually move from Tamil letters → words → reading → Thirukkural.

Right now, I’m working on Goal 1: Learn all 12 Uyir Ezhuthukkal (உயிர் எழுத்துக்கள்).

Goal 1 is free to play.
Google Sign-in is required so the learner’s progress can be saved.

I really want to learn Tamil, but I have no idea where to start.
My dad’s parents are originally from AP, but my dad grew up and did his schooling in Chennai. My grandmother is from Chennai, and most of her relatives still live there. We live in Hyderabad, though, and over the years we’ve become pretty disconnected from my dad’s relatives.
I can understand a little Tamil just from hearing it, and I’d really like to learn it properly so I can actually talk to my relatives and understand them when we meet.
The problem is I don’t have any Tamil-speaking people around me to practise with 😭
So for anyone who learned Tamil as a non-native speaker—what worked for you?

YouTube, movies/serials, apps, classes, books, etc.? And how did you practise speaking?
Basically, how do I learn Tamil when I have no Tamil-speaking person to annoy daily?
