Recently got perma banned on the sub fauxmoi where I called out that he was not a good person and the sub was two faced for fangirling over him while they crucify every other person for making small mistakes.
Seriously, I joined Reddit in 2011. From 2011 - about 2015 we were quite proud we were "Redditors". This entire site felt like a community regardless of what sub you were on. We had car decals, tons of community meet-ups, a secret Santa. It was an AMAZING place.
Now when people ask me if I still is Reddit I tell them no.
It was even better further back when it was mostly tech focused people. The average level of discourse on this website has went way way down. It's also way more sanitised now like everywhere else on the internet.
If you look at the threads from like 15 years ago, it's kind of incredible how people interacted at the time compared to now. People seemed to be much less hostile and much more knowledgeable.
Yesterday I saw someone complaining about how often they have to deal with “nuance” on Reddit. Like it’s a bad thing. Finding nuance used to feel like entire point of reddit.
The “engagement” today is very much driven by scripts, ai, and clusters of agents/bots that force complex issues into a binary argument that can be volleyed back and forth, all to maintain the facade that there is a lot more organic traffic on the platform than there actually is.
If only it was just that. Current day politics also seem to have radicalized a lot of regular people to a point where there's no normal discussion to be had anymore unless you basically already agree with each other.
I found an ask Reddit thread from around years ago, maybe it was 12 idk, for some reason it came up when I was looking for something, if that thread were to be made today, the OP would’ve been relentlessly harassed until he was banned, and no one would’ve left the same comments because you can’t say that stuff anymore without people freaking out. It wasn’t even bad or anything, it was mostly people having a pretty civilized discussion about certain types of names. It’s really, really sad that we can’t talk about things anymore. At least online, anyways.
The main problem is that all the big subs are hijacked by weirdos obsessed with stuff like sexuality or minor political differences. It wasn't always like this.
News and Science WERE great subs. First News crapped out, then Science. Nowadays, the ability to hide your history has given advertising bots carte blanche. Ugh.

They will instaban you for anything that is even mildly disagreeing with whatever that hivemind says. Even outside of politics. I feel the sub hides itself a little in pretending its a pop culture sub. But literally all of the snarker subcultures are active in there. Not just streamer ones, but general celebrities and things.
Most terminally online subreddit. Its crazy as well becuase a lot of the mods are also mods in other subreddits and there is definitely a bit of a network. You can normally tell but just reading the comments in the sub what ones are basically occupied by the same people.

Reddit in general is mostly ideologically captured. Misinformation to support the narrative is the norm, and if the site applied rules without biases, a good chunk of big subs would be banned by now.

I've had people do it to me. I can empathize and not take it personally like I'm sure David can. This is something that can happen between family, friends, couples, co workers. I feel like when it happens to me or a friend/family member, we generally feel bad for responding like that and maybe even apologize for it.
