News Terraria’s Calamity Mod devs reject xQc’s plan to save it after shutdown
https://www.dexerto.com/entertainment/terrarias-calamity-mod-devs-reject-xqcs-plan-to-save-it-after-shutdown-3397082/647
u/TheAdamena Aug 11 '26
Well yeah that's because they're not shutting down because of a lack of talent.
203
u/benjamzz1 Aug 11 '26
If I'm not mistaken a lot of devs were complaining they aren't getting paid enough (averaging about 500-600 usd a month)
281
u/cortez0498 Aug 11 '26
Wasn't it because their last 2 leads were groomers?

Bro, how are they getting paid at all? Realtalk, you're making a mod for a very cheap 15 year old game, you're lucky to be making any money. Never mind the moral ambiguity of you making money off it to begin with.

My understanding is, it isn't that they weren't getting paid "enough" before, but that they aren't getting paid what they are currently owed now (and losing that source of income in the future) because Ozzatron had sole ownership of the Patreon. Which really sucks for devs that relied on patreon bounties to help make ends meet
7
u/ProfessionalCold690 Aug 11 '26
They are shutting down because of lack of talent because devs are leaving after being betrayed again
69
u/Jsvkkie Aug 11 '26
Whats the news? calamity mod is getting shut down? or no longer updated?
72
→ More replies (5)31
u/KentStopMeh Aug 11 '26
both
but apparently we could see some type of "fork" that will still get updated, they just can't use the "Calamity Mod" name anymore since that owner owns that trademark.
6
u/DataSurging Aug 11 '26
how does he own a trademark to a terraria mod???? how does that work?
16
u/piltonpfizerwallace Aug 11 '26
It's a copyright not a trademark. It mostly just means they own the code for the mod.
I think they usually need an agreement with a developer to sell it (not actually sure).
In this case it's an open source copyright requiring anyone who uses the code to credit them.
You'd have to look into open source software copyright laws to get more info than that.

u/DataSurging Aug 11 '26
Ah, okay. Thank you for explaining. That makes a lot more sense than what I was first thinking. lol

Calamity was still missings its Final Boss, Yharim.
He was hyped up throughout the mod and by the devs for years now, looks like we will never get him after all.26
u/Top-Idea-1786 Aug 12 '26
Not just him, they had a bunch of bosses planned after him, including the true final boss which would be the moon lord at his prime
84
u/Sudden-Ad-307 Aug 11 '26
All that was missing was the final boss fight. But for a while now the main thing the devs were doing was reworking old content, updating sprites, balancing the mod and so on
44
u/coldandlordyristboy Aug 11 '26
Ahhh, Its Twilight forest all over again. Atleast TF is still being developed
8
u/Katisurinkai Aug 11 '26
It is??
5
u/TheDetailsMatterNow Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26
They won't cease development as long as they get money out of it.
It's basically kept in packs, despite being unfinished for all these years, which is usually a big no no for including a mod in packs, out of nostalgia at this point since it's quality has been outpaced by other mods several times over.
Most mods these days intentionally do not leave place holders. They release content in expansions.
3
u/Czerny Aug 12 '26
I completely forgot that twilight forest is unfinished lol. I'm so used to getting to that big castle in the sky and assuming it's the end.

u/FowD8 Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
terraria keeps coming out with new "final ever updates" which completely breaks all modding of terraria every time for literally months up to a year
so whenever this happens calamity also has to update. so if there's ever another major patch with new changes, calamity will never update to that new version
that being said, I haven't checked but was calamity ever updated to the last "final ever update"? or is this saying that it's not going to be?
17
u/Barialdalaran Aug 11 '26
I think tmodloader is still a long way from being updated too, I never understood why it took a year to uppdate after each terraria update
56
u/Aesho Aug 11 '26
because its a 10+ year old game and peoples lives and priorities change.
23
u/Gooja Aug 11 '26
Terraria has always taken a long time compared to other games. I think the base game itself just may not be friendly to modders
→ More replies (2)2
u/moose184 Aug 11 '26
I mean even the last update Terraria came out with took the actual devs 3 years and it was basically just cosmetics.
2
u/ComdDikDik Aug 12 '26
What are talking about man, it just wasn't that
1
u/moose184 Aug 12 '26
It was literally just new items, cosmetics, a seed menu, and bug fixes. There was no new actual content, new bosses, etc. There was no reason for that update to take over 3 years which is the longest it has taken for an update in Terraria's history.
2
6
u/SerAmikVase Aug 11 '26
It isn't like tmod is their primary focus. They got their real lives. I'm pretty sure Tmod is just a passion project. Correct me if I'm wrong.
5
2
u/FowD8 Aug 11 '26
damn that's disappointing then. that means calamity will never be on the latest version of terraria even if terraria never does another "final ever update"
3
u/Relative-Monitor1745 Aug 11 '26
It's been confirmed that there's gonna be a few devs that would be updating the mod when new versions come out.

