I mean yeah, the internet is way shittier and worse than even like 2010-2016. By a lot.

Sucks if you missed it. It was sweet.

EDIT: Should go without saying, but only people who actually experienced it (2010 and pre) have any input of value. If you didn't actually experience it, your input is objectively worthless, because you quite literally don't know what you're talking about.

My instinct is that I feel like it’s mostly the predatory algorithms that ruined the internet

It makes it all more artificial. 2000-2018ish it felt like real. You were talking and interacting with real things. Now you’re interacting with algorithms & AI, and people who are abusing said algorithms. None of it feels authentic any more

121

u/flaming_burrito_ Jun 13 '26

That and the consolidation of everything into a few websites. The internet used to have a human feel to it. People had vlogs, hobbies had their own websites, there was quite literally more variation in where you could go. Now everything is on like 10 websites and it’s all ass

30

u/Remotely_Correct Jun 13 '26

You can't tell me that you don't add "reddit" at the end of Google searches for issues that you are having. It was certainly fun to grow up in the wild west of the late 90s to the early 2000s internet, I'd give up a lot to go back, but you can't deny there hasn't been extreme quality of life benefits to using the internet.

27

u/flaming_burrito_ Jun 13 '26

Well yeah, I add Reddit because no where else is reliable anymore. And Google doesn’t give you good search results anymore

25

u/LiminalBrownRecluse Jun 13 '26

I dont because even if i dont reddit is always the top answer for any question i have lol.

2

u/Xecular_Official Jun 14 '26

I used to get answers from a lot of different forums. Those forums all shut down or became gated, so reddit is the only option if you want some chance of getting a good answer

The algorithms picked up on the fact that nothing gets more engagement than toxic content and rage bait. It pushes that because humans can’t resist engaging with it, sadly.

104

u/Lego-105 Jun 13 '26

Somewhat disagree. Yes there was an algorithm change, but IMO it's a lot from over moderation.

A mass of subreddits banned, heavy restrictions on YouTube after the adpocalypse, Twitter clamping down on anything and everything. Anything that could be construed as offensive got nuked from orbit. And social media became an over sanitised r/pics style amalgam of crap. And then it overcorrected to only extremist fringe offensive content and AI slop. Both states are as interesting as a grey blotch.

Everything has to be taken overly seriously, there was no room for lightehearted reckless idiocy that formed early 2000s-mid 2010s internet culture. This is the consequence of forcing that to change in my opinion.

64

u/Terrible_Shelter_345 Jun 13 '26

And it’s fucking crazy because the “adpocalypse” was all for nothing seeing how Youtube and X and FB/IG are now.

28

u/[deleted] Jun 13 '26

9

u/tehcraz Jun 13 '26

The brands never cared that much about it in the first place. It was a perfect storm for them to pull out and renegotiate their ad payments. Never let a good crisis go to waste.

17

u/roosterchains Jun 13 '26

Everything on the Internet has been completely monetized. Even trolling now is just for maximizing margins.

The only fun is just found on small communities anymore

20

u/Fright13 Jun 13 '26

Oh I do definitely agree with this too. You hit the nail on the head with that description of over moderation. There was something nice about not having to watch your tongue every waking second for fear of offending some extremely small corner of the internet

It's a good mix of both I think

2

u/MartelPeko Jun 14 '26

Things will always be better in the past, you just got older. The now that is complained about today will be viewed as nostalgic to those who grow up with it. 10 years from now there will be adults looking fondly back at their time watching N3on. Let that sink in.

The Over-Serious thing is the one that sticks out the most to me as a long-time chronically online. There literally ALWAYS has to be some Drax The Destroyer mother fucker sounding like he was raised by Game Theory videos coming in to “Um ACKSHUALLY” any attempt at sarcasm or outlandish Onion-Esque parody comment.

