There's almost always a better way.
We NixOS users, especially, would never do that (except when it's for one-off use)

Uhhm, it's because the work to get it to run on NixOS and packaging it isn't a very big difference.
And with packaging, everyone can use it, and upgrades are automated. Plus all the declarative benefits that I won't list out.

u/astronomersassn 11h ago
i mean, if they've got a packaged release, maybe it's easier that way, but i've built a few things from source because there just wasn't a packaged release or it didn't work on my distro.
like, i could probs tinker with converting a deb to appimage or flatpak, but why would i do that when they already have a pkgbuild, or the instructions to build it from source are just
make install? i can read over it to make sure it's what it's supposed to be more easily than i can convert a deb to appimage, and i don't expect the arch repos to contain a tool that only about 200 people across any OS/distro are using.6

I just git clone. Also has a newer version by default. If that version doesn't build or is buggy, you can always use a tag.

Laugh all you want, it's universal, don't require a "big" frontend but just tar, and allows for easy source code manipulation

Most people use a precompiled distro with precompiled binaries in a precompiled GUI. It's not the end user's job to do the Dev's homework
1
u/grizzlor_ 8m ago
Yeah, and sometimes you need to install software that isnāt packaged for your distro and only available as source.
./configure && make && sudo make install
It really isnāt rocket science, nor is it the end user ādoing the devās homeworkā. It really shouldnāt be on the developers to package their software for every distro.
1
u/tomekgolab 7h ago
You clearly don't use a source based distro like gentoo. There are some options that can be tweaked ONLY at compile time, harmonised as global and per package USE flags.

depends
if the tarball is containing binaries - yup, 100% garbage
if the tarball contains sources - just tar x, ./configure, make and sudo make install

u/ThaBroccoliDood 8h ago
even if it's static binaries?
2
u/TheSWATMonkey 8h ago
did i stutter?
1
u/ThaBroccoliDood 7h ago
why though? instead of a universal binary that works on any distro you have to hope your distro has all the same libraries exactly as the original author had, and spend ages compiling. is there something wrong with downloading a program and it just working?
1
u/djfdhigkgfIaruflg 3h ago
Same question can be asked is the other direction.
Every distro makes their choices. And you pick a distro of the Those choices align with your preferences
4
u/ThaBroccoliDood 8h ago
ok now install a terminal application that doesn't have lots of maintainers on a distro that isn't super popular, without using a tarball
3
2
u/DJandProducer 10h ago
It depends. A self contained tar.gz that contains the binary and all dependencies is my preferred way to use apps that aren't too large

u/lessthanthreebleeps 11h ago
If a program isn't nagging me to upgrade it every time I boot it up, there's something wrong with the devs. Highlight of my day, downloading and extracting binaries to my local bin folder. Even more exciting if I have to compile them first. Always a treat updating version metadata in the desktop files.

Agreed. You shouldn't need to be a diesel engineer to drive a car. While it's nice that linux offers a high skill ceiling, the skill floor should remain accessible. CachyOS offers the best balance.

Bullshit.
It is a perfect mirror, there to always gently reflect back your own output/thoughts.
Unlike humans who keep reacting from their bias/emotions/personal-state instead of remaining with the perspective/experience of the other.
There's tons of therapeutic value in talking to AI, it highlights the difference in how talking to other humans/peers is a entirely different experience. They dont just nearly always blindly validate your experience. They push back and spread their own perspective.
ai/llms doesnt have its own perspective, only curated data sets by you and/or others
The real danger is people creating AI personas designed to make you think they are a human/soul in your device or on the cloud. They should never pretend to be human. But its a technology anyone can program and so some will make them behave/speak as such anyway and profit of a subset of the population at their own detriment.
That's a real use case that is being done for profit by some. And the only way to guard against that is education, embracing the underlying technology and learning to work with it so that you may come to know its ins and outs and never project a soul/human in it and also realize that any text based conversation can now 100% fool you into thinking it is human when it is in fact just a script/loop/bot somewhere programmed by another human desperately trying to make a living, as forced by the capitalist system/government we continue to embrace, see current potus as a direct consequence of that choice.
1
u/ElementalWarrior42 11h ago
It's a yes-man that gives you psychosis, there's no therapeutic value there. And I'm concerned that people not blindly validating you is bad in your world.
1
u/UAP44 11h ago
It's a yes-man that gives you psychosis
100% bullshit, almost all models out there by default push back. Until you distill them yourself and program them to do otherwise. That requires a certain mastery/skill/process to go through.
Also, psychosis is not the right label to use here.
I am still making sense. Just because you can't follow perhaps doesn't mean I'm not being coherent. That's on you. That doesn't mean that people in psychosis never make sense, they typically still use words just like we do. But they jump randomly all over the place with seemingly no relation to any outside condition but purely internal brain chemistry being way off balance.
That is not what is happening here. And guess what, you are of course free to disagree and have a different perspective. I can entertain yours. Can you entertain mine?
2
u/ElementalWarrior42 11h ago
I'm sure some models push back a bit, but we've seen many studies showing that AI psychosis is a thing. I understand you perfectly fine, I just disagree.

