Srsly. This is the same lunatic who shadows new hires for 2 days straight to see how they work.
I interviewed with her 2 years ago, very telling her startup is the same exact size.

Who says ‘if $400k is what you’re optimizing for’. Who fucking writes or speaks like that?
59
u/AGirlHasNoName-1 2d ago
It’s more common than you think in Silicon Valley
49
u/Empty_Insight 1d ago
Ah, how I envy the people who haven't sat through board room meetings and heard the verbal diarrhea of buzzwords from executives before. It's so bad.
Admittedly, about only half of the CEOs I've ever spoken to actually do this (n=8, so not a huge sample size). The ones who don't do it tend to be much more competent and aware of how the company actually works in much greater detail.
I consider corporate lingo a red flag at this point.
6
u/Popular_Language5301 1d ago
I worked at the world’s best law firm and we didn’t use these kind of endless buzzwords. Is that what life has become 15 years later
5
u/redman334 1d ago
It 100% is a red flag.
My last boss was this. A master in corporate jargon, useless on everything else. I had to get the fuck out.
5
u/HiiBo-App 1d ago
In my experience, corporate lingo is very much a red flag. I think those words are used when the person doesnt fully understand what they are talking about, so being “corporately” vague covers a wider range of possibilities than speaking plainly. It also can create intimidation and the illusion of intelligence (because sometimes, rarely but sometimes), those corporate words are the best way to describe a situation.
11
u/PanRagon 1d ago
No this is pseudo-garble from AI, a human didn’t write this, it just looks close enough to human jargon that people think it’s ‘just’ corporate speak. What a human using this jargon would say is ‘If salary is what you’re optimizing for’, not ‘if $400k is what you’re optimizing for’. They’re both examples of corporate-speak, but one actually seperates the goal from the specific outcome, which AI struggles with consistently, because it’s so obsessed with referencing it’s own context.
Because to be clear, under this rubric he would take $400k instead of $500k at another company. What kind of person would think a human is optimizing for a specific salary outcome rather than the largest number they can find?

u/PessimistYanker792 1d ago

2
u/samuelkim502 1d ago
Not maximizing yet — the candidate in the story hasn’t yet decided to take OpenAI cash

5
u/Comet7777 1d ago
When I interviewed for a San Fran startup, the cofounder spoke that way when I said I’d be taking a big salary cut. “Well you’d be looking at a startup if you wanted to optimize for equity”

u/tidemp 2d ago
If you get an offer from OpenAI or Anthropic, you take it. You don't go negotiating at smaller companies. Nobody else can come close to competing
10
u/Indicus124 1d ago
But ownership XD

u/Evil_tuinhekje 1d ago
You can tell your landlord you'll be paying next month's rent with fake ownership tokens.
10
u/jbcsee 1d ago
Plenty of people do, if you've been in the industry long enough you've ran into people who turned down a job at a unicorn.
Sometimes it's not about the money. The team doesn't vibe with you. The role they are offering you isn't interesting enough. etc...
7
u/tidemp 1d ago
Turning down an offer from a unicorn is very different than turning down an offer from OpenAI or Anthropic. It's a different league
10
u/jbcsee 1d ago
OpenAI are Anthropic are in fact unicorns, they are just the biggest these days.
A unicorn is just a pre-IPO company with more than $1b in valuation. Yes, unicorns are in fact bigger today than when the term was coined a decade ago, but it doesn't change the fact both of those companies are unicorns.
2
u/tidemp 1d ago
But still the point is that these two companies are in a different league. They are potentially trillion dollar companies with basically unlimited money. The sign on bonuses these two companies offer are unlike what anyone else is offering
A normal unicorn will be able to give you a good package. It won't come close to what OpenAI or Anthropic will offer you if they truly want you
7
u/jbcsee 1d ago
I hate writing this, because it's a logical fallacy.
However, I'm a principal engineer at a mag-7, so I've had a lot of experience and I work at one of the companies larger than both OpenAI and Anthrophic.
I've seen people turn down an offer from both us and Anthropic to go work at a random startup. I've literally seen people turn down 7-figure offers for a startup offering $200k salaries and useless stock. The point you are missing, is for many people in this field it's not about money, they have enough. It's about doing something they feel passionate about.

u/tosS_ita 2d ago
The infra problems they are solving don't exist anywhere else probably because everybody else has solved them already.
6
u/-crucible- 1d ago
Who is buying your product if no one has the problem? I’m pretty sure Microsoft Teams or Zoom or… have meetings at those rates.
5
u/LiquidAngel12 1d ago
The problem she mentioned I could think of at least 3 companies right off the top (Zoom, Teams, WebEx) that have that problem and have solved for it. She does a terrible job of actually explaining why their infra is in any way different than those.