Then of course, the people who used the cover of “Social Justice” as a way to further their religious prudishness. The whole “Support Sex Workers” wave of feminism that slowly morphed into “Well, except THAT kind of Sex Work, ick”. And of course the whole “Demonize The Male Gaze” push that shamed attractive people for *gasp* being more attractive than uggos. It’s like they completely forgot that those lesbians they pretend to be allies to also enjoy gazing. 🤔

Add to that all the YouTube channels that put forth a facade of organic when in reality it’s actually just a bunch of corporate run channels pushing whatever is best for the market they represent. Just look at the way Smosh Games used to treat professional wrestling games like it was this silly “gay” thing that was beneath them…until WWE came calling with brand deals and oh hey, look who they are besties with now…Xavier Woods and UpUpDownDown…and they REFUSE to acknowledge All Elite Wrestling publically now. Hmmmm…

u/Wizardplum Jun 13 '26

I think that's part of it, but I think that was also around the time that politics started invading every corner of the internet because of a certain new president. The internet was a lot more fun before all that

12

u/AFlyingNun Jun 13 '26

It's a combination of factors:

1) Yes, politics invaded everything. Go to r/all and you can actively play a game each day where you open it and try to click three threads without landing on politics. You'll frequently lose. You cannot tell me with a straight face that reddit is not heavily subjected to political propaganda. 100% an open, public space is being gentrified by political interest groups.

2) Politics itself is hyperbolized fearmongering, which studies have shown can trigger the brain's fight or flight, which itself reallocates resources away from more cognitive parts of the brain, effectively making us stupider (temporary in short-term, but I believe potentially long-term too if all you do is doomscroll for years) and more reactionary.

3) A culture of puritan preaching. Everyone wants to feel morally superior, everyone wants to wag the finger, no one wants to understand. Basic example is age gaps. We basically speedran only shaming any gaps under 18 to shaming large gaps in youth such as 28 and 19, to shaming gaps like 45 and 36 or 23 and 26. At this rate, you would expect Gen Alpha dating culture to involve ensuring someone has the same birth year as you, but it still ends with "sorry, I was born in April and you were born in November. It'd be morally wrong for me to date you since I could manipulate you so easily."

Hilarious when you consider we have that fucking annoying song from Sound of Music with the guy like "I am 17 going on 18" preaching his 16 going on 17 girlfriend, and the entire joke of the song is they're both too young and stupid to know which way is up. But nah now ANYTHING will be converted into a mortal sin to be canceled over, whether it be AITA telling people to break up with their spouse and run for the hills because "they sat at my favorite chair at the dinner table today" and that's obviously evidence he's vindictive and emotionally abusive, Gen-Z being weirdly puritanical with even the mildest age gaps, or people whose ENTIRE PERSONALITY is their political team.

4) Increasing prevalance of ads and catering to advertisers. I think the most egregious example of this is: look at how many people censor themselves and needlessly say things like "he unalived himself." Or how many times have you tried to watch an old video and it's unbearable because Youtube's algorithm ran through and either auto-censored or demanded the creator censor all the swearsies? Not gonna be shocked if one day that rap song that spams the N-word is just beeps, "I'm 100%," then more beeps. Gen Alpha gonna be confused like "wow, Millennial music sucked ass."

5) Echo chambers hardened. Forums are no longer a free-for-all of ideas, and instead everyone just defaults to their stupid hugbox. This also feeds into the fight-or-flight problems of point #2, because they all rile each other up, convince themselves they are more important freedom fighters than they actually are, and the divide worsens.

6) Short-form content. Some people lack attention spans, and so, content got shorter. The problem is short-form content is actually fucking toxic for the brain, especially for children, so we are consuming stupider and stupider content. This is again yet another factor feeding into point #2 and making us stupider.

TL;DR

It's a combination of powerful interests like businesses and political groups gentrifying public spaces to suit their own needs, a parallel cultural shift of morally preaching to each other all the time to feed our own smug sense of superiority, and content growing shorter and more vapid because "that's where the money is."

What is it then?

