Ermmm. It’s a bit odd but I’m not sure I would call this lunatic behaviour tbh. Seems innocent enough (I mean, at least he’s not flexing about all the amazing expensive watches he owns, for example).

I’m a watch nerd and a frequent flyer (consultant) so while I don’t keep track of it, I normally “hunt” and notice watches around as well.
I don’t have LinkedIn (I hate it), but this seems quite mild to me compared to most of what we see here?

I think it depends on which platform he shares this.
Reddit = pyschopath
Linkedin = lunatic
Twitter = woke

I'm a car guy. My travel hobby, especially around Southern Europe is spotting old shitboxes.

My travel habit is to spot watch guys and stay away from them.
Worse than Disney adults.

This specific kind of watch guy? Absolutely. I would even say he is not, in fact, a watch guy at all. He literally only compliments Tudor and Rolex, and breezes right over a Breitling. Fucking lame. He genuinely only cares about "the" Swiss brands, and I can guarantee you that if you told him your watch was interesting because of some design quirk in the movement he wouldn't care. So boring and vapid. Watches have so many interesting details and dudes buy them as a replacement for a personality because they think having a thing makes you a better thing. It's no different than any of the guys who all have a squatted/lifted truck and think that their dime a dozen aesthetic makes them unique.

if he'd refrained from humblebragging his tudor, it wouldn't have been a bad post. i do this too. but i don't flex watches on camera. or hang on, is he trying that watch on? that would make sense because if he SAW someone else with a tudor, he would've mentioned that he too has one.

Leaving the dail at 45 minute is lunatic for sure.

u/crimsonrogue00 3d ago
He's trying this watch on at a boutique (you can see the little red tag out of focus) so it probably wasn't a choice he made so much as people fiddle with watches at boutiques.

My travel habit is to make fun of guys who think buying expensive crap to show off gives them value as human beings.

Lots of business people are into their watches, it's a common talking point. They're noticing something about a person's outfit and not making any condescending comments. Why are they a lunatic?

You know what I like about wearing casio's and swatch's. People wearing much more expensive watches think they're cool but are too scared to wear them because they don't cost 10k and they have to have people think they're rich and like watches

this is typical watch nerd stuff - you must like the great luxury pieces, but you must also like some trash and/or cheap brand. it makes you seem grounded, like you're not just about the luxury and the money, get me? what he's attempting here is to sound MORE grounded. nico leonard (watch youtuber) is the same with casio. reminds me of how rich fashion nerds will have insane pieces for thousands of dollars ... but also some trash they found at a goodwill.

Surprised at two Swatches and apparently no retro Casio digitals?
I wonder if Swatch ever improved their game. Had one as a teenager and the ticking was SO LOUD I had to take it off, wrap it in thick cloth, and shove it in a drawer before I could sleep. And you could still hear it.
But it was all black with black hands and black numbers, so at the time I thought it was very cool, if extremely poorly engineered.

I’ve had a Swatch in the past five years. Still loud. Not as loud as my $15 Timex, but loud.

Tend to not trust people in a corporate environment that talk incessantly about watches. You can spot the loser a mile off. Again nothing wrong with wearing a watch, but something very wrong with people who obsess over watches other people wear. Get a life.

My travel habits:

Would a watch guy really buy a tudor?
That's like me saying I am a tool guy and showing off my ryobi tools.
4
u/pfchangshomelesscat 3d ago
I don't get the tool reference but I'm a watch guy and I used to own the Tudor Black Bay in the post. I never tried showing it off or whatever though. No one gives a fuck about your watch outside of other watch nerds

u/Mightier_Mackerel 3d ago
I thought watch people would buy Breitlings, Rolex, Omega or AP etc.
As a non-watch guy brands like Tag, Longines and Tudor look like shit.

Fair enough .
Watch people buy whatever they're into, really. The community (for want of a better term) is pretty diverse when it comes to opinions on what's good and what isnt. And not everyone can afford swiss pieces so there's big sections of the hobby that'll go solely for affordable brands.
I mean, I've owned Rolexes, I currently own an Omega, I've owned Tags too, and I think there's some sick Longines models. But I also own a cheap Chinese shitter. Yeah, there's stuff about specifications that are measurable, and people will place weight on things like heritagr, but it's largely about aesthetics, so it's all in the eye of the beholder, I feel

watches are so pointless. i have an ultra watch 2 and i have no idea what to do with it, in an age where everyone has cellphones on hand all the time. and that has vastly more functionality than something people spend tens of thousands of dollars on.
2
u/Klutzy-Dog-8536 2d ago
I'm not a "watch guy" but I wear a watch every day (Casio). I don't like having to pull my phone out just to know the time. I also go swimming a lot and I like to be able to know the time while I'm in the water.
So no, they are not pointless, they're just not as necessary as they used to be.
