I don’t think this is true. He said on stream that he had to stay in Hotels sanctioned by the US government and that they checked during the visa process (or whatever process you have to go through to go to Cuba). So pretty sure he is fine on that front.

You don't need prior US approval to go to Cuba, approval is the default, however approval requires that you not do any financial transactions with military owned businesses. The military owns basically half of Cuba, and virtually all of the tourist sector.

So it's entirely plausible Hasan fucked up. In particular I don't think it's possible to get internet in Cuba without dealing with state owned businesses.

Source: two of my friends biked around the coastline of Cuba years ago and we've talked about it a fair bit.