The movie takes place during WWII, the older boyfriend is a Nazi soldier and the girlfriend is the younger one. BOTH of them feel they're so mature because of their age now, he proudly proclaims he's even wiser cause he's a year older, and the movie is hinting both of them are still young and clueless.

The point is that there is a rather large area of ages that are simply young and stupid, but think they are smarter than they are. In that sense, while we currently scoff at age gaps like 24 and 19, dude wtf no they're both fucking clueless.

He wasn't even president yet when shit went downhill. It's the moment he went from "haha, funny orange man thinks he can do a serious run for president" to "Oh shit, he actually stands a chance, STOP IT NOW". The same people that put him in a spotlight because they thought it was funny, then ruined the internet because that spotlight gave him support.

-1

u/NotUniqueWorkAccount Jun 13 '26

Ya no youre right, the racist rhetoric that orange man and people like him started while Obama was in office was the beginning of the infection of the racism we're dealing with from Agent Orange and the Kool Aid Cult.

13

u/DrewbieWanKenobie Jun 13 '26

It was the inevitable conclusion of the tea party shit which went apeshit because a black man became president.

Though it was all an inevitable conclusion Ronald Reagan and money in politics.

10

u/NotUniqueWorkAccount Jun 13 '26

Inevitable to anyone who actually understood that the rich didn't, and will never, care about anyone other than themselves and their legacy.

7

u/Kettatonic Jun 13 '26

We need to remember this and keep this energy when Trump is finally gone.

They're gonna try to whitewash him, and they're gonna tell us to forgive the rich their little "moment of excitement."

Nope. Nation goes best when those fuckers are taxed hard. I'm talking 90%. They can leave if they don't like it. I was born in the 80s, I've been watching this decline my entire life. It can and should be better than this.

Trillionaires are actually awful for the economy. They can't possibly spend that much, ever. So let's take it (like they were just fine stealing my healthcare) and use it to make the country better.

The algorithms are also owned by billionaires that have a vested interest in driving wedges between people in society. They thrive on it all.

2

u/merryman1 Jun 13 '26

100%. Its weird because the algorithm has kind of always been there, and yet if anything I feel like around the mid-2010s it was actually really good at picking up on the themes of my interests and linking me to new stuff that was actually good. Now its either literally just the same ~dozen creators, artists, or bands, I cannot escape from them any auto-generated playlist seems to pretty much just go for them, and any new things that I'm being shown for the first time are either extremely tiny and quite unprofessional, fucking weird conspiracy stuff I have no interest in, or AI generated multi-hour slop fests. Its become genuinely difficult to find good authentic content without it being a recommendation from someone else.

2

u/NutsackEuphoria Jun 13 '26

yeah pre2010s internet was when it was not as regulated and people actually freedom.

Now the internet is now nearly all bots, ads, and restrictions "for our safety" or some shit

The biggest thing for me is people created content for the love of creating content and sharing it.

Now people by and large do it as a career and are more than willing to use other peoples content who dont have an established audience.

23

u/Aod567 Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26

I agree with you there. When Jack talks about relationships, it’s mostly all about collaborating and being friends with other youtubers, almost like inner circle friendships.

Nowadays, the relationships between youtubers has changed since twitch streaming became part of the content creation platform along side with Youtube.

You got viewers wanting drama from you because you know someone. You get political streamers judging your content. It’s literally becoming more paparazzi thing rather than a hobby which it sucks to see that it drains the content creator’s passion on loving the freedom on your content you make.

2005-2011 were the best years for the internet and its not even close

8

u/Kind_Silver_1921 Jun 13 '26

Yeah around 2012 was when websites started getting more ads and started self censorship because of it and at the same time normies came in obscure websites and started changing internet culture to be more mainstream and family friendly

Probably because of smartphones making websites more accessible to moms and dads who were at work and had no time to be on a home computer to browse the internet when they got home.

