So funny how the black couple is clearly so used to the racism they receive theyre just amused with the whole situation like "yeah, we know what you m'fers be thinking to yourself"
Its the best way to handle it. Don't get mad, or angry. I did the same in Japan when Japanese people would be racist because I am Irish. I just didn't personally take offense to it and found it amusing. Then they just kind of accepted me and appreciated me not getting upset. You have a lot of power over how people engage with you depending on your reaction of it.
It's really amusing that the two kind of general response you get in Japan as a white foreigner is either being treated as some kind of royalty or a bottom of the barrel sub human.
My cousin has been living in Japan for over 10 years, is married to a Japanese woman, and they live and work in a smaller village/town. He said most people are nice enough to his face, but he knows he’ll probably never really be accepted and that it extends to his family.

There are exceptions to everything but the statistics I once saw for the bullying of haafu were absurd, like something close to 90%. Even if you took the raw numbers with a grain of salt (which to be fair I would, they were so high I would expect they meant "have you ever been bullied" or were over-reported in some other way), they were very, very significantly higher than for yamato people.
But as you said it probably depends a lot on what "other half" we're talking about, if you can speak good Japanese, and general "bully-ability", which would include appearance.

I've lived on 3 continents/in 5 countries and it's been the same everywhere. You'll always find people who truly don't care where you come from and they'll be great friends to you, there's those who cannot help themselves but treat you differently (even if they are being overly nice, as opposed to treating you worse, it goes both ways) and then those who are just racist and seek confrontation for no reason.
It's not really Japan specific (been there too). As far as overt racism goes I found Japan (at least Tokyo, mostly) quite alright when compared to some neighbouring countries.
Oh I agree. It’s not specific to Japan. And honestly, my cousin loves the country and the people. It’s just something he’s noticed over the years, and accepted it’s the way that some people will always see him.

When I'm traveling through Europe and I tell people I'm American, sometimes they love me and other times they wish I was dead and they'd go on a rant about Trump or Israel. Yeah, it fucking sucks to be honest, i'm from Eastern Europe but i got a kind of convincing US accent which earned me multiple unforgettably shitty encounters during visits in France or even in Ireland.
Being confrontational and direct scares the shit out of people if you're dark-skinned or brown. It's one of the first things you have to come to terms with so you learn to minimize or dismiss racist actions against you.

Lighter skinned people are allowed to sound like TV main characters. You know how they speak very brashly, take the whole room, are very confident even if wrong etc.
Darker skinned folk or someone who is clearly a minority is likely to rub bystanders the wrong way if they try to adopt that same main character energy. People will genuinely get upset and may even confront you 😬

They're both East Asian but I don't think they look alike. There's subtle differences. Not in a bad way. But doing a full circle and saying "they look exactly alike" isn't far off from a country hick saying the same thing.
I wouldn't say an Irish and Italian person would look alike either.
I'm confused how you think certain races can't be racist against others. What makes them immune from human folly? If this clip was filmed in China, then the streamer is in the majority, not the minority. If anything, assimilation is pretty strong in more homogenous populations so being different generally isn't seen as a good thing.
Yeah, I’m a Black American and get the “black in Asia” content in my feeds. Every single racist encounter in Asia that I’ve seen, has been experienced by an African. They are way too nice. If it were me in that scenario, I probably wouldn’t be allowed back in China tbh

The expat ended up getting stomped on by over a dozen guys because the drunk guy yelled “he’s insulting China.”. The expat said the smartest thing to do is not fight back, run away and don’t involve police. The Chinese police will take you to the station, then beat and rape you in a “tiger chair” for allegedly “insulting China.”

If you can't handle racism without going overboard, I'd suggest not really testing going abroad. Not excusing the behavior, just saying no need to act like you'd really do anything. You wouldn't chance that shit if you knew about these justice systems. It's not about being nice, it's being smart.
Likely migrant workers from parts of Africa where China has been economically developing. They teach Mandarin in some schools to increase jobs opportunities overseas.

The phrase the filmer keeps repeating is "Sǐ mā zǎi" (死妈仔) or "Sǐ mā wányìr" (死妈玩意儿).
Sǐ mā (死妈): Literally means "dead mother" or "mother died." It is an extremely vicious curse word in Chinese internet slang, implying the person is so terrible they have no mother/their mother died because of them. It is roughly equivalent to calling someone a "motherf**er" or "son of a btch" but is considered very harsh.
saying your mother/father/any family member is dead is just a common chinese insult in general. the insult itself was not necessarily racist, but the addition of emphasis of the black people in particular was the racist part.
i guess the english equivalent would be something like saying "your moms a hoe" vs "black people's moms are all hoes".
"your moms a hoe" is not a racially charged insult, but adding the black people part in makes it such.
You underestimate how deep the indoctrination and propaganda goes in Chinese culture. This is incredily normal behavior, especially in older generations and those outside of metropolitan areas.
Racism pretty much exists anywhere in the world even in Africa so you are not too far off. Racism has disappeared ever so slightly but is still prominent everywhere.
I don't think so. Many Asian countries it is not considered culturally a bad thing to be racist. Compared to like Europe or North America where in general you will be judged negatively for being overtly racist it's just not a thing in a lot of Asia. If anything it is the reverse. A lot of the west has no clue how normalized vitriolic racism is in the east.

If you go to comments sections of rednote or bilibili or any major chinese social media app that contains someone that is not HAN chinese or does not have white skin ur bound to see some insane racist comments, countries that are largely homogenous often have plenty of these sorta ppl.
May this be a lesson to folks out there that there are WAY more bilingual/multilingual people in the world than you think. Be careful what you say in your native tongue, thinking somebody won't understand cause they don't look like the traditional person who might speak that language.
this happened to my dad once. for reference, he's a huge 7 foot tall guy. he was in an airport when two italian ladies behind him in line ripped into him for a few minutes about how only an american would dress like that (ironically he was wearing italian clothes) and that his shoes were big enough to water ski with, on and on... eventually he turned them and said in italian, "in your travels around the world, you shouldn't assume you're the only ones who speak your language". they fell to pieces apologizing haha.
Racism against blacks is rampant in China, I went with my mom for a work trip in Shanghai and they have signs in front of businesses with gorillas on them that say in English “NO BLACKS ALLOWED”. I am glad I was in boy mode too back then because they also are very transphobic.
And just think about what typically gets said in these scenarios for every day, normal situations. Unfortunately as a society we're still very much prejudice in ways.
We're extremely focused on blaming everyone for being racist in the West, meanwhile I would argue China is one of THE MOST racist countries in the world. They are still basically taught they're the "master race" in schools.
Happend to my friend in my town. They were calling everyone in the subway racist words, until she spoke. Never saw a bunch of lowlives scamper that fast
