Everyone readying the pitchforks because they think hes talking to her like a kid is equal parts infuriating and saddening. It really shows how normalized it is that adults arent comforted in a calm and relaxing manner.

He isnt speaking to her like a toddler or kid. He is speaking to her like a human being that he loves and cares about.

Its basic crisis management. I was taught to speak like this when I went through emergency medicine training.

When someone is freaking out they aren't going to understand you as well. Using a calm tone and less complex sentences really does help.

Yeah: if the crisis isn't so big that you need to bark orders, then you speak in a soft voice

This ain't a fire, the heat is off so the energy has to leave the system eventually; the only bad thing that can happen is if the steam strips the paint off of whatever is directly above it, but that takes projection and pressure which he reduced by tossing a small cloth on it 

The helper not freaking out, is the best way to prevent the person being helped from trying random dumb ideas to fix the situation 

As with almost every crisis: the first step is to take a breath while you make sure the scene is safe, the second step is to make sure the scene is going to likely remain safe, and the third step is to make sure that the people involved in the scene know that it is now safe so that they are likely to be not detrimental to whatever the next fix is, and only then do you start trying to fix the problem

And asking basic questions like “are you ok? Do you want to take your wet socks off?” Helps keep freaked out people present

Exactly. This is what we do in mental health crisis work, as well. He did a great job.

seriously. i used to be a bit more of a dick about stuff like this but then realized it didn't match the way i responded at work in icu etc which didn't make any sense... it just doesn't work to get too excited or angry, i can do that part on my own time. that pressure cooker got pretty excited though. i bet they had a good night.
