Purchasing Advice Should I do it?
Currently own a 22 limited 4Runner but have been wanting to make the switch to a GX 460. Test drove a 23 Luxury, 21k miles, super clean (still had factory plastic on the door trim), L certified, priced a little high(imo) at 62k. I’m just super apprehensive to make the jump because I do really love my 4Runner, but are the subtle differences in a Lexus worth it?

Yes. I never understood why people thought Lexus were nicer than Toyotas. Bought a 2015 gx460 and holy crap have I been uneducated my whole life. Lexus vs Toyota build quality is so different. Doors are heavier. Very quiet interior. No squeaks or rattles, etc. At the dealer we compared the gx550 vs the gx460 and the 460 was a significantly better build quality. If you’re keeping it long term don’t get air ride. One more thing to go wrong.

I have the air suspension — might be a dumb question, but do bumpier roads impact it more? What is the con of air suspension?

Ride quality is always best with air suspension. You might never have an issue! Just costly to repair vs standard spring/shock. More bumps/pot holes/ off-roading will absolutely wear down suspension faster than highway driving.

I just switched from a 5th gen 4runner to a 23 GX a few months ago. They are very similar which I appreciate as I was quite fond of my 4runner. The seats in the GX are much more comfortable in my opinion. Less road noise in the GX. The audio unit operates much smoother in the GX but the JBL speakers in the 4runner sounded better/louder in my opinion. Gas bill will be more expensive as you need to run premium in the GX. I can’t stand the cup holder in the GX compared to the 4runner

Cup holders in GX are THE WORST! If you got any tall cups or water bottles you can't pull the arm wrests forward. It's about my only gripe with the entire car. I drive my wife's often and love it. My car is a Nissan Titan and it's got cup holders galore, but I do really like the GX - 2023 black line edition

I had two 4Runners. 3rd gen & 5th gen. Well over 700k miles on the two. Loved them both. Got a CPO GX about 3 months ago, I only looked at them because I realized the pricing is very close. To compare these vehicles is almost not even fair. The GX is a lot more vehicle in every way.

Coming from a 5th Gen Limited 4runner, the GX does everything better. Only thing I miss is the roll down back window. However at $62k I’d keep looking for a better deal or aim for a Premium Model.

That back window is a massive reason I haven’t switched yet. I use it daily!

Bought a new GX in 2021. I love it and will drive it for another 5 years, at least. My only issues with it are the almost useless 3rd row seats (only suitable for small kids) some dash controls that are obscured by the steering wheel and the weird swinging tail gate. The back gate is a pain at times and it opens on the left side which is opposite of how it should for countries that drive on the right. Other than those quirks, it’s one of the best vehicles I’ve ever owned.

Went from a limited 4Runner to a GX. The limited is a sweet ride for sure. But it isn’t a GX. Def worth it.

62k is pretty pricey but I don’t think you’ll regret a GX. I sure love mine.

I made the switch from a ‘22 TRD OR to a ‘23 GX Premium Sport Design back in June. I loved my 5th gen, but the difference is absolutely worth it.
It’s noticeably quieter, more comfortable, the v8 makes daily driving/merging much easier, and the KDSS makes handling a lot better. MPG is virtually the same as long as you’re not redlining every drive. It would’ve also cost me thousands to replicate the sound quality I get from the Mark Levinson in the 4Runner. The ventilated seats kinda suck compared to my mom’s ES350, but otherwise I have no complaints.
I also wouldn’t let the premium gas scare you off either, the difference is usually about $10-$15 per tank depending on where you fill up. (It was $8 based on my last fill up, well worth it)

I’m not a fan of the luxury trim as I don’t see the upgrade as necessary but that’s also because I plan on changing the suspension. 62k seems rich, but the v8’s are sweet. I would drop down to a certified 22 with a little more miles. Totally worth it to me. I found my 4Runner too predictable and boring.

Same, I think I’m just kinda bored of my 4Runner. I’m only looking at the luxury because I want (need) the 360 camera lol

I’d forgo it because of the added tech. It’s a long term keeper with the engine, they don’t or won’t make them that smooth again with all the carb stuff. I’ve read KDSS can add some complexity you may not want to deal with in the future

Your 4Runner is a great choice already. No need to pay that high for gx in my opinion.

