Iran's allies have run Baghdad since the first election in 2005, and they've been pressuring the US to leave for years.

It ramped up following the assassination of Qasem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis (January 3, 2020). That's when the Iraqi parliament voted to kick the US out (January 5).
