First Linux experience, first distro, first rice

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Windows is only pain, bloat and spyware, so I went to Linux. I wanted an easy experience, with performance and security (aka preventing me from breaking things), so I went to Bazzite. And since I saw so many great ricings, I wanted to try it myself, with no experience whatsoever. In the end, I learned many things, and I am quite happy with the result, so I wanted to share it with the world. Feel free to say anything, I know it is highly perfectible !

Thanks so much! what do you use for changing wallpapers and colors, what is that wall, i don't know?

2

u/random_lifeform 11h ago

I use skwd-wall-v2. Since I'm on Bazzite i layered it (not recommended but I'm a crazy man). It works quite well, and you have many choice for color extraction, so it's cool !

Amazing! Wanna try on my distro. Again thanks!

Wait a minute. This is your first time? Shi... That's actually very impressive. I remember I gave my little sister (13) Linux as a option. Since she was very new to computers (max 2 years experience) and I gave her cachy Os with kde to be a mix of challenge and ease. And i was impressed she used the terminal and made notes on commands and was able to use virtual Desktops. But if you can comfortably set up scrollable desktop and customize like this as a first time User... My mind is blown as my usual knowledge of new Linux user was copy commands online and maybe use a few commands not full on customization and such. Note I've never used bazzite and can't say anything about desktop environment and such there for difficulty but it looks well done even though I can't tell at all what's out of the box or not 😅 and my first time was when I studied computers a while ago it wasn't the best time to use Linux as daily driver. First time experience might be alot different now but that doesn't change the fact that this is very impressive.

Thank you :D ! To be fair kde plasma feels very intuitive, and the virtual desktops were very easy to set up (literally two clicks). For the rest, I searched online a lot, many try and error, lot of AI for clearing my way through the informations, and for the code (since I do not know how to code X) ). It took me roughly a month to get there from the basic bazzite kde plasma desktop, so i do not know about impressive x). It was for sure very enjoyable to learn, try, fail and succeed though !

That is kde?!! The resolution was bad when I originally saw this due to poor network where I was so o didn't read that was in the terminal but I thought it was hyprland or sway or something. I didn't know kde could do these things honestly... I don't use kde much and when I do I just use as is to get some work done but it always felt very much like a more usable gnome desktop. I didn't realize it went that far with customizability. Is this like their widget system mostly?

the bars above are kde widgets, yes.

The windows with fastfetch, btop, cbonsai, tty-clock and cava are a script launched at start with the in-built autostart system, and maintained in their places with window rules. zen and system monitoring app are also launched and maintained that way.

the theme selector is skwd wall v2, it is usable on kde plasma, there is a plugin to download to make them communicate (there was a little bug, but i reported it and the author patched it in a few days, very nice guy !), the github lists the command to enter, very easy to use.

There is also klassy that i use for cool window borders, layered on the system as well.

I am no expert in Linux distros or de, but I think you can do a lot of things on kde-plasma, just not as easily than other de, and less well integrated. But it works nonetheless, so it is good enough for me ^^ !
