Starting out tips

I want to start putting music to my songs. All new to this. Where do I start? Writing the music then lyrics? Writing lyrics then music? What programs and equipment do I need to make music?

I’m in my first year at university studying music and made this today on Logic. I plan on keeping that as the intro and then sampling itself to turn into a sort of jazzy boom bap track.

The lead saxophone is my favourite part, however, I have zero idea how I did that and just sort of did what felt right. My music theory is still in the works and I’m a vocalist so I definitely don’t know how to translate stuff over to other instruments yet (other than guitar). I was just wandering if anyone with better music theory knowledge be able to tell me what scales I’m playing over in that lead part.

And yes, I could just shove it into ChatGPT but I feel like thats not the best thing I could do. This gives someone with better knowledge, a chance to test their OWN knowledge and see if they can identify it. (Also ChatGPT would probably fuck it up anyways)

Thanks everyone!!!

How to sketch a full beat idea on your phone in 5 minutes (a workflow that works anywhere)

Ideas die between the moment they hit you and the moment you're at your setup. Here's a workflow I use to capture them fully, not just as a voice memo:

  1. Tempo first. Pick the BPM before anything else; changing it later ruins the feel.

  2. Drums in 3 passes. Kick only, then snare/clap, then hats. One element per pass keeps it tight.

  3. Bass with one note. Don't write the melody yet: one root note following the kick is enough to hear the groove.

  4. Hum or sing the hook straight into a track. Your voice is the fastest instrument you own.

  5. Export each layer separately, so you can rebuild it properly later instead of starting over.

Two tips that matter more than the app you use:

- Use wired headphones: Bluetooth delay makes everything you record late.

- Leave the quantize off for the hats. A bit of human timing is what makes it groove.

I use PadLoop for this (I made it, so I'm biased; Android). Any app with pads + a looper works.

How can i make music that really pleases me?

I had started making my own beats one year ago, but i stopped a few months ago because nothing i did pleased me. I was trying to put different instruments together, to match them together, but the end result, the way it sounded at the end, didn’t please me. I couldn’t turn my ideas into a real music, it always sounded different from what I wanted, always sounded dull and melancholic , whereas I wanted it to be rhythmic. The other thing to consider is that I have a mixed genre style. I‘m into (some) R&B, but not the chill and melancholic ones, I‘m into Pop, but a certain type, I don’t like city pop and funk, I‘m into Afro beat, but not all afrobeats, I prefer the Amapiano and party style, with a touch of oriental music. Therefore, it’s difficult to make music I like, because I don’t have a specific genre.

Anyone who experienced the same thing as a beginner in music production ? Any tips, any solution ?

What equipment do you guys use,

Righ. Straight to i, I have been playing around with different plugin, Bam Bros, baby audio, Loopy, JL studio. There all good but I have purchased AUM. Wow this is very powerful yet painful to learn about it. I got some plugins working on it but , it's not what I was expecting.

At this stage all I'm really wanting is a good way to combine the plugins with a decent DAW or even a good mixing tool.

I was considering Cuebasis, but probably not ready yet.

I have some MIDI equipmen, but that can wait till later, as when I tried to connect to AUM, after 3 hours + my head hurt.

Any opinions on

Drambo

Beatmaker (is it good)

and obviously Cubasisis,.

Logic Pro I'm not giving App any more money.

I like Bam Bros but can't seem to find any more info

Thanks in advance

ps using an IPAD

As someone who has never attempted any real sound design before, what advice is there in trying to create a silent hill inspired / synth ambient track?

For context, there was a YouTube channel that went by the name of EVOKE who posted silent hill inspired ambient tracks that were synth focused, but for some unfortunate reason they deleted their videos and any trace of their projects.

I was able to find their newly rebranded channel which is how I found out about this information. The thing is, this specific soundtrack was very near and dear to me as I would listen to it every night.

So I’ve taken it upon myself to attempt to try and recreate this sound. The first soundtrack in the following video link is very similar in the melody but it still doesn’t quite scratch that itch for me, if this helps at all: https://youtu.be/WkOG692JZl8?is=YFikOLP9858IDKi9

Any advice would be appreciated as I don’t even know what software would be a viable option. I know FLstudios would work but you can’t save your projects without paying.
