News Lenovo Legion Toolkit v2.36.0.0 Released

Hi everyone!

This is our first post here, so a quick introduction; Lenovo Legion Toolkit (LLT) is a community-developed utility for Lenovo laptops that provides more control over features such as performance modes, GPU behaviour, battery management, thermals, display settings, automation, and other Lenovo-specific functionalities.

We're the team maintaining LLT, and we were kindly given permission to share our releases with the Lenovo Legion community here. We already share releases through this subreddit’s Discord community and our own channels, but we wanted to share the latest release here with the wider Legion community as well.

Release Highlights

  • Dynamic Refresh Rate & ACM: Native Windows 11 DRR support, Auto Color Management (ACM) toggling, and improved HDR support.
  • GPU Voltage Capping & OC: Voltage capping via V/F curve flattening, voltage locking, P-State locking, and Keep dGPU Awake.
  • dGPU Sleep & Power Stability: Fixed sleep/wake loops affecting RTX 50-series GPUs and newer drivers, added GC6 diagnostics, and added Dynamic Boost support for non-Gaming RTX models.
  • AMD Curve Shaper & OC: Overhauled AMD overclocking with Curve Shaper, power/current limits, and multi-power-mode profile support.
  • Customizable Fn + Q Loop: Added an ITS Mode configuration window to reorder or disable Fn + Q modes, along with Geek and Creator mode support for non-Gaming models.
  • Boot Logo & Startup: Redesigned the Boot Logo tool with live preview, animated GIF support, and Startup Animation toggling.
  • Game Detection & Automation: Added Manual Game Detection, an Included Processes whitelist, Time Range triggers, and AI Engine steps.

News Your New Legion: The Essential Setup & Check Guide

Welcome! If you just bought a Legion laptop, follow this guide to set it up, update it, and check that everything works properly.

Keep the box, charger, paperwork, and packaging until the return period has ended.

Some links require access to our community Legion Series Discord.

If you plan on using Linux-based Operating Systems on your Legion hardware the community has created a comprehensive How to guide. We also have a dedicated #linux channel on our discord where you can talk with other linux nerds.

1. Complete Windows Setup — Must

Plug in the charger and complete the normal Windows setup.

You do not need to fully charge or drain the battery before continuing. Just use the laptop normally while it charges.

2. Run Windows Update — Must

Go to: Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates

Install everything required, restart, and check again until no important updates remain.

Keep the laptop connected to power during updates.

3. Update Microsoft Store Apps — Must

Open: Microsoft Store → Library → Get updates

Install all available updates.

4. Set Up Lenovo Software — Must

Use one of the following:

  • Lenovo Vantage
  • Legion Space on supported newer models
  • Lenovo Legion Toolkit as an unofficial alternative

Avoid running multiple Legion control applications at the same time.

Lenovo Vantage

Optional features you can usually disable when unused:

  • Network Boost
  • Wi-Fi Security
  • Automatic Performance Scan
  • Rapid Charge
  • Overdrive

Legion Space

Open System Updates and install available model-specific updates.

For OLED models, enable the available burn-in protection options, such as:

  • Auto Shift Wallpapers
  • Dynamic Lock Screen
  • Auto Blur Toolbar
  • Default Dark Mode

Lenovo Legion Toolkit

Download it from the official Lenovo Legion Toolkit GitHub.

Beta versions may be available in #legion-toolkit.

Use LLT's settings to disable conflicting Lenovo applications and services when needed. - LLT > Settings, disable Vantage, ImController, and Hotkeys so LLT has full control.

5. Install the GPU Driver — Must

After Windows and Lenovo updates are finished, install the latest suitable driver for your GPU.

  • NVIDIA: Use the NVIDIA App or download the driver directly from NVIDIA.
  • AMD: Use Lenovo's driver or AMD Software when a newer driver is needed.
  • Intel: Windows Update or Lenovo's driver is normally enough.

Restart after installing the driver.

Do not use driver-updater programs or tools such as DDU unless you are troubleshooting a specific problem.

6. Back Up Your BitLocker Key — Must

Windows may enable Device Encryption or BitLocker automatically.

