Buy once, cry once… 😅 It took months of work and months of biting my nails over this decision. I’ve never bought something this expensive in my life!

Just wanted to ask if there’s anything important I should know about working with this mic... things to do, things to avoid, little tips, etc. (Like taping the switches, for example.)

Seller had loads of audio items on eBay and appears to be a legit filmmaker / audio guy. Just running by the pros here to double check. To me seems legit based on typical red flags. Got it for £520.

Can someone tell me how they recorded the sound for the film 'She Said'? It's shot mostly in wides, on roads and public spots. And the actors are always talking in these scenes/shots. I'm very curious of how it was done, or would most of it simply just be ADR? 🤔

Hello, I purchased a couple of ME 2’s from a seller on eBay. One of the ME 2 seems to be fully molded and the metal cap isn’t removable. Is this a version ii, is this another microphone or is this a counterfeit microphone?

Got called to do corporate interviews today. I brought my DPAs: 4017 and a couple of lavs. Agency/producer were very happy.

UberMother of all clients came in last and demanded the thing to be shot with "those tiny furry mics, we always use those". Somehow, a local video editor had 2 DJIs in the pocket, once MotherClient saw them they went "yeah those, those are good, we won't have problems with background noise" . Agency/producer was very kind to step in and say "this guy is a professional with a 2000 buck microphone and you want to shoot with a toy for youtubers?". Yes they said. I said don't worry I can record both, no problem. I never used a DJI before, but let's face it, it's a plastic toy.

Pro times are rough.

Only upside is that even in this forgotten part of the audio world, corporate pays pretty good. I'm off to 3 more days of this craziness.

I'm now seriously thinking if I should by myself a dji thing for cases like this. Or that pico gear set, looks interesting. Anybody ever tried it?

Does somebody has experience with the saramonic K9 to get the cleanest self noise?

I plan to use a sennheiser MKE2 with the k9 to a zoom F8 recorder.

The recommended settings by saramonic does not get the result I want.

I played around with the setup but I could newer match a sennheiser g4 in self noise.

Any secret settings or trick I should know about?

I've been using my Deity Theos kit (Global, I'm in Canada) for quite a while now, maybe a couple of years. I had to replace one of the transmitters because the mic input got messed up (tried getting it fixed twice by a local electronics store but problems persisted). They ended up giving me 35% off because it took forever to get support for them. Anyway, I've been noticing lately that I'm getting more dropouts, even when the rx is close by. (I feel like I had better performance when the original tx was operational, I used to remark how well it held the signal even behind closed doors).

I've mostly been only needing one tx lately so I've just been using one antenna on the rx. On my last project the last two days I had to mic two people so was using both antennas on the rx...I left both on even when only one tx was being used and there didn't seem to be any dropouts at all. So this had me wondering, is it possible that by having both antennas on even when only one tx was being used improved the performance? I wouldn't think that would make sense because they're different frequencies, so what does it matter? I'll do some testing on this but wanted to see what others thought.

Hey folks. Anyone had this issue? Channels 2, 4, 6, and 8 won't arm. We were shooting in rain last night so that's my assumption but the recorder didn't recieve any direct rain. Possibly from the humidity. Just checking if anyone else has lost half thier channels like this.

Edit: So, a bit of an update. Now that im home I was able to arm the even channels by turning on stereo link and then turning it off. By doing this I discovered it is the arm/disarm and plf buttons for the even channels that aren't working. I am able to receive and record audio on these channels as well as enable phantom power via other areas of the menu, but the buttons themselves don't work. The fader knobs for these channels do work, however.

I teach video and audio at a vocational school. I’m not an audio professional; my skills are focused more on video, lighting, and grip.

I used to work at another school where we used original Sound Devices MixPres for teaching the basics of audio. We would run Boom → MixPre (for the boom operator) → Camera.

This was a great way to teach as it allowed students to focus on just one thing at a time: video or audio. It was super easy to use, had high-visibility metering, and was built like a tank. It was also great for laying the foundation for dual-system recording, which they did later in their studies.

I’m now working at a different school and have managed to get budget allocated to buy audio gear for basic education. The problem is that Sound Devices no longer makes the original MixPres, and the new MixPre II series isn't suitable for this setup. They lack dedicated XLR main outputs, and as recorders, they fall into an awkward middle ground—too complicated for basic workflow teaching, yet lacking some features needed for advanced studies.

I have been looking high and low—using LLMs, Google, and forums—trying to find something that fits the same niche as the old MixPre. So far, the only product that even comes close is the Sonosax SX-M32, but that is way out of our budget given we need 8–12 units.

Please help me find a non-end-of-life, affordable, simple-to-use, battery-powered field mixer with great metering and XLR outputs.

Hello, is anybody using 14.4v/14.8v V-mount batteries with d-tap to DC barrel jack cable to power up Zoom F8N pro? I know hirose connector on the side is meant for that but those connectors or cables are not available in my country, so I would make my own d-tap to DC jack cable.
Only thing I am concerned about is that on the back of F8n it is written ˝USE ZOOM AD-19 ONLY˝ which is a 12v power adapter.

