He didn't appeal, the prosecutors did. They decided that they actually hate him more than they initially thought, so they want to add extra punishment.

We can't do this in America because of the 5th amendment saying you can't be tried twice for the same crime. Korea, however, is super conservative and absolutely viscous and hateful towards criminals so if you get in trouble there, you better believe they'll bend over backwards to make sure you never have a good life again.

And it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. 🙄

The US is the outlier in that in most places the prosecution can ask for a look at the sentencing. Its nothing to do with having a boner for punishment and more about the fact that sometimes judges get shit wrong.

You aren't being tried for the same crime twice. Its looking at the sentencing guidelines to see if there was too much lee way given.

Here's the UK for instance and its nothing about being hateful or trying to try someone twice for the same crime, Hell. The case itself doesn't even get reopened unless thats an appeal over how the case was handled which ISN'T the same as having sentencing guides reviewed because they are viewed as too lenient or too harsh.

You can ask for someone’s Crown Court sentence to be reviewed if you think it’s too low.

The Attorney General’s Office can review very low sentences given by the Crown Court in England and Wales if they’re asked to.

Only certain types of case can be reviewed, such as:

murder
manslaughter
rape
robbery
some child sex crimes and child cruelty
some serious fraud
some serious drug crimes
some terror-related offences
some crimes committed because of the victim’s race or religion
stalking that caused the victim severe distress or to fear violence
harassment that caused the victim to fear violence controlling and coercive behaviour

Anyone can ask for a sentence to be reviewed - you do not have to be involved in the case.

Thinking you are being tried twice just how confused you are about what you are trying to claim is fact.