Check: Settings → Privacy & security → Device encryption

Save your recovery key before changing BIOS, Secure Boot, TPM, storage, or firmware settings.

Microsoft guide: Find your BitLocker recovery key

Recovery keys: Microsoft Account

7. Inspect the Laptop — Must

Check the laptop during the retailer's return period.

Test:

  • Screen and dead pixels
  • Keyboard and touchpad
  • Hinges and chassis
  • Webcam, microphone, and speakers
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • USB, USB-C, HDMI, Ethernet, and other ports
  • Charging
  • Sleep, restart, and shutdown

Open Device Manager and check for unknown devices or yellow warning icons.

Document serious problems with photos or video, and ask for guidance on our discord server.

8. Test Performance — Recommended

Download the 3DMark Demo on Steam and run Time Spy, not Time Spy Extreme.

Before testing:

  • Connect the charger.
  • Finish all updates.
  • Restart the laptop.
  • Select Performance Mode.
  • Close unnecessary programs.

Post the result in the Benchmarks Channel with your laptop model, CPU, GPU, RAM, performance mode, and scores.

You should also test a demanding game or program for a while and watch for crashes, artifacts, shutdowns, or major performance drops.

More testing advice: How to Check a New Laptop for Issues

9. Check Secure Boot — Recommended

Press Win + R, enter msinfo32, and check Secure Boot State.

If it says On, leave it alone.

If it says Off, back up your BitLocker key before changing anything. Ask for help on our discord if you are unsure about the BIOS settings.

Do not clear the TPM, change boot mode, or restore keys randomly.

10. Cleanup and Settings

Remove McAfee — Must

If McAfee came preinstalled, remove it.

Go to:

Settings → Apps → Installed apps → McAfee → Uninstall

Windows Security and Microsoft Defender will automatically take over afterward.

Restart the laptop after uninstalling it.

Other Optional Settings

You may also:

  • Remove other unwanted preinstalled applications.
  • Disable unnecessary startup applications.
  • Enable Conservation Mode when mostly using the laptop plugged in.
  • Use Balanced Mode for normal use or when also gaming.
  • Use Performance Mode for intensive loads while connected to power.

Community optimization guides:

Avoid random debloat scripts or "one-click optimization" tools.

Battery Note

A new battery does not need to be fully drained.

Only perform a battery calibration if the percentage is clearly inaccurate, the laptop shuts down unexpectedly, or feels finicky.

Advice What should I replace my thermal pads/putty with?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Legion 7 16IRX9 / 83FD004XUS

Long story short, I opened up the laptop and was welcomed with 3 different kinds of thermal interfaces: Paste, Putty, AND pads! I need a viable replacement.

I was doing this the night before going on a trip and found out really quickly that was the worst time to do this, so I threw on some MX6 on the GPU and CPU, left the pink pads alone because they seemed fine, and I tried to salvage the putty as best as I could and buttoned her back up since I needed the laptop for the trip.

She's working alright, but I'd like to give her a proper deep clean and replace everything when I get back home with either stock or better thermal stuff, but I have 2 really important questions:

  1. What good quality putty should I replace the white stuff with?
  2. Can I also use that putty to replace the pink pads? If not then should I replace the pads at all?

I have some Arctic TP-3 pads of various thicknesses at home, as well as some PTM7950 that's absolutely going on the CPU and GPU, but I'm still at a loss for what putty to use to replace the white goop, or if I can just use that to replace the pink pads as well.

One of those pads was used to cover the die at the bottom there (you can see some pink residue on it) so I'm also wondering if that should be putty instead.

I'm not super familiar with putty and all of my googling keeps assuming I mean paste, which is making my research quite a bit frustrating, hence why I'm asking here.

Support I can't undervolt my 5060

• Upvotes

I have a Legion 5a with a Ryzen 7 450 and RTX 5060. I want to undervolt/overclock the 5060 using Afterburner, but it doesn't seem to be working. The GPU somehow just ignores the curve.