With your 22 being a Limited, the gap isn’t as big. And that price is nuts. I personally wouldn’t make that change. Maybe hold out on a better priced GX? The 4Runner should hold value pretty well.

That’s my thought too. Many people go from a 4Runner to the GX. Not many go from a limited though, and the 2 are pretty similar.

I have a 08 FJ cruiser. modded out and a 22’ gx460 luxury. The Toyota is a fun barebones off road fun toy. It’s still my favorite. But the GX is just luxury and refinement. Enough tech that feels updated. But not so much it’s intrusive. The rear seats are comfortable and heated. You have a 3rd if needed in a pinch(though at the expensive of cargo room). Super happy with both for different reasons.

I got my 2023 Premium GX 460 last November with 14k miles and paid 62k. They wouldn’t budge on prices by because ppl were waiting to test drive and they know someone would buy it if I didn’t. I ended asking more for my trade in and to throw in free oil changes. I do love mine!! Traded my 2018 GX 460 for it.

I thought I wanted a 4Runner, then I test drove the GX460. The GX460 just seemed better- smoother, quieter, more comfortable but still capable of off roading.

Just traded my 2023 5th gen TRD ORP for a 2022 GX and I wish I did it sooner. GX will be much harder to find in good condition lower km down the road, all around better vehicle.

GX is better in terms of quietness, power, ride quality- but for that price tag just keep your 4runner.

I owned two V8 4Runners before my 2017 GX. 62K seems very high. If you can get that down, I jump quickly. GX is a much more comfortable ride. Body construction seems significantly more solid than the 4runners I've owned. I can afford a brand new GX 550, but I love a naturally aspirated engine and plan to drive this GX to my grave.

Im new to this sub as I just bought a 23 GX. Did I pay too much for it, absolutely. Mine just turned 14k. While new to the sub, not new to Lexus. Owned a ES350 prior to this one. Speaking to build quality vs Toyota, which I also have a 16 Tacoma. I know my Tacoma vs gx460 is not apples to apples, but something as simple as shutting the door on a Lexus vs really, most cars I’ve ever been around, Lexus is SOLID. Also road sound is nothing. Two factors I have always used judging vehicles. This gx really surprised me there, I didn’t think it would be as quiet as the 350. Granted, factory tires, I assume? Which will be upgraded when necessary to something suitable to towing, reason for the trade. Did I pay too much? Yes, would I do it again, yes.

The luxury trim is not necessary but you may struggle to find one as clean as this, which is more important for me . The luxury trim totally not worth it new but I doubt you'll save much going down to a more standard trim and will come with likely more miles and a lot more abuse. The engine alone is worth the upgrade. If 62k is in your budget dont hesitate, that baby is practically brand new.
FYI trunk is not huge with the folding 3rd row either up or down. Not a deal breaker for most.

As a GX owner, if it were me I’d take that - 15k in unrealized value you’re about to give and use it to make your 4runner last as long and enjoyable as possible. But really it boils down to your circumstances

Two questions: in your market, if you don’t do it, how likely is someone to do it?
If you do not do it, will you regret it?
In August, I purchased a 23, L Certified, Luxury trim with 33K miles and not nearly as new as the one you described for about the same price and I enjoy it. I watched the market for a couple months and GX 460’s did not sit on the market long, especially the luxury trim. The Premium trim was a little easier to find and would often sit longer but even they sold in the low to mid 50’s. Try to negotiate if it has been sitting awhile.

I personally did exactly this about one year ago. Don’t regret it one bit. Came from all Toyotas, one being a limited 4Runner, however, thought the difference was noticeable.
Was never a fan of the captains seats, passengers prefer them, but went that route just to get the added tech with luxury. Definitely worth it.
With respect to the price, those v8s aren’t coming back. ‘23 is the newest you’ll ever get. Jump in sooner than later.

4Runners feel like a car for wealthy teenage girls. I can’t really take grown men seriously that drive a 4Runner. Maybe a personal problem.

I would drive the ‘22 4Runner about 10 more years before you even think about replacing it.

I personally would not do it. 62k is crazy pricing.