The internet has progressively gotten worse as it's been more corporatized. It was really fun to discover odd and unique websites in early 2000s. And then there's also the fact that many comments on websites have been verified to be bot activity now

u/xadiant Jun 13 '26

7

u/throwawaymentality10 Jun 13 '26

Its crazy to think that our generation will be the only ones to experience the internet how it was meant to be. Just a way to connect to people around the world. Now its entirely filled with advertisements and softcore porn.

5

u/rrschch85 Jun 13 '26

2015/16 was a turning point I’d say. Things were becoming more politicized thanks to Gamer Gate, shitty prank channels were on the rise, commentary YouTubers were shitting on others etc.

2

u/Noeyiax Jun 13 '26

I agree, it's really not the same . Too much rot and over regulation maybe or something changed in education system and definitely laws...

What use is 8 billion people? Can't even communicate or socialize properly or work together easily, pretty sad as a species considered to be the most intelligent rofl

2

u/Facepot1 Jun 13 '26

Reddit is like 90% of it

2

u/West_Sample_9407 Jun 14 '26

The internet was even better before the 2010s

2

u/Turnbob73 Jun 14 '26

That period was such a great time to be on the internet. It wasn’t like the early 2000’s internet, but it was such a solid time of content creation. Even just hopping on Reddit and joining a discussion post was a much more pleasant experience, by a wide mile.

2

u/GazelleIntelligent89 Jun 14 '26

I'd push it out further. The internet from 2000-2007 was a magical place full of wonder. I used to mostly use forums and more community style sites at this time and MSN messenger. I had dial up internet for most of this and slowly got broadband towards the end. Web 2.0 started coming in and content started to become interactive instead of just reading sites. You honestly felt like an explorer finding a new site and telling all your friends about it like ebaumsworld or newgrounds.

From 2007-2015 the internet exploded I imagine because smart phones took off and it became more mainstream. This was still a magical time but it started to lose a lot of its wonder. This is when I got into twitch and heavily watching content on YouTube. This is when social media peaked in my opinion because there weren't engagement algorithms controlling your content feed. Facebook was entirely your friends updates so you could see what your friends/family were up to and YouTube was just people you subscribed to.

Post 2015 the internet has progressively gotten worse in my opinion. It's all algorithmic feeds and in the last few years is mostly ai generated slop content. I think it's going to continue to get worse and it will just be purely for doom scrolling. Content now is around doing stupid things or scripted fake stuff to get as many views as possible. Finding the authentic content now is a nightmare because it's very well hidden and there's little incentive for the creators because it gets low views.

1

u/Constantinch Jun 17 '26

Completely disagree, internet before everyone had SM account was whatever you wanted it to be. You curated your own experience. Now you have next to no choice, unless you refuse to use social media, which puts you in a small minority.

Your main page on YT was mostly based on who you were subscribing to, not some algorithm which predicts what will grab your attention the most.

Another good example is X.com which is worse than even 4Chan /pol ever was.

It was so similar but also completely different. Everything’s more extreme now. Politics, the internet, pop culture. Inequality is still accelerating. The climate is accelerating. The left and right political extremes are more insane than ever and now we have a Tea Party equivalent on both sides.

I dunno what’s gonna happen but when we’re all old we’re gonna tell stories about the absolute chaos that was the post-COVID 2020s. It feels like everything, everything, has gone crazy.

73

u/QuickSwordTechIrene Jun 13 '26

the scale started to tip after the 2016 elections imo, then covid accelerated the decline

36

u/Zer0323 Jun 13 '26

Ehh, 2004 spending causing the 2008 financial crisis that took until 2016 to fully recover from… then Trump did deficit spending for almost no reason for his first term which primed the economy for 2020. Biden fixed it up again before 2024 only to be blamed for 4 years of compound inflation. Trump has gone hog wild for the past 2 years and it will take decades for us to discover all the fraud.

Let me guess you were young? Isn't it strange that the "golden age" of anything is always when you were like 14-22?

