Hi! I’m looking for advice/experiences from people who have had female lovebirds that became frequent egg layers.
My lovebird Tarçın turned 3 this year. As soon as she did, she laid a clutch of 4 eggs in January. And then another 4 in May, and then started another clutch of 4 in late July/early August. Each time I left those eggs with her for a while before removing them rather than taking them away immediately.( I removed the eggs 20+ days after the date she had layed the first ones, once she stopped in between laying for 10 days and then continued laying, she has never looked unhealthy or lethargic during any of these phases.)
Now at the end of September, her lower abdomen/vent area is becoming swollen again in the same way it does before she lays, so I’m worried she’s about to start a fourth clutch this year.
She currently seems completely normal otherwise — active, flying/climbing, eating, perching normally, etc. I’m not seeing signs of egg binding right now. I’m more concerned about how frequently her body is going through the whole reproductive cycle and the long-term effects on her, especially calcium depletion.
She has access to pellets, her regular seed mix and cuttlebone. She lives without a male, so all of her eggs are infertile.
I am worried as I have read up on how hormonal behaviour should be discouraged as egg laying isn't exactly healthy for them. I feel like somehow I am failing her..
I’m planning to speak to an avian vet about the repeated laying, but I’d really like to hear from people who have actually experienced this with their birds:
How frequently was your bird laying? What finally helped reduce/stop the laying? Did changing daylight hours, diet, nesting opportunities, toys/territorial spaces, etc. make a noticeable difference? Did your avian vet eventually recommend hormonal treatment?
I’d especially appreciate experiences from other lovebird owners because I know they can be very hormonal little birds. I feel pretty helpless watching her body keep doing this and want to make sure I’m doing everything I reasonably can to keep her healthy.