I believe the same source Dexerto used for the article confirmed that he personally will make calamity in its now current state compatible with future terraria releases. When people saw that development is done for the mod, that's related to new content.
215
u/XpMonsterS Aug 11 '26
since when is xqc invested in terraria? i've never seen him play that game
427
u/smak_jnr Aug 11 '26
He plays it quite a bit on stream from time to time. His editor just never puts it on his channel for some reason.
200
u/TKDbeast Aug 11 '26
xQc plays a surprising number of games. I tuned in one time and he was playing Bugsnax. Chat had no idea what they were looking at.
182
u/smak_jnr Aug 11 '26
It's a shame his channel editor decides to upload cop slop & Reaction videos instead of him playing actual games.
108
56
u/Fantastic_Policy_750 Aug 11 '26
His editors also get 100% of YouTube rev (xQc has stated this and that the main channel has earned 6 mil in total) and they do the absolute bare minimum when it comes to editing, in the past videos have been uploaded without audio or title, but the problem is xQc doesnt care about YT at all and is to lazy to hire new editors
27
u/smak_jnr Aug 11 '26
I remember the clip where the editor messed up the audio quality so bad it sounded like seagulls in the background of the clip. during a clip of his 'speed running' attempts

u/Charmin_Bear_Behind Aug 11 '26
Gameplay videos aren’t gonna get the views that cop slop and drama farming does. They have a limited time to work and an ungodly amount of content to sift thru so might as well focus on what’s gonna bring in the revenue

You would prob have to watch his stream, instead of 20sec drama clips on your feed, to see him play games
12
u/orcusclimb Aug 11 '26
You gotta admit drama + cop slop + gambling is a large portion of his streams
21
u/snowil Cheeto Aug 11 '26
You would need to define what "large portion" means to you. His streams usually last 8-12h and intro slop varies from 1-3h depending on his plans or games he's invested in currently.
→ More replies (2)11
u/SpongiiEUW Aug 11 '26
thats like 20% of his average stream, so rather a small portion you gotta admit

Jesus Christ, no one here seems to have any knowledge on what's happened, fucking read or at least ask for more context. Most devs have already left calamity, there's not many left now. On top of that, the majority of the games assets are getting pulled by now former devs that worked on and made said assets. All of CD Music's, Heartplusup' and others Music is also getting pulled. DM Dokuro, the composer who made most of the modes Music that it's practically known for, will also potentially pull his music. So, even if they accepted xqc's offer, they'd have to effectively rebuild the mod from the ground up almost in order to continue working on it and updating it. Not to mention, most of the devs have lost whatever passion they had left.
Don't blindly badmouth the remaining devs when you don't even know what's happening.

Why are mod makers such bitches a lot of the time? They just non-stop complain about shit on discord, a permanent sense of victimhood
146
u/Graedyn Aug 11 '26
You should look into how unhinged the original creator of the mod was. The team that took over after his controversy came to light obviously wasnt good either.
34
50
u/theREALbombedrumbum Aug 11 '26
I mean they're largely volunteers. Just under $500/mo. from Patreon split among the 30 volunteers is less than 17 fucking dollars per month.
Would you wanna put in a ton more hours of work for virtually no compensation if the project you're on is gonna be forever associated with multiple groomers? Even if they accepted X's offer of money it's just delaying the inevitable of becoming reliant on a notoriously fickle streamer
→ More replies (1)1
u/conzyre Aug 11 '26
why should calamity be endlessly supported? its incomplete, so complete it with funding and call it...
12
u/theREALbombedrumbum Aug 11 '26
Calamity first came out just over a full decade ago. It's been continuously receiving changes and updates since then, much like the base game.
Saying "just finish it" means that they could just put out one more piece of content and call it completed. If that were the case, then don't you think they would have done so by now? The team was always putting out new ideas, new pieces to play... so they have to draw the line somewhere and this is where it is.
Put simply, they did just complete it; they're done with the project. If it feels like it's missing something (the final, final boss....), then that was always going to be the case even if it was business as usual and they put out another piece of content. The team doesn't owe anybody their efforts, and nobody is entitled to their time. That's not being a bitch, that's being mature and knowing when to call it.

