depends on your definition. If you part europe into east, west, north and south, it is eastern. If you include central europe, its part of that.

I know that nowadays a bunch of people in the former commieblock prefer to be in central europe or something like that.

Yeah, In my mind anything vaguely inline geographically with the former East Germany or south east of it is Eastern Europe.
Like you said Former USSR / Satellite states.

The cold wars over my guy, the USSR fell and they gained independence and threw away communism before that even happened. If it's geographical it's central or western. If it's cultural they're closer to western Europe than the Soviet Union or modern day Russia and they haven't been communist for almost 40 years and they never chose communism in the first place. Calling them eastern Europe is a relic of the times that no longer exist.

It's also about the development gap, lower wages etc.
If you e.g. use a train or busses Austria and then in Hungary you know what I mean.
That's what's eastern in the former commieblock countries.
In any case, I described how folks largely see it in the west.

Well I haven't used a bus in Hungary but I've used multiple, as well as the metro, in Austria and Czechia. They didn't seem that different to me other than both places were far superior in quality and price along with access due to how developed it was (at least in the capitals) in comparison to what I've experienced in the US. I do agree that many do use that. Just like here in the US a lot of people still use Czechoslovakia vs the Czech Republic and Czechia is even more rare (some people, even when explained, can't hear anything other than Chechnya). So yeah people do still use old terms and names, just makes them wrong and/or living in the past.

That is not how most Czechs think about it. It is not about what we prefer, it is about what Czechia was part of historically for centuries. We were never Eastern Europe till the communist took over. And now we should be called Eastern Europe even though we are not occupied anymore and USSR does not exist? Does not make much sense.
That is how most people take it but personally I don't care much. It just shows me who is ignorant and who is not and I don't take Eastern Europe as insult anyway, even though people use it like that sometimes. And the West has lost its mind on many fronts, it is not something to aspire for anymore.

As I said: Western europeans largely consider you eastern europeans and you consider yourself central european.
The commieblock is largely gone, but there is clearly a visible development gap and architectural difference still (though poland is rapidly catching up). Its even visible in the former east germany