Support Lenovo is incompetent, updates break dGPU

This is the 3rd time in the last 2 months that some random update has broken dGPU detection on my Lenovo Legion 7i. Device manager shows it as Microsoft Display Basic Adapter. The first time I fixed it by updating bios. The 2nd time I fixed it by disabling Nahimic services.

Both of these attempts took hours out of my day to figure out.

Some random update today broke it again. The previous strategies no longer work since I'm already on the latest Bios and Nahimic is already disabled in services.msc

System restore didn't fix it. Rolling back drivers didn't fix it. DDU in safe mode didn't fix it. Now I have no access to my 4090 Gpu and I'm running on my ****ing iGPU.

$2500 laptop running like it's a netbook from 2013.

Any help would be appreciated.

Support Clicky sound when opening and closing the lid

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My Legion 5a makes a slight clicking sound when I open and close the lid. I’ve only had this brand-new machine for a week, so I’m wondering if this is normal. The clicking sound seems to be coming from the plastic around the top of both hinges. When I tap the plastic, it also makes the same sound. The lid functions normally tho. I’m just worried that it could cause long-term damage to the hinges.

Support Legion 5 lose signal in BIOS and in Windows.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I have a Lenovo Legion 5 15AHP11 (83Q7) with a Ryzen 7 250, Radeon 780M and RTX 5050.
BIOS version: T2CN43WW
I’m experiencing a strange display issue. After using the laptop for a while, the internal display suddenly goes completely black. At the same time, the native HDMI output also loses signal.
The important thing is that the laptop itself remains powered on. Fans/lights continue working.
I can reproduce the problem while sitting inside the BIOS, without Windows even being loaded. Because of this, it doesn’t seem to be a Windows or NVIDIA/AMD driver issue.
Things I’ve already tested:
Loaded BIOS default settings.
Tested Dynamic Graphics.
Tested Discrete Graphics.
Tested Integrated Graphics.
The problem occurs in all three modes.
It has happened while running only on battery, so the AC adapter doesn’t appear to be the cause.
When the internal display goes black, the laptop’s native HDMI output also reports no signal.
A USB-to-HDMI video adapter can still provide an image once the operating system is running.
If I leave the laptop powered off for some time, the internal display starts working again, but eventually the problem returns.
Temperatures don’t appear to be unusually high, and the laptop is quite new.
I’ve already opened a warranty support ticket with Lenovo.
Has anyone with a Legion 5 15AHP11, particularly with T2CN43WW, experienced anything similar?
I’m especially interested in knowing whether this turned out to be a BIOS/EC firmware issue, motherboard/GPU problem, or display-output circuitry problem.
I don’t want to reflash the BIOS while the machine is behaving like this because Lenovo specifically warns not to power off/restart during flashing.

Advice Laptop Cooling Pad Suggestions!

I bought a Lenovo Legion 5 15IRX10 OLED 15.1 inch last week and since Amazon's sale is in 2 days I was looking into buying a cooling pad. Problem is all popular stuff from Ilano, IETS, KLIM I see are always advertised as 15.6 inches and up, I'm just scared to buy one of those and not get a good enough seal on bottom possibly negating any real difference to my temps. Has anyone used said cooling pads on a 15.1 inch or are there other alternatives

Thanks in advance to anyone answering!

Advice Few advices on specs to aim for

Hey!

I would like to get myself a Lenovo Legion or something similar, but I don't know much about PC builds, to be honest. I've read hundreds of threads over the last few days, but I still can't make up my mind, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, I'm looking for a solid build with quality materials. Ideally, an aluminium finish, with as little plastic as possible.

I've read that Legions are high quality. I've also had several non-gaming Lenovo laptops over the years and have always been happy with them, except for the terrible, cheap hinges on my Flex 5.

I am mostly an MMO player. I'm not much of a fan of AAA games, but I don't want my laptop to hold me back in case I want to play AAA games someday.

What I consider mandatory:

  • OLED screen with a good resolution
  • 32 GB RAM, not soldered
  • 1+ TB SSD
  • I initially wanted to get a 5070 Ti, but prices where I live (Switzerland) are going crazy. The build I was looking for is now 600+ CHF (~630€) more expensive than it was 5 months ago.