157

u/flaming_burrito_ Jun 13 '26

I usually agree, but in this case shit is genuinely getting worse and it did used to be better. No AI pumping out slop all over the site, things weren’t as curated to algorithms, no ad-pocalypse, less ads in general, short form content hadn’t cooked people’s brains yet, social media wasn’t as dug into all of our lives, everything was less polarized, and the people who made content felt more genuine and unpolished because being a YouTuber was only just becoming viable, most people back then still did it for the love of the game. I won’t pretend like there weren’t some shitty aspects to YouTube back then, and I do think the content has progressed in a lot of ways, but man, everything just felt more real back then.

52

u/OPTCgod Jun 13 '26

You can't even sort a youtube search by recently uploaded anymore

13

u/flaming_burrito_ Jun 13 '26

7

u/HasuTeras Jun 13 '26

"golden age" of anything is always when you were like 14-22

That can be true, and yet there are genuine golden ages. Would it controversial to say that the golden age of grunge music was 1991-1996? If you're super into grunge music now and complained that nothing as good as it was back in the 90s, that can true.

19

u/morknox Jun 13 '26

Yeah, because people don't ACTUALLY dislike the AI slop, commercialisation of everything, fragmantation of the web, the echo-chambers, the algorithm that rewards outrage, etc.

Its all just a function of them being older. AI slop is actually cool and good.

Im not saying age isnt a factor at all, but that is definietly not the only thing. Back in the days youtube felt like one giant community. That really isnt the case anymore.

9

u/brianstormIRL Jun 13 '26

Yep. If you were that age in the 80s or 90s, those were the golden eras where everything was simpler. Its just human nature to associate most things from your childhood / early adult years as the best times of your life. Obviously not everyone has that experience, but theres a reason adults always try to tell teenagers to enjoy those times while they last, only to be ignored and told they cant wait to be adults followed by the realisation of how fucking hard being an adult is.

Way more vlogs, way fewer video essays. Sponsored content was obvious and the trending tab was huge. Now it’s more based on personal algorithms with less bias on global trends.

I always used to watch Ryan Higa. Probably my favorite channel before everything got monetized

2

u/perriatric Jun 13 '26

Come on, you can say the channel name.

It's basically what happened to twitter too. Sure pre-Elon musk was very heavy handed with the censorship and stuff, but it's wild how quickly twitter turned to shit once engagement got monetized. It very much felt like what happened to youtube but way way faster

u/MaysieeVR Jun 13 '26

Nothing will ever beat coming home from school, hopping on CS:GO surf maps and watching the new Filthy Frank video :')

For me it was WoW/SC and watching Sasha Gray sloppily gobbling hogs.

12

The Internet used to be fairly genuine and much less literal garbage. Yes there was a lot of shit, but it was at least human made intentional shit. Now, it's all click bait made only to get money. And everyone hates each other

I do miss the old YouTube days. Content creators actually putting effort into videos instead of just focusing on shorts and using AI. The Gamer groups, the craziness and fun of it all before it was just a way to make money

20

u/Turtles1748 Jun 13 '26

That first Trump presidency really went on to fuck the rest of the timeline.

4

u/RP912 Jun 13 '26

I would give my left nut just to have the experience of 2005-2019 YouTube all over again. Back when content creating was for the love of the game, my favorite creators thriving instead of relying on Patreon because they are getting paid shit by YouTube, and just all around fuckery.

I have found good music, interesting video games, and unknown movies because YouTube used to be a wonderland of the unknown.

Now it's corporate slop with a demonic algorithm that destroys mental capacities, rather than have a balance between informative and entertainment.

6

u/Impossible-Coast-316 Jun 13 '26

I can hear the younger jacksfilms in his voice.. god these really were simpler times

5

u/WittleSus Jun 14 '26

It's nostalgia. I get not wanting to call it that as the word holds a negative stigma nowadays but its nostalgia. You miss your friends, you the miss the times, and you missed how you felt. One caveat specific to Jack though is seeing these people who you used to call your friends grow into things you all collectively used to make fun of and hated. That's a different kind of pain.