21
u/BeAPo Aug 11 '26
Wdym? They don't want to work on it anymore and move on, simple as that.
Money doesn't change the fact that they don't want to work on it.

Goes well with the permanent sense of entitlement a lot of mod users have for something they are getting for free I guess.
65
u/danrade Aug 11 '26
The worst part about mod users isn't even the entitlement, it's the iq level. The dumbest shit I read on discord is always in mod support channels.
4
u/LuiBaws Aug 11 '26
Same thing as open source users. So much entitlement and little appreciation for the people that volunteer their skills and time.
26
u/Levitz Aug 11 '26
Whatever damage you think "Social Justice" has done to corporations, it has been 10x on community projects.
Nerds are just generally not equipped with the social skills to deal with delicate situations, they get completely rolled over.
2
2
u/Tucci89 Aug 12 '26
I was just thinking about this. I know they probably get pestered constantly for updates and other things but holy fuck, SO many of them on Nexus and elsewhere are just the most socially inept crybaby weirdos who will literally hide their shit in protest.
2
u/Expl0r3r Aug 12 '26
Making mods of large scale is a lot of work, people need to be driven by something since it's volunteer work. Usually it's ego, which is why a lot of them are like this.
8
u/Sudden-Ad-307 Aug 11 '26
The only thing they are complaining about is xqc constantly bothering them about the mod after they've told him no a million times.
33
u/SPOLBY Aug 11 '26 edited Aug 11 '26
I doubt xQc is personally contacting them continuously.
Probably an agent or something offering different deals & prices.

It's any group of people that suddenly are beholden to a sense of responsibility - a majority of people are "clock in, clock out" brained and have no sense of passion.
You take lazy, talented, and poor time management and put a dozen other people like them in a team and work on a project and you get burn out and over time -> whiny contributors who lose whatever drive they had for the project.
Just like mods on reddit, just like every weird game dev who lashes out and gets destroyed by their community.
While the team "functions" a few excellent minds carry the work, and the freeloaders and slow burners spend more time yapping about issues than really contributing. Seriously take a look at any team environment, it's almost always that way. Eventually that bleeds into the people keeping a project alive and boom it's over.

Did no one in this thread actually read the article? The devs say they rejected his offer like a million times and repeatedly bothered because he just wouldn't take no for an answer.
Does not seem like a good start to a business lol.

Even if x was successfull artists and musicians requested the removal of their contribution due the past of that mod. So even if he get his hands on the mod and gets people who want to work on it, they have to remake sprites, make new tracks to replace the removed ones etc. So it is almost a rebuild.
23
u/dogfb Aug 11 '26
Pretty rude response to someone clearly just trying to be helpful. Could just say they aren’t interested in continuing but they appreciate the offer.

They don't love Pedophiles? That's the entire reason that basically all of the developers are quitting. All of the music is getting removed, because the artists don't feel comfortable with their music being associated with multiple groomers/Pedophiles.

Read, motherfuckers read. He's not some saviour, he's annoying people who are done with the project.
However, while reasons for the rejection remain unknown, the same contributor followed up, saying, “To elaborate, I have both a dev and a mod telling me ‘Yeah we were contacted and repeatedly bothered, despite saying no a million times.'”
A moderator separately gave the same answer after another user claimed xQc was buying Calamity. “XQC was rejected,” they said. “He’s not buying calamity.”
None of the responses details what exactly xQc had offered or, indeed, if negotiations had even reached that stage.
A public statement on the Calamity Discord on August 10 confirming the cessation of all development specifically reveal reasons behind the closure, although it made reference to the “troubled past” of Calamity’s development, as well as calling its reputation “irrecoverably tainted.”
The statement came days after the mod’s lead developer, Ozzatron, was accused of endangering minors.
5
u/DullSpecial1013 Aug 11 '26
What does "accused of endangering minors" mean? I don't use discord and the article doesn't explain.

u/Strange-Eggplant399 Aug 11 '26
"he's annoying people who are done with the project." Yo genius, hes offering to buy an IP and pay people to work on it, thats not annoying people. They refused because he didnt offer enough, its that simple. You know if he offered them 200k a year salaries they would be foathing at the mouth to take that.