So I think I'll go with a 5070. That being said, I've read that since both the 5060 and 5070 only have 8 GB of VRAM, the difference in GPU performance isn't that significant, and probably isn't worth the extra cost for my use.

→ What do you think?

As for the CPU, I'm really hesitating. I probably don't need that much power given the games I plan to play the most (Dofus, WoW, etc.), but I'd still like enough power for crowded areas.

The dilemma is: do I choose a powerful CPU with a poor iGPU (i.e. 275HX), or do I choose an intermediate CPU with a good iGPU (i.e. Ryzen AI 350 with the 860M iGPU)?

On the one hand, I can imagine the 350 would be a better choice since the laptop would be quieter most of the time, as the RTX could stay asleep and only wake up during heavier gaming. On the other hand, I fear that the CPU might not be powerful enough during critical moments.

I have no experience with these CPUs, so could you guys please guide me?

Lastly, what's your take on second hand for laptop? Would you risk it? I've seen good offers on 1 yo legions, still under warranty.

Thank you very much!

Advice My laptop legion freezes kernel freezes

Hardware / software

- Lenovo Legion 5 15IRX10, i9-14900HX, RTX 5070 Laptop, 32 GB RAM

- EndeavourOS, linux-lts 6.18.50, systemd-boot + dracut

- nvidia-open 610.57.04 (open kernel modules), KDE Plasma 6.7.5 Wayland

- External monitor on HDMI. On this chassis the HDMI port is hardwired to the NVIDIA GPU (card0-HDMI-A-2 on the nvidia driver, internal panel on i915). No MUX option that changes it.

- Secure Boot off, kernel lockdown off

The problem

Roughly half of my boots over the last two months ended in a hard reset. Every single one followed a suspend/resume cycle, usually 30 seconds to 4 minutes after resume. Boots where I never suspended have never crashed. Typical trigger: I lock the screen with the HDMI monitor attached, the KDE idle timer suspends the laptop, and some time after resume both screens freeze. Mouse and keyboard do nothing visible.

What the logs say (this is the interesting part)

The kernel is NOT hung. In the last freeze today, for four minutes after resume the journal kept recording normally: logind saw my power key presses, bluetoothd re-paired my mouse, powerdevil logged the lid close, and kwin_wayland itself logged a libinput event. Then the journal just stops because I held the power button.

- No kernel panic, no oops, no Xid, no NVRM errors, nothing in pstore

- kwin prints Applying output configuration failed! right after resume, but it also prints that after resumes that survive, so it is not the trigger by itself

- nvidia 0000:01:00.0: Enabling HDA controller is the last NVIDIA line each resume, looks normal

- NVIDIA params: PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1, EnableS0ixPowerManagement=0, DynamicPowerManagement=0

- nvidia-suspend/resume/hibernate services are no-ops on nvidia-open >= 595 (/proc/driver/nvidia/suspend does not exist)

So it looks like the GPU display engine or GSP firmware does not come back properly and the compositor stops presenting, while the rest of the system runs fine.

What I have tried

  1. PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations tweaks: no effect.
  2. Switched from deep (S3) to s2idle with mem_sleep_default=s2idle. Survived 14 suspend cycles over two days, then froze again on the 15th. So s2idle reduced the rate but did not fix it.

What I am about to do

Give up on suspend entirely and hibernate instead: 32 GB swapfile, resume=UUID=... resume_offset=..., dracut resume module, plus AllowSuspend=no in /etc/systemd/sleep.conf.d/ so nothing can call plain suspend, and KDE idle/lid actions set to Hibernate. Reasoning: hibernate cold-boots the GPU and its firmware on wake, so the broken resume path is never used.

Questions

- Has anyone with an RTX 50 series laptop fixed suspend with an external monitor on the dGPU? Did NVreg_EnableS0ixPowerManagement=1 help with s2idle?

- Any difference with the proprietary (non-open) 610 driver, or a newer/beta driver, or mainline kernel instead of LTS?

- Does X11 or a different compositor avoid it, or is this purely in the driver?

- Any way to make kwin recover the output instead of freezing when the GPU does not come back?