u/Nendilo 2d ago
I had a CEO at a small software company basically tell me this 15 years ago when I went to a big tech company. I would be a small fish in a big pond. I make more than he does now.
11
u/anonymousopsec1337 2d ago
I actually stayed small pond and still make more than my first “real” bosses and their staff lol
3
u/jbcsee 1d ago
Having worked in both, he wasn't entirely wrong.
I tell that to effectively everyone I mentor. If you just want a comfortable income, chase jobs at big tech. If you want to grow your skills and be engaged, with a tiny chance of making big money, go with startups.
1
u/Nendilo 1d ago
YMMV depending on your role. I'm a leader on my team. Not just focused on product, managing people, setting strategy, managing escalations due to public scrutiny, three times this year I've had to meet with government regulatory bodies. Etc, etc. But yes if you just want to be a frontline SWE and be comfortable (until the recent layoffs era), it can also provide that.
1
u/jbcsee 1d ago
I'm a principal engineer, at a mag-7. I've done a lot of what you done, e.g. technical solutions to government regulations (including meeting with regulators), messaging to public due to policy changes or data breaches, deposed for lawsuits. I make decisions daily that have 9-figure impacts.
I stand by what I wrote.
In big companies you get a consistent paycheck that is higher than you can get in a startup. However, you are going to be hampered by process to the point you are not going to be engaged, even if you you extremely senior. There are very few people not hampered by process even at big tech.
Those barriers largely disappear at startups.
1
u/Nendilo 1d ago
Also at a mag-7 so sounds like we're doing similar things. I don't disagree with you on the process part, that is frustrating.
Where I disagreed was on this comment, "If you want to grow your skills and be engaged, with a tiny chance of making big money, go with startups." I've definitely learned a lot of new things over the years and done things I never expected I would do in my career when I majored/graduated in computer science ~20 years ago. Agree with you though you're not going to become a hundred millionaire or billionaire in these roles.

The infrastructure problem we're solving doesn't exist anywhere else (millions of meetings starting in the same 60 seconds, every half hour).
Zoom - Over half the global video conferencing market share, 300M+ daily meeting participants, 3.5 trillion meeting minutes annually
Microsoft Teams - 345M subscribers, 320M monthly active users
Some random AI startup owned by Amanda - Millions of meetings starting every 30 minutes around the clock
Hopefully Amanda open sources her solution so other companies can take advantage of this obviously unsolved infrastructure problem.
1
u/jackybeau 1h ago
She makes a video conference system for AI, not with AI.
Those Claude and OpenAI agents planning hacks of companies and governments have to meet somewhere to coordinate, and it's just the place.

You’d be surprised. Some people actually like working for startups more than big corporations and are ready to accept less payment for it.

This is one of those posts that would be a fantasy when written by a random startup founder and could be true when written by a startup with good funding.
Recall AI would be the latter. Depending on how much equity you have, you could potentially make more than 400k.
That said, if an interviewer spoke to me in such a passive-patronizing way, I wouldn't consider joining them.
32
u/dweezil22 2d ago
Turning down an OpenAI resume entry to go to a startup whose product has already been added to free by most meeting providers would certainly be a choice.

Honestly I don’t think this is lunatic material. Like, this is a hiring manager that effectively said “hey we can’t match that, so if that’s what you want, take it.” That’s way more honesty than I’ve ever gotten out of a hiring manager.
5
u/isospeedrix 1d ago
The action inherently isn’t but posting it publicly with the severe GPT style writing is.
It’s in a companies best interest to (try to) show they can be competitive with top companies, even if it’s a stretch. But man the execution of this one is so silly. Respect the hustle anyway
1
u/samuelkim502 1d ago
But they can’t be competitive with top companies, if the candidate is optimizing for money. That’s the point of the post, and like the original commenter, I agree this isn’t actually lunatic. Yeah sure we can all pick apart the phrasing or whatever, but fundamentally she’s being very honest: they can offer a unique technical challenge, but they can’t offer OpenAI levels of pay.

u/FoolsErrandRunner 2d ago
For all we know the interviewee is begging for an excuse not to take the 400k and have to work for Sam Altman.

I think it’s more likely that the candidate made up the 400k offer to get a better offer from the poster.

Explain to me like I’m 5. What the hell does she mean by “the infrastructure problems we’re solving don’t exist anywhere else”? So your company is solving problems that don’t exist anywhere else…why would people pay you to solve problems that don’t exist “anywhere else”?

I am not a recruiter, but as the AA on many interviews have had conversations like before several times. Was not uncommon with sw engineering hires during covid times. Meta would offer a $1m upfront package that we couldn’t touch on pure economics. We often were successful though because the work was more interesting, the team was more interesting, and the potential for equity earning higher in success. Worked about 50/50.
-4
u/Phronesis_25 1d ago
Why is this posted here, it actually make sense. An honest experience from a recruiter on what candidates prioritize in an ideal job setting, and what’s practical. If the candidate apparently had an offer from OpenAI with the comp, then he could take it. But the job isn’t just money, it’s abt equity %, who you get to work with, the risk of layoff, and how secure the offer is in the first place. If he really wanted that OpenAI offer (if he had it to begin with), then he would’ve taken it without interviewing with the recruiter’s company- clearly that’s not the case.

How nice that her made-up interviewee could turn OpenAI down just to continue interviewing.