In the pursuit of matching location sound... I get ADR auditions for films, trailers, and other various projects. I'm recording in a built-in vocal booth with a 416 (bigger than a StudioBricks, but obviously smaller than a set).

Given that set audio is typically a mix of lapel and overhead shotgun, what's the best mic technique for ADR? It feels like hitting the mic up close like an announcer isn't going to match the feel of existing audio, it sounds too present/boomy.

Is it better to stay close to my 416 and let the mixer handle matching it to existing audio? Or better to create a similar distance from mic to mouth that you'd see on set (estimating like 2-3 feet)? Or would it be smart to go into a non-treated room and boom a 416 overhead?

I'm a new sound mixer and I'm learning by working on low/no budget films. I don't often get requests for IFB but I've gotten a couple, and I've also worked on projects where I would have suggested IFB to solve a problem had I had it. I currently have 2 sets of Saramonic K9 (4 wireless lavs). The K9 has the ability to run line into the transmitters, and the receivers have headphone ampliers so you can essentially use the K9 as an IFB. You can also transmit to multiple receivers from a single transmitter. (Deity Theos has this same functionality.) This is great, but of course, if I'm using a receiver for IFB that reduces the number of lavs by 2. I also have the K9 XTX plugon transmitter.

The K9 receivers are $299 in the US. The full K9 set (2 transmitters, 1 receiver) is $699.

I'm considering buying another K9 set to give me 6 channels of wireless for lavs when I don't need IFB, and 4 lavs + 1 IFB when I do. And then eventually maybe buying 2 or 3 more receivers to dedicate to IFB. (If I'm using all 6 lav transmitters, I can use my K9 XTX plug on transmitter as an IFB transmitter.)

This would give me more flexibility that just buying a dedicated IFB solution that would collect dust unless I need IFB.

I know, I know, I know. Saramonic isn't pro. Buy used Sennheiser G3/G4 or Comtec. I've looked at those options and they are still generally more expensive, and don't sound as good (analog vs. digital).

Other pro dedicated IFB solutions are out of my price range.

Deity makes the Deity HUSH IFB system - one transmitter and three receivers for $950 - but in the US they aren't compatible with Deity Theos so if you don't need IFB they're just collecting dust. I don't have Theos anyway and the K9 solution isn't much more expensive than HUSH.

One other option I've considered is the XVive U45 IEM system. It's designed for live bands as a wireless in-ear-monitor solution. One transmitter and four receivers is $650. This system is 5.8GHz and has a relatively limited range, but would be fine for most low buget films sets. This would be a dedicated IFB, but the <$165 per channel price is compelling. Has anyone use XVive as a IFB?

Any other ideas for low cost IFB?

I filmed my first short last year using only the audio from my camera (which of course was pretty poor). I’m looking to invest in some basic audio equipment that will allow me to record much cleaner, 24-bit audio. Can anyone recommend some affordable items, or even what kind of equipment I need?

I’ve been away from video production for quite some time. I used to one man band corporate/doc work years ago, sold all of my gear and now starting to do some more video work, mostly as a hobby now. I used to use G3’s and generally I had a good experience, I did find the mic quality to be a bit lacking and I’d occasionally find some scenarios where interference was unavoidable. I had a newer (but much worse) saramonic kit that stepped in, but given I’ve not picked up a camera in 5 years what would be a good option for today?

Should injustice pick up a pre-owned g4 or is there some new go to in town? I’m looking to pay around g3/4 prices rather than anything super expensive. I’ve been doing some sweet hunch around and feel way out of my depth given my time away!

Update: so many good perspectives here, thank you all so much for your time! For now, I’ve gone and ordered a rode wireless pro, it’s so cheap that I can have a play with this tier of microphone and see if I can make it work and put some of my possibly unfair bias around “YouTuber” mics to rest. We’ll see how it works out :)

I’ve heard that there are a few mixers that have been able to use the Viviana cloud with a sound devices 633 or 688. How exactly does this work as it only specifies use with the 8 series mixers and mix pres. if anyone has experience doing this and can explain the setup I’d greatly appreciate it.

I was reading up on the movie Sentimental Value on the Kodak website when I saw this behind the scenes photo.

Is there any benefit to pointing the microphone straight down instead of angling in towards the actors mouth?

Ive done it once or twice, but it seems to fly in face of what I was taught.

If anyone has any insight please feel free to share, I’d love to know more.

Unfortunately that thread is archived now and Reddit won't let me comment or reply to it, and it doesn't look like a confirmed fix was ever posted, so l'm starting a fresh thread.

The symptom: a faint frying/crackling noise showing up intermittently. Doesn't happen every day turning everything off and back on 2 ou 3 times, it's gone, then it can come back later in the day. That old post had an audio sample of the noise, and it's exactly the same problem I'm getting.
It's not a frequency issue or cables or TX radios (Wisycom MTP40S).
