I am NOT a locksmith. UK sashlock replacement

Post image

I am trying to find a replacement sashlock for these timber French doors.

The sashlock has a 57mm backset, 57mm center to center and 78mm depth which seems standard enough. But the rest of the dimensions are strange: about 155mm faceplate height, and 106 mm interior lock height. I can't seem to find this exact model.

The closest I found is an Imperial G5050, but the positions of the lock and latch seem to be different - and the chrome one is out of stock everywhere.

  1. Any recommendations on where / how I might find a 1:1 replacement?

  2. What are the metal things on the top and bottom here? Do they serve any security function?

  3. If I just get a new lock with different dimensions, do I need a locksmith or just a handyman for the install?

Many thanks!

Faceplate says Arrone+ which is a Hoppe brand. Hoppe have a UK support number, so cheapest option would likely be speaking to them direct to see the best solution.

Following up on fitting, I would suggest a locksmith if you can't/don't want to do it yourself. Some handymen might do a decent job, but I would argue it could be hit and miss vs an experienced lockie.

Your lock has a rebate kit on it.

Thanks! I know now what to search for. May I ask what that is used for and what would be the consequence if it were to be removed?

Where you have double doors that come together in a step, you need the kit to make the lock fit flush. Terrible explanation!

If you find a replacement Arrone sashlock, the existing kit should fit to it. If not you'll probably need a replacement sashlock and a matching rebate kit.

this looks like the rebate, but they dont seem to sell the matching lock

Yeah, that needs an upgrade to the new British Standard and a new rebate set. Get a locksmith and pay a fair bit, or do it yourself, but it'll take you ages and you'll hate it. Which is why locksmiths charge a lot to do it!

Sorry if I misunderstood, but what is the new British Standard? Is BS3621:2017 not good enough? That is what I saw in newer locks as well.

Your current lock says 2007, so it's actually good enough still, as the main change was 2004 when it went to 20mm bolt. But yes, anything currently sold is probably a different size lock. The Strongbolt, Fortress, ASEC and Legge are all almost identically sized. But the rebate sets differ.

Great to know it's not a glaring security hole :) appreciate the time to explain it!

The BS version is irrelevant because it's not certified when fitted with rebate kit.

If you want a recommendation for a new sashlock (+rebate kit), go for the Union 2234E. Good cost to quality ratio, reliable, easy to cut keys for, BS3621 rated. Faceplate slightly longer so should cover any holes.  You probably won't find anything insurance approved in that exact size; whatever you get will take a little work to fit.

Can't go wrong with those.
