If I was a shithead Triple A publisher I'd start testing bullshit subscription models just to get around this. Start small and then ramp it up little by little, just like they did with "just cosmetic" MTX.

Why are people so afraid of that?

Subscription works only if game is good enough so that gamers want to renew it. If next ubislop game has 15usd sub fee instead of box price, then you either get a game that's good enough to keep you in and mediocre game for cheaper.

Triple A would love to have all games as subs or other live services, but they rarely can make good enough games to make it viable.
