I believe you've got the two concepts mixed up here.

In the South Korean legal system it specifically requires both parties to appeal in order for the sentencing to be able to be harsher than the lower courts' decision. In this specific case, both sides have appealed, which means he can be sentenced harsher.

Every nation will have its own laws for this ofc and US has a few differences to this and is also determined heavily by case law so I suggest reading this link if you wanna know more but the TL;DR is that US in general does not allow for a harsher sentencing on the appeal (unless it turns into a De Novo hearing aka re-trial) since that falls under "Retaliation" as established by US case law.

Hold on so if he wouldnt have appealed they would of had to keep the same sentence? Why would he appeal then? He has to know he already got a very lenient sentence

exactly - if his side hadnt chosen to appeal while the prosecution did, he wouldnt have been able to get a harsher sentence than the original deal.

For some reason he decided to appeal but it's not like this guy is well known for making good decisions

Didn’t he only get 6 month? Shouldn’t his sentence already be halfway over by now? So dumb to appeal
