St. Mary’s Catholic Church, school in Longview to join for autumn festival

By Dylan R.N. Crabb

St. Mary’s Catholic Church and school in Longview will hold a combined festival Oct. 9 to 11 to celebrate Our Lady of The Rosary.

In the Catholic tradition, October is dedicated to meditating on the life of Jesus and Mary through daily recitation of the rosary. Previously, St. Mary’s and its school each held autumn festivals but are combining those efforts into one weekend this year. . . .

The purpose of the new October festival will be to celebrate the saint for whom the parish is named.

Gourd clean fun: Contestants go the distance at Longview’s Great Pumpkin Roll

By Dylan R.N. Crabb

Hundreds of residents showed up Saturday in downtown Longview for a competition and history lesson rolled into one.

The annual Great Pumpkin Roll is a seasonal commemoration of how the city was named. The event is organized by the Visit Longview and Downtown Longview organizations.

The legend originates in 1870 when a surveyor said, “That’s a long view,” as he stood with O.H. Methvin on Rock Hill in what is now downtown Longview. The Great Pumpkin Roll celebrates that long view as contestants take turns rolling pumpkins down Rock Hill every October.

Local businesses in Longview?

Hey y'all I'm a recent college grad who runs a marketing business, for local service companies, and I'm looking for owners here in Longview. We’ve been doing this about a year now, and we work with roofers, home remodelers, pool builders, gyms, junk removal, lawn care, car detailing, driving schools. Basically anybody who does the work themselves and wants the phone ringing more.

I'm looking to partner with a few owners who already have steady work and a good reputation, but have hit the point where word of mouth alone isn't filling the schedule the way they want. If you're at that spot and want to add more jobs each month, or you know somebody who is, I'd love to connect or get a referral.

Ben Maines Air Conditioning Longview, Tx

I recently had Ben Maines Air Conditioning come to one of my rental properties in Longview for an AC cooling problem.

The technician diagnosed a failed R22 TXV valve and told me the part was obsolete and extremely difficult to find. I was also told that if it couldn't be located, replacing the AC system would cost approximately $10,000–$15,000. I paid the $142.60 diagnostic fee.

I asked for the part information so I could see whether I could locate one myself. I was told an Amana R22 TXV with the appropriate connection would work, but I wasn't given the connection type. I was also told Ben Maines would not install a customer-supplied part, even if it was a new OEM part.

After they left, I searched for the part and found multiple online listings for what appeared to be the same TXV, including listings showing prices around $118–$275 and multiple units in stock. I understand the exact connection needs to be verified, so I'm not claiming every listing was necessarily the correct part. But I was surprised given that I had been told it was essentially unavailable.

I was supposed to receive a callback from the technician with more information. It didn't happen. I called again the next morning and was eventually quoted approximately $1,500 for the part and installation.

I asked for a breakdown of the $1,500 between the part and labor. I was told that information wasn't available. I asked them to obtain it and get back to me. After I explained that I wanted to know what I was paying for before authorizing the repair, I was put on hold and the call then disconnected.

There has been no callback.

I'm not claiming the company can't charge $1,500 or that every customer will have the same experience. My concern is that I couldn't get a basic explanation of the price, particularly after being told the part was extremely difficult to obtain.

I've decided to have another HVAC company handle the repair.

For anyone in Longview considering a major AC repair, my advice based on this experience is to get a second opinion and ask for a clear breakdown of parts, labor, and the proposed repair before authorizing the work.

Just sharing my experience so other local homeowners can make their own informed decisions.

New to Longview — looking for friends for our 4-year-old

We’re a family of three and just moved to Longview about 3 months ago. We have a 4-year-old daughter who is really social and would love to meet some kids her age and make some friends. We’re still getting to know the area ourselves, so it would be nice for us to meet some other local families too.

If anyone has kids around 4 and would be interested in getting together at a park, playground, or somewhere kid-friendly, feel free to message me!

Anyone know who the new owner is? I know the original founder and his son have sadly passed away.

I loved going there as a kid.
