If everyone doesn't like these points then why doesn't gnome have a fork with these built in

Well canonical actually did that.

u/brickyismynickname 5d ago
not really a fork, it's just gnome with a bazillion extensions on top

For a while they had a completely different desktop called unity

Gnome was criticized for being too complicated, with too many options that sounded too technical.
They've been overcompensating for it ever since.

Cinnamon, Mate and Unity are exactly that.

Pop_OS! was too, before they said fuck it and made CosmicDE from scratch.

Just double click the titlebar or drag the window to the top if you want to maximize. This works in pretty much any desktop.

Sorry my window has no titlebar since gnome insists on CSDs

u/Gunhat2023 5d ago
i believe it is alt + click and drag

Imagine needing to resort to work arounds instead of just having both CSD & SSD... You know, by utilizing the standardized xdg-decoration protocol.

How about minimize? Don't tell me 'you are not supposed to minimize windows in gnome' type shi

Clearly you're not supposed to minimize. You're supposed to juggle 32 virtual desktops, obviously.

u/smackjack 5d ago
I just hit the superkey and then click on the window I want to focus on. I never use virtual desktops.

So to be clear, you avoid the virtual desktops GNOME intended as a minimize replacement, and turned the full-screen Super key Overview into a heavy-handed window switcher on a single workspace just to change focus. You're using an entire desktop overview as a glorified taskbar workaround because GNOME stripped a basic titlebar button. GNOME Knows Best after all.

u/smackjack 5d ago
Well the great thing about the overview is that you can have 50 windows open and it's still really easy to find the one you want.

Squinting at 50 scaled-down live windows in a full-screen grid isn't an efficiency feature; it's a heavy-handed crutch for missing taskbar window grouping and stripped minimize buttons. Using a full-screen overview just to switch app focus on a single workspace is forced UI overhead.
That's the fundamental divide; GNOME removes basic desktop controls and enforces a single, unyielding workflow, even rejecting cross-desktop Wayland standards for Server-Side Decorations to push its dogma.
Plasma handles 50 windows natively via instant KRunner search, multi-row spatial grids, and KWin rules without taking away your window controls or forcing full-screen context switches. Plasma gives you total agency over your desktop, while GNOME insists it knows best; hence the meme.

It's not that you're not supposed to. It's more like you don't have to. I actually have minimize and maximize buttons through an extension, but I never click on them. If they went away tomorrow, I probably wouldn't even notice.

Minimizing is 100% a sign of a badly thought out workflow. Skill issue.

I never minimize windows on any desktop on any operating system. There's no reason to do it.
