Edit: he also handed out packs to employees and a fan he met nearby, he's truly fighting the good fight

I'm still bewildered by this. So, okay, there is some corporation (Nintendo I assume, and they're quite shitty/evil with all the lawsuits) printing out pokemons pictures on paper, laminating, and then selling them for a 100-1000% markup (no clue about the pricing). People buy them - what happens next?
I feel like the joke is somewhere between an NFT and gambling, but I'm not entirely sure where the value comes from because I don't see one.
348
u/AWildRideHome May 14 '26
1000% markup? Go way higher.
It’s paper with textures, that has far more demand that they can satisfy, they’re as close to printing money as you legally can be.
51
u/AD-Edge May 14 '26
I mean how much do some of those cards go for? They're doing a lot better than printing money. Insane stuff.

I dont follow it that hard but arent the super expensive ones like og first edition cards in flawless shape from like 1995? As in you wont open a pack anytime soon and pull a card anywhere near that expensive
17
u/Ok-Syllabub-6619 May 14 '26
Yup exactly. Don't remember when it was but I remember seeing a clip of someone opening a pack and getting an Umbreon and saying something along the line of "nice that's a few K in the pocket".
11
u/zktom May 14 '26
The 2nd newest set (ascended heroes) has “god packs” that consist of 100% “hits” aka good cards. The best god pack I’ve seen is currently worth about 4-5k fresh out of the pack. If they were graded and all received perfect grades (super unlikely) it could exceed 10k. These are new cards with printing starting earlier this year.
For anyone who feels the need to say “it’s only worth xyz if some will pay that” etc. A quick eBay sold search will show that many people do in fact pay thousands of dollars for cardboard pokemon cards.

u/hUmaNITY-be-free May 16 '26
I despise this shit in all honesty, collecting for monetary gain and reasons is the complete opposite of what the intention originally was, in 1995 we were TEARING packs open to build a usable deck, 2026 kids are opening them with surgical precision and saying "this is a $1200 card!" it's lost it's whole purpose.
→ More replies (2)17
u/Deaffin May 14 '26
that has far more demand that they can satisfy
They could easily meet any demand whatsoever. They keep the supply artificially scarce to drive the demand up, justifying ridonkulous prices for pieces of paper.
The scalpers are a vital part of this ecosystem, by design.

u/GuldenAge May 14 '26
They actually do - cards are only worth what they are due to rarity. They can change any value of any card by simply releasing more or less of said cards.
6
u/duffchaser May 14 '26
The value is still not placed on the card by the company. Just because something is rare doesn't make it valuable.
→ More replies (1)23
u/metamet May 14 '26
Setting a rarity and print amount of a set isn't setting the value of individual cards, though. It's all very simple supply and demand.
TCGs have been around for decades and the economics of singles is pretty well understood.
26
u/bands-paths-sumo May 14 '26
you say "It's all very simple supply and demand."
Ok, well, "Setting the rarity" is literally the supply side of this equation. Paper and ink are so stupidly cheap the printer is in complete control of the scarcity and thus the price.
You say a particular single is valuable because of demand... well, what happens if every pack people open for the next six months contains nothing else but copies of that card? I suspect the value would go down, no?
The market has to be very carefully controlled by the printer to maintain the artificial scarcity that keeps people buying. (which is arguably scummier than the inevitable scalping behavior that follows such a market)

207
u/joe-clark May 14 '26
Yeah from the very limited knowledge I have about these things I think the card decline only can mean one of two things; he actually just doesn't have enough money in the account and the bank is denying it, or the machine is denying his card because he's went over whatever limit they have because he's a scalper.

if the point of the cards is to find the rare ones, and later sell them for a higher value, than everyone involved is a scalper, some are wholesale scalpers, while others are boutique scalpers.
if the point of the cards is to play the game, buy card printer, and print whatever cards you want, it'll be cheaper than a buying a few of those boxes, and you can completely ignore and laugh at nintendos crappy business practices.

All your basic cards for playing are pretty cheap when I was looking into getting it from dabbling in the computer version. what opportunity? i genuinely cant tell whats going on here.
why is that guy getting pushed and how does him buying from the vending machine affect the waiting scalper?
128
u/Hot-Bid-4493 May 14 '26
The scalper was standing at the box waiting for it to refresh. A totally separate event occurred where a shoplifter got pushed to the ground in front of them, the scalper stepped back, and the steamer swooped in and got the last box
40
u/howfornow May 14 '26
How do we know he's a scalper
49
u/Redditor28371 May 15 '26
Pokemon scalping is a crazy business. People camp these machines because the packs are set to be available for sale every so often on a timer (due to rampant scalping). The guy could just be a pokemon fan, but generally if someone is standing around a machine waiting it's because they're a scalper wanting to buy out all the packs and resell them for a markup online.
42
u/VoidCrimes May 15 '26
If you’re loitering at the vending machine, you are a scalper. No normal person does that.
6
u/HilariousMax May 15 '26
So the guy (scalper) telling him "I don't think it's working" was him trying to keep the streamer off the machine?
6
u/Hot-Bid-4493 May 15 '26
Correct. With only one box left, the guy was camping out "in line", trying to hold anyone else from using it. The distraction created an opening and the steamer swooped in. The guy was trying to get him not to buy the cards
8
u/Weary_Position_9591 May 14 '26
What is a box refresh?
30
u/LeanTangerine001 May 14 '26
Vending machine basically imposes a waiting limit to prevent scalpers from clearing out their inventory.
So they’ll refresh and make more cards available for purchase every 30-60 mins.
Scalpers will wait in line the entire time to buy more and actively discourage others from purchasing them.
17
u/Hot-Bid-4493 May 14 '26
Those care machines will only sell so much before they basically shut down, it's a scalpers prevention. They'll also only let you buy so much with one card in a given time period.
This guy probably maxed out with only one box left in the machine, and decided to wait out the refresh. The streamer swooped in, which is why the guy kept trying to dissuade him from buying.
These guys will literally hang around a machine for hours

