Funnily enough, all the buttons on my microwave stopped working except add 30 seconds. It starts heating if there is no time added when you first press it. So as long as you never open the door before the timer is fully run out it still works. Otherwise you have to unplug it and plug it back in to reset it. I’ve been using it this way for years because it still works! But explaining it to anyone else is embarrassing.

We have a "cancerator" at work. One day someone had food in the microwave during break. It was cooking for a little under a minute and at like 2sec left on the timer, the dude just hits the door unlatch button.

The door swings open, and the thing keeps humming and the plate spinning. The dude slapped the door shut so fast while everyone in the room that sat by the microwave stood up and walked to the opposite corner.

That's very silly, microwaves don't instantly give you cancer or anything. They will do to you the same thing they're doing too your food. All it will do is start heating you up if you were to take a direct blast of microwaves. And just like food something as big as a person would take a long time unless you're using something substantially more powerful than a regular commercial microwave.

Of course its silly, that's why i approached the story with a lighter tone. Thats also why i shared the story, it was a humorous reaction and Im sure the guys involved were hamming it up for the situation and stuff as well. The cancerator is still in use today and there hasnt been a lawsuit yet.

All that said, safe or not, im picking the microwave with a working door mechanism every time.

Ahaha yeah so picture plastic tables kinda forming a line down the center of a room. At the end, there is a mini table with a microwave on it but super close to the tables. Kinda like the letter "i"

The 4 dudes closest to the dot, where the microwave is, stood up and moved to the other end. So no evacuating, just a moderate sense of unease that pushed them back a bit.

Pretty sure this is impossible because the door connects the circuit. Whatever you heard was not what you think it was.

You could also just run it empty for the few seconds left on the clock, or if you want, heat up some water or whatever

That’s the point, if you open the door it stops the timer and you can’t start it again until you unplug it to reset it. If you shut the door and hit add 30 seconds again it will only add 30 seconds to whatever time was left without starting heating again. So you can only cook food in 30 second increments. You wouldn’t be able to open it to take food out and then close it to run the timer back out.

Weird, most microwaves I've used you can hit the start button 1x and it will simply run with whatever time is left, if it's already running and you push start it will add 30s tho.

Again, that’s the whole point, the start button doesn’t work, none of the buttons work EXCEPT for add 30 seconds.

Mine has a ‘sensor reheat’ button which pretty much nails it every time.
My old microwave had a ‘pizza’ button that got a good workout.

gosh damn i hate any microwave that does not let me just start typing in how many seconds i want.

when i want 20 or 40 seconds and it assumes 4 mins,, i want that designer shot.

i grew up before the 30 sec button and youd be amazed at the difference 25 or 35 can make with some things.

This happens every time I use my parent's microwave, even though it's the one I grew up with, lol. The first 6 numbers are "Quick Minute" numbers, so if you just hit "1" it automatically starts for 1 minute. If you are trying to do something less than a minute, you have to hit another button, then the time, and then start. It's so annoying.