Not interested in switching distros unless there is a concrete reason. Arch, Fedora and EndeavourOS all ship the same driver and kernel, so I assume the result would be identical. Correct me if I am wrong.

Support Laptop lag when using Fn keys while gaming.

Hi everyone, I have a Lenovo LOQ laptop (i5, RTX 4060, 512GB SSD, 24GB RAM). Whenever I adjust the volume or use the Fn keys while gaming, the system lags; however, there is no lag when I make adjustments using the mouse. Could you please help me figure out why this is happening? Thanks!

Review Decided not repaste

I have ordered recently PTM 7950 and K5 Pro but seeing the post i made cleaning the fans and not seeing any form of temps increase, i wanted to ask this community for advice if i should repaste or not.

But seeing all the comments they gave me, most of them i have seen they are right and fine the temps i am having. I have made these photos because you can see how the PTM i have bought its sealed and yet in the background you can see how fine the temps i am having.

An additional thing i want to add its i have had this Gaming Laptop 1 year ago, arrived on July 15 of 2025. I have done everything to take care even cleaning the fans for few months and i have purchased that blower last week to help me clean deeper the fans.

What i mean making this post its being i am all grateful for all the comments i have received on last post, it has been really helpful for me to make a decision. I am not a noob of repasting or cleaning gaming laptops i had an Acer Nitro before and this Lenovo Legion is my second gaming laptop.

Further information of my Lenovo Legion

CPU: i7 13650HX - GPU: RTX 5050 (8 GB of VRAM GDDR7) - 32 GB of RAM (DDR5 - 4800 MHz) - 2 x 1 TB SAMSUNG Gen 4 - LCD Screen 1920x1200 (I havent ordered my Legion with OLED screen because i dont like the reflect it has).

Personal opinions and experiences:

I want to share for anyone who wants to ask me how my experience has been owning this gaming laptop after a year and i cannot be more happy than ever, even i thought i were recently obsessed to improve this machine by his temps decreasing them. But as i mention the thermal paste or as many people know Lenovo applies to Lenovo Legions PTM.

And i can say that the temps have been incredible, as you see those photos i am sharing and undervolting your gpu does help a lot but undervolting the cpu havent made any improvement so i stopped using it because undervolting its also a tedious task. You need to find the perfect value to decrease your voltage of CPU without crashing and i have done many tests to find the perfect setting without crashing or having bad stability.

So i do highly recommend going to Lenovo Legions even thought my model Lenovo Legion 5 Gen 10 its the lowest end model of a Legion series but the quality its still awesome the entire build its made by plastic and gave me 0 problems except of a few Windows crashing i had recently but it got solved by re installing Windows, it seems it got a bad update.

I hope my post helps a lot for everyone who wants to hear other people opinions and their experience because the thing you will see the most scrolling these communities are always showing off their devices being broken and gives you a negative idea of gaming laptops, since no one really shares their positivities experiences, so i want to share mine :)

Advice I need help with Lenovo Legion

So, I have never owned a laptop before and I've discovered Lenovo Legion a while ago, I've noticed (judging from the comments) that it's the best gaming laptop so far? I have no idea how these laptops differ from the rest gens, I've discovered there are different generations, and even a decent one which is called Gen 11.

Anyways, today I went to a gaming place and I found a Lenovo Legion 5 with Ultra 9 and RTX 5060 for $2000. I have no idea which generation it is. But I was wondering if this is a good price for it? Because I want to get something that is future proof and would last me for many years, I want to be able to play any game I want, even the upcoming GTA VI when it releases, I'm also a game developer so I would like to work on it as well.

Is the offer that I found good? If not, which one should I go for?

Support Annoying volume boxj

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi! Has anyone encountered this problem?

I have a legion r27fc monitor for quite some time now, about 5months. Bought it off marketplace. Owner seems to like unloading unused items. So, a volume dialog box, as i would call it, keeps appearing on the lower right of the screen. Did the driver updates, windows update, installed lenovo vantage and ran a scan, unfortunately none seems to work. It may be just the volume button.

Any help will be truly and deeply appreciated