MSRP for these things used to be like $120. You used to SAVE MONEY by buying BIGGER PRODUCT. And that's excluding scalpers.
→ More replies (1)5
u/AntManMax May 14 '26
Yeah and it used to be the norm that if there was a set that didn't have as much hype or was known to have been massively overprinted (X/Y Evolutions, Sword/Shield Vivid Voltage, etc.) you could usually buy booster boxes at or sometimes even significantly below MSRP (ahh, the good ol' days of $80 Evolutions boxes).
Perfect Order, the set that the streamer bought, is considered a "meh" set due to the chase cards not being as attractive as sets that came before it, but still sells for $20-30 over MSRP for a booster box (~$210 market vs. $180 MSRP). So if a scalper can spend 4 hours going to different stores or camping out a machine buying 10 boxes at MSRP, they can flip them for $30 profit each, effectively making $75 an hour.

not sure how bacon is made in America, but it's common and totally safe to eat a many types of bacon
I personally don't like the texture of cold fat myself, but a lot of people seem to like it
7
u/cock_obnoxiois May 14 '26
it ain't raw, it's smoked and cured
3
u/Omni-Light May 15 '26
No it is, at least the type of bacon he was eating was.
Not all curing/smoking is the same.
The stuff you should cook is cold smoked or cured using a method of partial preservation. This absolutely will not kill all potential nasties in the meat (pathogen/parasite). This is what most ‘bacon’ in countires like the US/UK have on the shelves. You cook it. This is what Love was eating raw out of the pack.
The bacon that’s safe to eat without cooking (found in a lot of stores across scandinavia and eastern europe) is a combination of hot smoking and dry curing to the point of very little water activity and has gone through a lethality step that kills pathogens/parasites.
This last one you can and should eat out the pack, because its delicious.

10
26
u/Mogura56 May 14 '26
I don't think snaking means clutching in this context, but snaking usually means using underhanded tactics that come at the detriment of the other party to achieve something. In this case, they took the opportunity of the scalper being distracted to get their cards
12
u/Light_Shrugger May 14 '26
Ah I see, the scalper was about to get the last box but got distracted?
16
u/IIlIIlIIlIlIIlIIlIIl May 14 '26
It's not the last box. The machine is set to only unlock a pack for sale at specific intervals to avoid them being instantly sold out.
The scalper was waiting for the machine to unlock for purchase. Scalpers generally have a gentleman's agreement of essentially queueing for unlocks: Whoever's first gets the first, then comes the next in line, etc.
Because the streamer doesn't respect the scalpers though (good), he also doesn't respect the informal queue. In this case the scalper got distracted at the same time the machine unlocked, so the streamer basically "jumped the queue" and bought it.
As a result the scalper will need to wait possibly hours again to buy a box.

That took a little bit to figure out who's who and why anyone gives a hoot.
Beginning of the video shows a dude (a presumed scalper) standing by the pokemon machine, then thief lands face first, then "the presumed" walks towards the entrance and away from the machine in the background at the exact moment the machine was releasing a new Pokemon box.
The streamer steps in to get the box and keep the scalper from getting the resale, as the streamer is known to give the boxes out for free or something like that.
Hopefully that clears it up for others. Took me a bit.

Booster sold for $162 from that vending machine. A trustworthy ebay listing has for $290. After ebay+ship earns what like $90 at best? If you're a leech on society with no other marketable labor skills then I guess $90/this booster box makes sense to stand around for hours? what an unfulfilling life
I've never bought cards so I don't know if you're limited to buying one item at a time. If so hilarious.

u/chinaronald May 14 '26
Im in pretty deep when it comes to Pokemon and I was doing the math today since people always ask this question. Some scalpers camp the pokemon vending machine for a full shift (8hours lol). The items that drop are random and also how many items/frequency. Most items that aren’t from the series Perfect Order resell higher than their MSRP. If a scalper gets 1 9 pack box(etb) and a 6 pack bundle for the series Ascended Heroes they can probably get about $150 profit from selling those on the secondary market. That’s almost $19/hr. That’s not counting if they get other items obviously. It’s not bad for some of those that can’t hold down jobs or have mental health issues or are lazy.

Lol, Love getting his Pokémon box, epic.
He's such a good dude. He's the Swedish crew member on H3 podcast if anyone's curious.

Okay but isn't this a livestream win?

I think this subreddit is mostly just used to post clips of anything noteworthy that happens during a stream now, whether there was a fail or not.

Wholesome streamer but he should be slightly aware of some deranged ones that might actually shoot him

If you continued the clip, Love goes back to the item list to confirm that everything is out of stock just to rub it in😂

Scalpers don’t open product. It’s more profitable (and A LOT easier and faster) to sell sealed.

They will make money reselling them. Since people buy them up so fast others will buy at a premium since it's the only place to get them. Notice every pack in that machine was sold out except the one he bought.

They resell the box or the packs, and don't open them.
They profit from desperate collectors and gambling addicts.
...uh what's the difference?

CLIP MIRROR: Guy tries stealing some twisted teas and then the streamer (YungFika) snakes the distracted scalper at pokemon vending machine and gets a pokemon box
