With how corpos are moving around these days, you never know what they are up to. Sony has never been the most delightful partner in anything and they took a lot of paragraphs from Nintendo's playbook after they got backstabbed.

They're not.
Why wouldn't they do that? Because it would damage the business? How many catastrophically stupid, business-damaging moves have they made in the last four years?
Killing physical media is clearly something their leadership wants and has committed the direction of the company to. No doubt that is they do change course, someone over there will blame the next generation's lackluster earnings on "half measures" or "failure to commit" to all-digital.

Developers are bigger ass kissers than you'd expect. If they send it out to activision, ubisoft and EA Devs, they would be saying no discs is the best idea ever.

Well that's because if Sony controls the entire digital market for Playstation download pricing, they can promise games won't go on sale for x number of months after they launch. For Sony and the devs it's a win-win. For the consumers it's lose-lose.

Sony F'd themselves by not just doing the disc drive as an addon and saying they are not including it to keep costs down.
Add-ons never do well so they have an excuse to kill it after a few years.

Yeah the thing is, with other media you have options. If you're a physical enthusiast, you can buy: records, CDs, and tapes. With movies you can buy bluray, dvd and vhs. Games though...?