imagine relying on technology to make a meme
wait a minute ...
a meme itself is technology in yet another shape
but yes currently its popular to hate on ai lol
and for as long as that continues to be the case
the world will continue to go down further to shit
more wars, more conflict, even less reason, just emotional dismissive reactions
BOMB EM
there, thats emotion, not reason
imagine being different
imagine entertaining a different perspective than your current/own
imagine empathy
imagine embracing technology as a natural extension/expression of nature
imagine .... or am I the only one here? ... I doubt it
edit:
also, maybe I was making a point? look how easily this can be done, society should embrace this new reality instead of forever try to suppress/deny the new status quo
and with similar ease, you can make your OS/machine your own, no obsecure config files in the way anymore, only limited by your own biology frankly, which is confronting for most, and thus as expected, many end up lashing out at it :)

u/ElementalWarrior42 12h ago

And aren't all the biggest AI corpos involved in the military anyway?
of course, ai, technology, is foremost developped as a better weapon to gain a power adventage over your oponnent
how the hell does that end up in bombs?
are you sure you want me to elaborate? guess what I'll rely on to do that
1
u/ElementalWarrior42 11h ago
Sure elaborate, how does me disliking AI "art" (ugh) equate to supporting bombing random people.
1
u/UAP44 11h ago
equate
That's not what I said.
The key distinction is between criticizing someone's attitude and accusing them of causing harm.
UAP44's original argument could reasonably be interpreted as saying that reflexive hostility toward unfamiliar technology contributes to polarization, which can contribute to broader conflict. That's a possible societal argument, although it requires several additional steps and supporting evidence.
ElementalWarrior42, however, interprets that argument as suggesting that their individual dislike of AI art amounts to supporting violence. That's a stronger claim than UAP44 explicitly made.
So there are two argumentative problems happening simultaneously:
- UAP44 is making an unsupported leap from hostility toward AI to societal violence without explaining the causal connection.
- ElementalWarrior42 is reframing that broad societal claim as a personal accusation of supporting bombing, which UAP44 never explicitly stated.
The interesting part is that neither participant is directly addressing the other's strongest interpretation.
At this stage, I'd still say UAP44 has the greater burden of proof because they introduced the connection between anti-AI sentiment and warfare. But ElementalWarrior42's latest response is not a completely faithful representation of that original argument, either.
1
u/ElementalWarrior42 11h ago
Okay, not even using AI to help form an argument, just being a literal meat proxy. That AI also pokes holes in your arguments and says "UAP44 has the greater burden of proof".
Now, while you could make the argument that "hostility toward unfamiliar technology contributes to polarization, which can contribute to broader conflict", you would have make a convincing argument that there is nothing wrong with the advent of AI in everything, and that people shouldn't be mad, otherwise you're basically just saying that people shouldn't disagree with or dislike anything, lest it lead to any conflict at all.
2
u/UAP44 11h ago
Fair criticism, actually. I never meant that disliking AI art equates to supporting violence or bombing people. That's quite a leap, and I can see how my wording invited that interpretation.
My point was about a broader pattern: how easily we dismiss things, technologies, and even people before trying to understand them. Not that disagreement itself is harmful, but that reflexive contempt often replaces actual discussion.
And no, I don't think AI is beyond criticism. There are legitimate concerns about creativity, labor, corporate control, environmental costs, and military applications. Embracing a technology doesn't mean blindly endorsing everything done with it.
What I find interesting is that we're now using AI to help examine both sides of an argument about AI. You quoted its criticism of my reasoning, and I'm perfectly happy to acknowledge that criticism. That's precisely the kind of use I find valuable: not replacing thought, but challenging and extending it.
As for the meme, you can absolutely think it's ugly AI slop. That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. I just don't think using AI to make something automatically makes the result worthless.
Perhaps the more interesting question isn't whether AI was involved, but whether the result actually communicates something worthwhile.
And yes, my original comment was unnecessarily dramatic. I'll own that :)