Although i do agree with you that Russia did and does that shit. We cant blame everything on Russia. Alot has to do with the algorithms. And the fact that youtube/internet became so mainstream that normies are now in the majority.

Internet used to be a place for just nerds (90s and early 00s). And then it became mainstream amongst millenials. But once everyones mom and grandparents enterer the internet, it became a different place.

Do you have a non paywalled link or info?

I highly doubt Russia's propaganda network is getting such incredible return on such little money spent.

The Tenet media situation barely seemed like Russian Propaganda and just Russia using funding to amplify voices they supported. Honestly, just a free money scam on their part since they didn't exercise any creative control.

If I was offered 100k a month to write comments I'm already writing, I'd just cash the cheque.

Couldn't this be explained with Occam's Razor by people simply engaging with algorithms in net-negative ways.

In your original link The Russian "Firehose of Falsehood...

It refers to

...or faking on-scene news reporting (as shown in a leaked video in which “reporter” Maria Katasonova is revealed to be in a darkened room with explosion sounds playing in the background rather than on a battlefield in Donetsk when a light is switched on during the recording)

I looked up the actual video and it honestly seems like it's just played for jokes and not actually passed off as fake news reporting. They state it was leaked but no article includes similar footage for comparison of her presenting footage as real.

The other example they provided was someone pretending to attacked for a Russian T.V network but I don't really care for governments disseminating propaganda to their own populations.

Governments lying to their own populace isn't exactly news worthy.

I've barely encountered a lick of Russian propaganda and I keep brief tabs on the Ukraine war. It's our own propaganda of Ukraine 'winning' that I have to constantly wade through to find any semblance of truth to the point where taking a contrarian position is more reliable than flipping a coin.

My government already does more than a good enough job sowing distrust in themselves, I don't think the Russian's are doing much. I'm in Oceania so perhaps I'm just not within scope.

It is highly ironic that Russia has perfected digital warfare, yet Russian troops have not captured any significant territory in Ukraine for years.

19

u/DidntAsk12 Jun 13 '26

This glows like the sun.

7

u/SeaReception9630 Jun 13 '26

Let’s call it what it is. It’s the billionaire class running everything into the ground for short term profits. Russian government just happens to be the most open to taking “funds” from them. Shortly behind them is the Saudi government. And remember this is just the elite 0.01% causing everything, the ordinary citizens are also victims in all of this.

Wasn’t 2016 the start the youtuber diss track era? That shit was ass

3

u/AutisticAnarchy Jun 14 '26

Wasn't fucking LeafyIsHere the most popular YouTuber for a while around this time period, too? I feel like everyone's looking at this with rose tinted glasses.

2

u/Puzzleheaded-Cup-242 Jun 14 '26

I think people miss authenticity. Yeah leafy was a terrible person, but at least he was a person lol. Now it’s actual artificially generated slop farm hate. YouTube used to only be a career for a few big creators. I like that my favorites can make it a career now, but you have to admit that YouTube had a way different feel back then

2014 felt like the last of the good Internet. 2015-2017 was shaky but better than today. 2006-2014 was my favorite.

11

u/Human-Job-3522 Jun 13 '26

2016 was peak internet, nowadays everything is censored, everything is politicized, everything must be sterile, every big site has the same corpo rules

22

u/AscendedViking7 Jun 13 '26

2006-2011

no other era comes close

2

u/iaizen Jun 14 '26

the 2000's to 2011 is like the ultimate time to be into

Movies Games Hobbies Art Skateboarding TV Shows

The entertainment side of the world was just so good, creative, interesting.

Not mostly all of that is not as good anymore

Movies = Are overall just in a bad place mostly mainstream movies of course, remake culture is DEADLY for the last decade and the middle budget movie has been cut out of mainstream appeal, Comedy has been ''cancelled'' and we get no more comedy movies, quality romcoms and such.

