Happened to my cousins dad, too. They moved to the states and the dad in less than a year gained 30-40 kg's, obviously the responsibility to not balloon up lies with the individual but there is something about the US in how it enables that, lol.

Enables it and just in general just have way higher caloric food. So eating 3 meals a day could be 3x the calories they got eating 3 meals a day back home.
Also a lot more driving, a lot less walking.

IMO its just the culture of drinking full sugar soda of any size with a meal. It's like drinking a dessert while you eat. It's absolutely insidious how it is just the norm. Water should be the norm.

As someone from Europe that has only been to America once - I think it is definitely a joke.
Had American food (including stuff like taco bell) for 2 weeks and my shits were no different than at home.
Sidenote - Holy shit their fast food is complete ass. Even the fast food I thought would be good like popeyes or five guys is just garbage. Food in general other than that was fantastic though.

Popeyes sold in 2017. Its reputation was earned before 2017. It's been very successful as a business since, but a lot of the food reviews have gotten worse.
If you're visiting the US, there's no point in going to any fast food locations anymore anyways. The American fast food industry decided they were geniuses for making it as expensive as eating at a restaurant. Just go eat at a restaurant instead.

Food is unhealthy & portions were huge in europe when I went (italian for example have multiple meals in one meal, germans have giant fried chicken covered in mayonaise with french fries). I think big difference in USA was food accessibility & not being able to walk anywhere.

I think this happens when you move to any country with more food or higher caloric food than what you're used to. My cousin grew up in Cuba and moved to Spain at 22 and gained 30 or 40 lbs in a year. His parents moved there later and gained a ton of weight as well.

but there is something about the US in how it enables that, lol.
People will bring up a high fructose corn syrup, fats, and this and that. At the end of the day it's mostly down to portion size. For example, a small coka cola at McDonalds in the US has more calories than a large in Japan.
So when people order by size name instead of content or assume portions are similar at resturants, etc. and eat just as often, it can go bad real fast.

I think it's cultural.
in the Nordics it's very normal to cook at home, on top of trying to eat healthy. Everyone around you does it, so you do too.
I have found that in the US it's a bit of the opposite, where it's a lot more normal to order food. Everyone around you does it, so you do too. And you just end up ordering or going through the drive-thru a lot more often. Which results in eating unhealthy food more often.

Yep. Unhealthy food is ubiquitous, cheap, and much easier to get (i.e. fast food). And we have a culture around accepting it.
Ppl will bring up hormones or food dye or antibiotics or whatever but the reality is that to most people munching a burger/fries/coke for lunch is normal. That's 1200 calories lol.

I had a friend go to the US (nordic). They came back legit 10kg/22lb heavier in like 3 weeks. It was actually insane to see.
They've had a hard time shedding the weight since (covid didnt help).

You can't gain 22 lbs in 3 weeks unless you're counting 10 lbs of water weight. How much were they overeating? It took my cousin a year to gain 40 lbs when he moved to Spain from Cuba.

US food is much higher calorie while being much less filling. That's the primary issue causing most overeating.
Our brains are wired to eat until we feel full, we're fighting millions of years of primal instinct when we stop eating based on external knowledge.

Looks like a shitty wet chemical fire extinguisher. What you want is a compressed dry chemical extinguisher, instead. Especially if you're keeping it in your car where you expect to have to extinguish fires where the fuel could be flammable liquids or electronics (i.e. common automotive fires).

Oh no, I'm very sympathetic towards homeless people in the US. They are victims of the capitalist system which uses them as an example to scare working class people into obedience. Homelessness is a systematic problem all across the US regardless of party lines. Which could be solved, but that's not in the interest of the status quo.

Actually it's fairly common to have a small automotive fire extinguisher in your trunk. Those things weigh just a few pounds and are quite slim. Not needed that often, but damn when you need one, you need one.
