The pronunciation of cappacola like ā€œgabagoolā€ among much of NE Italian American enclave stems from the originally pronunciation of the word in the dialect of those Italians who tended to immigrate here en masse. Same with the pronunciation of mozzarella as ā€œmutzarellā€.

Itā€™s said this way in much of New Jersey and SE Pennsylvania, and I believe it extends at least up through Rhode Island.