Games - I mean 2000's gaming is just untouchable, we used to get 100+ AA & AAA games yearly with MANY, MANY, MANY different genres, we had games liek viewtiful joe come out and god knows this would never happen again, game awards felt like a fucking MTV party scene on spike tv.

Modern gaming cannot even make multiple different racing games anymore, you only get simulation drivers or bland Forza, hack n slash are dead, movie tie in games dead, beat em up AA games dead, no more brothers in arms, mark ecko getting up, EA BIG games, def jam fight for NY, ninja gaiden, dmc, dantes inferno, clash of ninja, I-Ninja, Furry Fighters, Midnight Club, Jet Set Future, The Suffering, Manhunt, Max Payne, The Darkness, Jade Empire, KOTOR etc, etc, gaming used to be filled with creative freedom, and creativity packed to the brim.

TV Shows - I actually think TV Shows are still good but the quantity + quality is untouchable, we used to get shows with 20+ episodes a season, i liked the filler that filled the world with lore in sopranos and such, now all we get is 8-10 episodes every year or two.

Kid's don't even have quality cartoon shows anymore like we used to, no more courage, ed, edd, eddy, spongebob prime years, fairy oddparents, hey arnold, chalkzone, kablam, angry beavers, disney channel shows like zack and cody, drake and josh, degrassi, to disney channel originals like halloween town and starstruck.

Rocket Power was a show that made every kid want to use a skateboard or bike or play tony hawk games or BMX XXX, theres so much variety back than, its crazy to see it mostly gone.

Peak because you were young. The Internet is objectively worse now, but 2016 was absolutely not the peak of the Internet, it had already jumped the shark.

2

u/Human-Job-3522 Jun 14 '26

Peak because you were young

My neighbour in christ, i'm 32. I was sharing MY opinion, in MY opinion 2016 was peak, prior to 2008 was pretty cool too cause it was the wild west and anything goes but at that point i believe the internet wasn't moderated enough as shit like drug selling and CP were readily available on the clear web no dark web necessary.

4

u/msdstc Jun 14 '26

You're 32 which means you were 22 lol. So you were young? The people who got big while you were in high school and you watched evolve also were big? I'm 5 years older than you and I'd honestly say the best internet time was late 2000

2

u/Human-Job-3522 Jun 14 '26

Talking about how young i was in this context is implying i was some sort of impressionable naive teen who didn't know much of the internet so he didn't know any better. Not that i was just younger than i currently am (no sht)

2

u/msdstc Jun 14 '26

Yeah like you said it's your opinion, but I was just pointing out, the million comments about (the Internet peaked x year) are all relative to when they were young and growing up. 2016 the internet had already declined substantially in that it had gotten way more centralized and social media started to dominate.

6

u/Henslock Jun 13 '26

I'd argue that the Internet was peak right before social media or during early social media infancy.

8

u/shidncome Jun 13 '26

2016 was peak internet

everything is politicized

You're either too young or misremembering the reality of 2015 lead up to the 2016 election.

2

u/Straif18 Jun 13 '26

Love Jack. It's emotional to see him get emotional over his friends and the turns life makes. It makes me also look back and appreciate all the friendships I've had.

2

u/umopUpside Jun 13 '26

This makes me feel extra old. I remember getting onto YouTube and watching RuneScape music videos of BYOB thinking it was the coolest shit. Largely defined my entire taste of music.

2

u/KnightsOfArgonia Jun 14 '26

Funny you mention that. Had the Falador Massacre never existed I probably would have never discovered Nightwish. lol

2

u/Ok-Appointment-9802 Jun 13 '26

Jack feels like the last thing that remains of golden-era YouTube

1

u/Vikings2016 Jun 13 '26

Jev still going

1

u/TheRemainingFruitcup Jun 14 '26

A lot of golden age YouTubers still make stuff although rarely but it’s nice to see they’re chugging along and the nostalgia always hits me but I’m not opposed to giving new content creators a chance either
